i just recently had my computer fried by a lightning storm, but good news, homeowners insurance bought me a new one.
i went ahead and got one that will play any new pc games, but i've been out of pc gaming for years. whats a few good games from the last couple years i should check out?

FPS-wise... F.E.A.R. and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. were sweet.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

That game, and the expansions, have been the sole reason my 2000$ gaming computer wasn't a waste of money. With graphics mods, its the best looking thing you can get. The game fucking owns; perfect blend of RPG and action.

Starcraft II, when that's out.

Honestly, I'm at the same loss as you. Doom 3 and half-life 2 kind of suck, battlefront II got boring-- I'm sick of FPS games-- I don't want to get windows vista for halo 2. Oh, if you have vista, get halo 2 in June.

I can't find many games that seem all that worth it.

i just tried f.e.a.r. and i must have spent too long playing console shooters, i was a little overwhelmed with mapping all actions to keyboard keys. i might need to go with something a little more laid back.
i know oblivion is probably a beast to run, im not sure if my computer can handle it. i have a gig of ram, a 256mb nvidia geforce video card, an intel core 2 duo processor...im not a computer guy, i dont know, will that handle it?

Half Life 2 if you havent played. Prob one of the best games ever made. You can wait till later this year though when Half Life 2: Orange Box comes out which includes Half Life 2, Half Life 2: Episode 1, 2, Team Fortress 2, and Portal.

What video card?

You can definitely run it. Just a matter of if you'd be satisfied with the graphic quality you can run it at.

If you can do without the bells and whistles, it'd be fine.

If your a fan of turn based, Warcraft 3 is fun. Also Half-Life 2 since it not only comes with the game, but Source.
