The Coma by Alex Garland (the guy who wrote The Beach, which ended up being a DiCaprio movie),
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Attwood (futuristic but not lame, kinda scary indictment on modern life),
Jarhead by Anthony Swoffard (gets you really thinking about human kind).
oh, and anything by Chuck Palahnuik, cos he's dirty, evil and hilarious.

The Wasp Factory - Iain M. Banks (Fascinatingly weird.)
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - Jonathan Safran Foer (Incredibly imaginative and linguistically brilliant.)
Rock Me Amadeus... - Seb Clarke (One man decides to ditch indie music and immerse himself completely into the classical music world, travelling round Europe and such. Pretty funny stuff.)
Panic - Jeff Abbott (Sleek thriller, combining family tragedy and international intrigue. I polished it off in just over a day, pretty hard to put down.)

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin is the best book i have ever read. Its the first in a series of 7 books. its a fantasy book and it blows Harry Potter and A series of Misfortunate Events out of the water. Im on the 3rd book right now and i can honestly say it gets better along with the series. read reviews at amazon.com.

trust me, it will blow you away. I must warn you though, its way more mature thatn potter. its got sex, cussing, incest, rape, you name it. Its like realistic and there are shocks at every corner. they are rather long, but you will blow through them quickly cuz they wont let you put the book down. try it out. and btw your avatar is the funniest thing ive ever seen.
does "one flew over the cuccos nest" count as a classic?

does "one flew over the cuccos nest" count as a classic?
Great book, great movie.
Nothing's Sacred by Lewis Black is hysterical, especially if you haven't seen his comedy act in recent years.
Also, Sex, Drugs, & Cocoa Puffs by Chuck Klosterman is really interesting, plus he's pretty funny too.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - Jonathan Safran Foer (Incredibly imaginative and linguistically brilliant.)
such an awesome read. it is just so beautiful, funny, and touching. absolutely lovely.
The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things by J.T. Leroy
disturbing, compelling, a page turner for sure.
want more bizarre-ness? end of alice (a.m. homes) is mind blowing. there is so much stomach turning weirdness. i wanted to put it down but i wanted to really finish the damn thing.
come on, classics are cool. i just read east of eden (steinbeck) after tons of friends recommended it. such a massive book, but it is such a great story. he does a great job of developing the characters and intertwining their stories. it is pretty sweet. try it.
want a more contemporary massive read? youth in revolt (c.d. payne) is a delicious summer read. it is so much fun in all its laugh out loud goodness. funny stuff.
happy reading.

If you're talking about The Good Earth, a book about a farmer in china in the 1700 or something, then that effing blows. Ugh.
If you're into politics or that sort of thing, check out Sleeping with The Devil by Robert Baer.
Other than that, all of Dave Eggers stuff is well worth reading, espeically What is the What.
