View Full Version : Most INFLUENCIAL New Jersey/Long Island Band Round 2
I've taken the top 4 from the last poll and added 3 more.
Remember this is most influential, not which band you like the most.
The last round will be the top 2 from this one so make yourself heard, the playing field is going to get really narrow after this :-)

i was torn between lifetime and misfits. i went for lifetime in the end. i think lifetime have influenced more bands, especially great bands like nfg, fob, std and other bands with 3 initials. the misfits' legacy has been mainly the goth-style which i'm not a huge fan of. although they have influenced some great bands like nofx and offspring.

Its Brand New. They made Deja which is influential because its the best album since Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club. I mean, its like the most important album of the last ten years, maybe even of all time. Without Deja there wouldn't be any model to judge every other album ever created off of. Plus, Jesse Lacey is like the hottest thing since the inside of a Hot Pocket. How is he not influential? No one has ever even heard of Lifetime. They don't influence shit.

Anybody who voted for STD should have voted for Lifetime. Anybody who voted Thursday and Brand New might as well have voted for Glassjaw. BECAUSE... Lifetime and Glassjaw influenced them. Misfits were damn influential, but I think their influence has worn off. Psychobilly and Horror Punk are cool subcultures in the punk realm, but those bands are not as major as the bands that have stemmed from Lifetime and Glassjaw. That being said, I went with Lifetime.

Brand New hasn't influenced any body except the newer bands that are coming out.. Although they are certainly one of my favorite bands, they are not truly influential.. The same can be said about TBS.. Glassjaw and the Movielife are the most influential to come out of LI.. The Misfits will always be legendary.. I can't say much about Lifetime because I've never listened to them.. But I went with glassjaw anyway

I do agree with you, in my opinnion Brand New isn't that influential at the moment. However, with that being said, you also have to consider how they (or even if they) will influence bands in the future. Its interesting to think about...
But I'm not supporting Brand New, I love them, but I just don't think they are groundbreaking on the level that Lifetime and Glassjaw were and still are.
I went with Lifetime, but Misfits are up there too (for the whole horror punk movement). As well as Glassjaw. It's a tough choice.

Agreed. Fuck anyone who thinks otherwise. I can't count all the people I see with their merchandise on at the mall. (Even though I generally have a dislike for the "Spook Troopers".) I mean, even their logo is recognizable by people who hate the genre. The same MAY only be said about Thursday's dove. Anyhow, they didn't just influence the psychobilly/horror punk thing, they were one of the first major American punk bands who weren't shitty art punk. So many metalheads and punks alike love and were influenced by the Misfits, and people still dig them to this day, and I doubt that people will stop digging them for a while.
How can you argue with, "I got somethin' to say/I killed a baby today/And it doesn't matter that much to me as long as its dead"?

This thread is for the most influential musically, thats why I made it clear in the first post that it's not who you like the most. But with how well brand new is doing either people don't read the first post or they think Brand New will be influential sometime in the future I guess...

not knocking on you, but there is no way that Brand New should be winning.. THEY ARE A GREAT BAND, but this is not a popularity contest
Here's how I feel:
Glassjaw is the most influential AT THIS CURRENT POINT because they revolutionized post-hardcore/screamo/punk and set the template for whatever came out for the next five-ten years. They did it better than anyone else, and will probably do it again whenever the new album comes out. But in terms of biggest impact, they shouldn't be the choice because their music did not reach nearly as many people, within the scene or otherwise. For this poll, I voted Glassjaw.
However, knocking other bands like Brand New and Taking Back Sunday is ludicrous, because both have changed the game in numerous ways. I would venture to guess at least hundreds of bands, maybe even more, have tried to recreate Tell All Your Friends, with the fast majority failing miserably. TAYF is a landmark album, as it essentially "broke" screamo/post-hardcore, and became the album that every up coming punk band wanted to make, but couldn't. Even though they aren't as talented musically as GJ, you cannot deny the impact of TBS on the scene... even with lesser albums now, they are still extremely influential and relevant.
As for Brand New, while they may not have influenced new bands to copy their sound (yet - give it a few years), their influence on today's scene is totally undeniable. When Deja Entendu came out, every band within the scene that had artistic integrity wanted to top it, and I haven't heard any that have yet - but many tried. Then, with the Devil and God are Raging Inside Me coming out this year, every band even loosely connected with the scene or punk/emo music recognizes it's importance. Each time the records came out, they changed the entire genre of music, and set an almost impossible standard for other bands to reach, as well as giving bands within the scene something totally different to aspire to. Simply put, they revolutionized the scene twice. And I have no doubt the fourth album will blow people's minds, and be beyond whatever constraints "emo" put upon the band.
Finally, while I give credit to those punk bands like Lifetime or Saves the Day, they aren't the most influential just because they were the first bands to play a certain style of music. There is a big difference between being successful or playing it for the first time and bringing it to the masses or the scene and making a huge impact. There might not have been certain bands without Lifetime or STD, but there also wouldn't be nearly the impact of the scene without bands like Glassjaw, TBS and Brand New.

Dude, you obviously didn't get my point if you think I am knocking Brand New... This poll was about INFLUENCE MUSICALLY.. Can you name 10 bands that Brand New or Taking Back Sunday has influenced and is worth listening too? I really can't.. On the other hand Glassjaw, has been around for a longer time and influenced a whole genre and bands to take their sound and try something else.. IF you're voting for Brand New you should have just voted for the Movielife since they were a big part of influencing Brand New.. Again, no one is saying that Brand New isn't influential, but they need more time to be considered along the same lines as glassjaw or the Movielife.. Brand New and Taking Back Sunday set the tone for what you call the "emo" product and it will never be surpassed.. But this is about which band influenced the most bands/genre musically and that would be glassjaw.. Without glassjaw there wouldn't be bands like Thrice, the Used, the Blood Brothers. The list can go on...

I think we're pretty much on the same page here man. I don't really disagree with any of your points and in fact I did vote for Glassjaw, because at this point they are the most influencial... I completely agree they are the choice. I didn't mean to insinuate you (specifically) were knocking Brand New, there were other people slamming BN and TBS and saying they had no influence on the scene at all.
10 Bands that are "worth listening to" influenced by TBS wouldn't be as easy, but there are hundreds out there that were/are trying to put out that record. So I think they should be in the conversation.
My point about Brand New is that they have already influenced current bands already on the scene, and in the next wave of new bands they will probably influence hundreds more. Which I think we agree on.
I also agree about your point about GJ influencing a better quality (as well as quantity) of bands, probably because they are musically much more talented and more advanced than the other bands on the list, and also were doing it before any band even had a clue, and they still wrote better songs than any band on the scene. EYEWTKAS is one of my favorite records of all time, a true classic.

I wasn't sure if we were on the same page or not, but we are.. It's just that people/fans are voting as this was a popularity contest, when in reality it's about who has been more influential in the certain style.. I think a lot of the reasons why glassjaw/the movielife aren't doing what they do anymore is because they were so influential that the scene has become way to watered down.. Every band sounds exactly like the previous.. Interestingly enough, Alt Press's article on Botch, mention something to the affect that bands have actually taken what thye have played and made it their own..
I would say that in the years to come, Brand New with definitely be a force to be reckoned with, if they continue to put out great albums.. Taking Back Sunday for me has pretty much gone downhill since John and Shaun left, but that is just my opinion...
I love Brand New and they are perhaps my favorite band to listen to right now, but any "true" fan would know that they still have a little more time ahead of them to be considered really influential.. Out of any band that is still affiliated with the LI/Jersey scene, I would say that Brand New, because of the fact that glassjaw, the movielife aren't around, would be the next influential band for the newcomers to mock..
Glassjaw still reigns supreme regardless of what this poll says..

Only possible answers are:
Lifetime (For the very style the Movielife and Saves the Day played for ages.)
The Misfits (For the whole "dark punk"/hardcore scheme)
Thursday (Pop-Screamo)
Glassjaw isn't that influential, nothing Deftones hadn't set the stage for, they just ran parallel to Thursday, except Thursday plays a little poppier. They didn't really become influential until Worship, everything else was old news. Saves the Day is even less, the Movielife is barely influential, and Brand New's influence is pretty much one album, where a bunch of schumucks tried to throw acoustic tracks into their records to be groundbreaking. Each band is awesome, but really, only those three are valid, imo.

Well, I would disagree with you for the simple fact that the Misfits really only influenced goth/horror punk.. I cant say anything about Lifetime because i am not a fan.. As for Thursday, glassjaw is the far superior band..
As for comparing them to the Deftones, sure.. But even then what glassjaw has done for the "scene" is much more widely seen than any of these bands on here..
As for Brand New, you must not listen very hard because each of their albums has surpassed what the did previously..

I has to be the Misfits. Their cheesy brand of light punk dittys about monsters and shit paved the way for thousands of no talent hacks to crap out inferior songs and coast along on image alone.
When 80's hardcore came along with something legitimate to say, these guys put a stop by putting style over substance and catering to the lowest common denominator. For better or for worse (in this case worse) the Misfits are for sure the most influential.

Lifetime. They've influced so many. I couldn't really say anything about Glassjaw (who's currently winning) because I haven't really listened to them.
