If no one shows up, you're going to lose a lot of money.

dont email bands through their generic email, like brandnew@brandnewrock.com or whatever. find who their managers are. also look to get a small venue for your first time, and make sure you can make a profit from the concert, cuz if you dont, youre fucked

Know the draw good enough so you can price tickets accordingly, plan very well in advance.

definitely plan as much as you can in advance and always be ready to think on your feet. plenty of things could go wrong the day of the show and you need to be ready to make a decision without freaking out. also, make sure to treat your bands good so that if you decide to do another show they'd be more than happy to do it again or pass the good word along.

Keep some money, and pray.

If the show goes well you'll be happy, if not you'll see who are your real friends !

But it's a real great feeling to put on a show.

And make a "sellout fashion" poster. It works.

advertise, advertise, advertise or your hard work will be for nothing. also get dedicated bands to play that won't let you down. you can't do it alone.

Hmmm, you could make some of your friends promise to come?

listen to this. you might think it's common sense, but a lot of shows i've been to, even by people who are promoters for their career, have been poorly advertised, which meant nobody showed up. it's probably the most important step.

i'd give you more advise but i don't know if you're putting on a house show or one at a club or what.

rent out a church. Its probably the cheapest room you can rent. Alot of times they even have their own sound, which saves $$.

Thats way to general to ask on a thread. State some detail, such as your budget, where it is (house/venue), Your expected draw. I can help you out if you mention those.

Pass out flyers at venues after shows with similar crowds. As kids are leaving, hand them a flyer and tell them to check it out. And be enthusiastic. Yeah.

Never pass out flyers to a DIY folkpunk show at an Anti-Flag show. No one will come and they wont understand what a flyer is.

DO NOT LET THE BANDS BRING ANYONE IN ON THE "DOOR".

Seriously bands will fuck you over and try and get all their friends in.

If you make one concession you will have to make twenty.

Know what gear you are using and have a back up everything! Back up drum kit, PA, guitar amp and bass rig. Because bands are human and humans are unreliable assholes.

Get a poster made and get it up everywhere.

pre-sale tickets if you're going to charge. that ensures that people will show up, and that you're making cash. pass out and put up fliers in high traffic locations. if you have good friends, they'll be willing to help sell tickets and put up posters for free usually.

Fuck that. If someone can't pay or doesn't want to pay, don't charge them. Better yet, don't charge anyone.

why not? i recently organized a show and booked the format and their manager was one of the nicest guys ive ever met. but i guess its luck of the draw. oh, and like everyone else has said, advertise the crap out of the thing, nothing is more dissapointing than working so damn hard on something like this only to have less people show up than you thought.
