It wasn't supposed to be original. It was a wonderfully acted and directed adult fairy tale/period piece. There was very little wrong with the film.

Yeah except for the entire facism and Spanish resistance allegory that you clearly missed.

what about this film was original?

del Toro actually had the balls to kill off a nine-year old girl, our herione nonetheless, at the very end. No one else would try to do that. To me, that's pretty damn original.

What I took from it was that that was left to the viewer's imagination.

Anyway, the film is great, very visual and appealing to the eyes, and so forth, but I felt it was lacking something. And it's very [emotionally] draining and tough to watch; you won't feel "good" when it's over.

i disagree. i felt good after it was over.

the bad guy got what he deserved and the little girl got to go be where she wanted to be. i liked the ending a lot.

i saw it as she had to come to an end in this world so she could go to the world she belonged in. she died to the people trying to help her, but in reality she was reunited with her family to live the life she wanted.

great great film. people saying it is overrated just sound like snobs to me. If anything, this movie didn't get enough credit. My friends and I seem to be the only people around here who saw it and who are pushing it around

I enjoy pretty much everything about this film. Its is hard to watch or stomach as times but I think those parts were essential. I couldn't imagine a different/better ending. As soon as I have the cash I'm buying it.

Why am I a snob for thinking that the movie did not live up to the hype? I have no problem with someone liking it or even loving it, but I did not leave the theater with the same feeling as those who are fans. I think that it is more snobbish to act like those who didn't like it so much are half-retarded.

I didn't enjoy it at all. I thought it was wonderfully acted and visually impressive, but everything else bored me. I didn't find it nearly as original as others did and it did not live up to the hype.

Also, as some other people have said, I didn't feel "good" when I left the theater. It just felt like it was missing something.

its a fantastic movie. for me it was far from incomplete. the more i think about it the more connections i find and the more themes i realize. there is so so many things behind whats going on, i wish more of you could experience it like i did.

apparently my wife and I are the only one who thought it was fairly clear that she died at the end. She is easily able to slip out of the harsh reality she lived without being oblivious to what is going on around her, she demonstrates this many times. Moments before her death she slips back into her fairytale world, but when the camera comes back to her she's dead (i.e. fairytale over, obviously there are no more fantastical shots). I really had thought it was just the religious folk that went with the happy ending interpretation. Guess I was wrong.

The story isn't incomplete when you apply it to the Spanish resistance and fascism metaphor, which is the entire point of the movie.

You're not supposed to feel good; they're fascists.
