Hey all. I need your help. I'm doing my dissertation on the
punk rock genre - aspects such as what it is to be a punk, why people want to be a punk, what connection punk today has with its origins, punk now compared with punk in the 70's and 80's etc. I'm just making initial enquiries to see if anyone wants to contribute, put foward their opinion, answer a few questions etc. any help would be greatley appreciated. thankx.

Im not a leather jacket, Combat boot wearing punk.. but I love the music, and to some degree I would probably be seen as punk. (even though I wouldnt call myself that.) Ask away..

i don't like to call myself punk because of the misrepresentation that avril, gc, and those other pop-punk, mtv whores give out to the public. (before anyone says anything, i have nothing against most pop-punk bands, just their fair-weather teeny-bopper fans)

to me, punk is doing your own thing and not caring about what other people think. it's standing up against the masses, standing up for what you believe in, even if you're all alone in the fight. it's being different, revolutionary. it's not giving in.
punk is also about community. it's about sharing a common bond with other people that you can't find anywhere else. punk rock doesn't have to sound great, it just has to mean something. it's knowing that you're not alone in the way you feel. it's becoming lost in the music. the greatest feeling in the world, for me, is to be a at concert or show, singing along with the band and the crowd that's pressed around me. it's at those moments when i am truly happy.

Amen to that brother. Ive only been involved in the local punk scene for about a year now, but in that time, Ive learned alot. Let me clarify something first. When I got into punk, it was because of bands like Rancid, TBS, the Vandals, and other real punk bands. Not because of Good Charlotte. Anyway, it seems to me that as time has gone on, punk has become more of a personal message than a political one, and thats OK by me. Standing up for what you believe in, no matter how relevant it is to the political scene, or to the personal scene, is what punks about. Sometimes your standing against the crowd, sometimes your with the majority. As long as you stand up for what you believe in, youre a true punk. Long live Rock n Roll

who cares...punk is dead...no one here is punk...no one here is revolutionary..no one here makes a difference, they spend their time whining on a message board, myself included...its a good thing no one here likes to call themselves punk because they would be a grave misrepresentation...punk was about a scene that was united in their hatred for authority and their desire for change...that is absent today...this message board is a microcosm of why...everyone bickering over what is good and what is not...blah blah blah..its all about what and who you know

get over it
