whoa. never in a million years did i think i'd find a hawk fan on this forum.
MY FAVORITE BAND EVER. in my opinion, best pop punk in the market. believe it or not, i like every single one of their songs.
and as far as news: they're tracking a new record in september.
hawk nelson > relient k, always.

Hawk Nelson aren't too shabby
You're not punk
The end.
I've realized something about this band:
If you like them, you like them when you're in the 12-15 year old range. After that, you grow out of them.
Their lyrics are some of the worst.
"You'll never, ever, pull my lever. Not today and not forever."

only in your dreams. having seen them both on the same day (festival, had to see hawk because of a friend) matt thiessen has more talent in one pinky than hawk nelson's four members combined.

I agree wholeheartedly.
The song "I So Hate Consequences" or "Devastation And Reform" or "In Like A Lion (Always Winter)" are singularly better than Hawk Nelson's entire catalog.

I had the displeasure of seeing them open for MxPx.
i like a few hark nelson songs, im not gonna lie. but MxPx is a few thousand times better and i get to see them in 9 days! im so stoked.

relient k is wanna be punk. they have nice lyrics, but in the end, their music doesn't add up. some of the worst pop punk i've ever heard. and everyone knows hawk nelson is one of the catchiest bands out there, even if their lyrics are a little lame. just read the review by drew beringer on this site for one of their albums.
also, this is all coming from a hardcore fan. if you think your tastes are 'too mature' for some fun teeny pop punk, your tastes are immature.

and not just in the songwriting. that guy can play like 12 instruments.
and @ the guy who said it was the worst pop punk,
how can you seriously say that after hearing "be my escape"?
that song i will say straight up has the best chord progressions, vocal melodies, and piano parts of any pop punk song out there, and i take pride in my own music but none of my energetic songs are THAT good. one or two come close but i dont think i can match up to relient k's abilitiy.

people that have been to the tooth & nail tour or are going - does anyone know what the deal is with yuri? i heard that he wasn't at the jersey show last night...i'm hoping that he'll be here for the ny show tomorrow...
His wife birthed recently, so he's sitting this tour out.

if we're still discussing hawk nelson, i actually preferred their pre-tooth&nail days. the first album had some okay songs it..the second, i guess they figured they had to do away with the whole teenage angst scene, but at least they wore sort-of original (for tooth and nail/christian music listeners atleast), but now they're just yet another falling up.

pfthhhhhhhhh LOL. be my escape? alright, i have to admit, the lyrics are very nice, but best chord progressions? nope. definitely not. it's so CLICHE. vocal melodies? matt thiessen has a nice voice for pop, but for pop punk, his voice just doesn't fit. it seems out of place in most of their songs.

good god, i saw them wednesday on the T&N tour and the singer is sporting a mohawk about 4 inches high, dyed black, with the other hair shaved down and dyed white. he had black dickies with a white shirt and a thin black tie. i wanted to remind him that he once collaborated with drake bell.
they were pretty entertaining but their set annoyed me. out of their 8 songs, 2 were covers and the stopped in teh middle of a song to have some obese girl come onstage and play kazoo.

hahahaha really? because i mean i play tons of songs and i dont know too many with that chord progression. i can pick out chord progressions that are a lot more cliche. and vocal melodies has nothing to do with hwo the voice sounds its the notes he sings.

maybe your not a very mature music listener yet. otherwise, you don't listen to pop punk or something. but the chord progression is also VERY cliche. everyone knows that. the end.
and yeah, sorry, i was talking about his voice, not vocal melodies. the vocal melodies are actually quite good. they just need a new lead singer.

pop punk = wannabe punk. let's be honest about that. musically, every album is solid in its sound.
hawk nelson is catchy, but you cant deny the fact that relient k's first three albums (pre-mmhmm) is just as if not more catchy.
also, im a huge hardcore fan, and i too, own every relient k and hawk nelson album (the latter because my mom got them for me in a tooth and nail super sale 'cause she knows i like a lot of their artists).

relient k's first three albums are not as catchy as hawk nelson. you just can't beat songs like something on your mind, bring em out, letters to the president, EVERY LITTLE THING and HELLO.

every little thing is their catchiest... but must have done something right has the catchiest chorus i've ever heard, sadie hawkins dance, pink tux, and i so hate consquences are equally as catchy in my mind.
MxPx is the most fun I've had at a show, so I don't know...

Well RK is a much better band than HN, so it's ok.
I mean, Smile, It's The End Of The World is a steaming pile of crap for the most part. The only song worth listening to is "Head On Collision".
Whereas MMHMM was a pop-punk/pop-rock masterpiece, and Five Scores And Seven Years Ago was just a step down from that.

I believe that moment for me was the first time I heard "Walls" by Emery.
Pretty much agree, 'cept MMHMM and 5S7YA tie for me in second before 2 Lefts, 3 Do.
I was mad I missed them with Mae and Sherwood, but I got to see Underoath, Norma Jean, and Maylene two days in a row, so I didn't really care too much... though, MxPx (with Hawk Nelson, lol), Sullivan, and The Fold would've been awesome as well... but yeah.

I look at Tooth and Nail and include Solid State in this, but Tooth and Nail have so many bands I love... Emery, Anberlin, Jonezetta (represent), As Cities Burn, The Chariot, Underoath, Waking Ashland (tooth and nail release), Mae (both releases on TnN), Haste The Day, He Is Legend, Norma Jean, Sullivan, The Fold, and The Classic Crime.
I look at Militia Group and see Copeland, Cartel, The Panic Division, Lakes, and The Rocket Summer and they just don't compare for me yet.

You make an excellent point.
I'm not a die hard fan of any record label, as they all seem to have some crap.
Copeland is one of my top all time favorite bands, so that may be what is drawing me towards TMG.

no, lttp WAS cliche, just very well done. the only thing good about rk is their lyrics and their screams (theissen has an incredible scream). but DEFINITELY listen to smile, it's the end of the world. it's THE BEST pop punk album to date. something to rock out to the whole way, cept for the last song, fourteen which is boring.
and someone else before has lame, but fun lyrics. if you bash them, you're immature.

Haha. "Love Is A Fast Song" got me into Copeland, but, once I heard Paula live... I was sold.
Say It Like You Mean It is in third for me... haha.

Yup... we do.
Back to topic, Hawk Nelson had the worst faux-pit I've ever seen. It was... disgusting. For lack of a better word. Worst band on Tooth and Nail, hands down.
Hmmm...I don't know about worst...but definitely in the bottom of the barrel.

I can't stand Project 86, Starflyer 59, and The Brothers Martin.
But I guess talent-wise, HN is definitely the worse.

Far-Less did not deserve that. (My dissenting opinion, you have the right to yours.)
I hate Letters To The President. I don't find it catchy cause I'm too busy finding it annoying. Smile, It's The End of the World was an improvement, even if it was inconsistent. Neither is better than The Anatomy Of Tongue In Cheek. Two Lefts...is also a masterpiece. MmHmm is good, but I haven't caught on with the new one yet.
relient k's first three albums are not as catchy as hawk nelson. you just can't beat songs like something on your mind, bring em out, letters to the president, EVERY LITTLE THING and HELLO.
While those songs may be catchy, they are all such annoyingly stupid songs that I hate them anyway. Relient K were just as catchy with "Sadie Hawkins Dance," "Pressing On," "I'm Lion-O," "College Kids," "Falling Out," "Mood Rings," "In Love With The 80s," and many more. Just my opinion.

maybe your not a very mature music listener yet. otherwise, you don't listen to pop punk or something. but the chord progression is also VERY cliche. everyone knows that. the end.
and yeah, sorry, i was talking about his voice, not vocal melodies. the vocal melodies are actually quite good. they just need a new lead singer.
well i think the fact that i usually listen to a lot more mellow stuff than pop punk makes my music tastes pretty mature. and i mean i dont know very many songs with the chord progression in the verse. A, B, D, F#, E, B, C#, D--it may sound simple, and it may not be like the newest most unique unused chord progression either, but you cant do that these days without your song not making sense. but i stand by my point in that its not near as generic as most pop punk bands' 4-chords method.

nope, i don't think you guys'll realize how catchy hawk is though, cause of their annoyance factor towards you. but nope, those relient k songs don't come close to being as catchy.
but i do agree on hawk being musically the least mature on tooth and nail. but hey, it's pop punk, and meeting the status quo is all you need to sound great. they are mature for pop punk though.
i started out hating them, but liking one song (i think it was head on collision too). then the rest gradually fell in place. give em a second chance, or, a second listen. they're not hard to love.
ACTUALLY thousand foot krutch might be musically worse than hawk nelson. one of the worst bands on the label, along with project 86, ruth, and spoken.

When I saw them on the Smile tour, I think everyone in the crowd felt pretty let down when they played a shorter set than opener Falling Up, then proceeded not to come out for an encore despite a 10 minute chant for one. And they didn't even play Head On Collision, which is one of their best, if not their best song.
And since I mentioned Falling Up, I'll just say that I got Hawk's Letters and Falling Up's Crashings around the same time, and while I adore a few songs on that Hawk album, Crashings has always struck me as catchier. Plus, unlike HN, Falling Up doesn't use every cliche imaginable in their lyrics or music.

TFK is gold. phenomenon is one of my favorite "party" albums. good times listenin' to that album. spoken's duet with cory from norma jean automatically make them "decent", and from what ive heard from ruth, they're def. better than HN. project 86 is def. better, seein' both live on the same day. Anatomy > Two Lefts > MmHmm > 5 Score > S/T
And, as was previously said, the s/t still rocks.
S,ITEOTW > Letters To The President.
A pretty good CD over a really not very good at all CD.
Dawn Escapes > Crashings > Exit Lights
Exit Lights just should not have happened. That stuff was pretty bland. And I think Crashings had a little more immaturity in songs like "Falling In Love."
Everyone else > Thousand Foot Krutch
The only artist I think is bad on the Tooth and Nail labels. I think some others just have not capitalized on their potential.

hawk nelson=christian simple plan
Simple Plan never wrote a song as good as "The One Thing I Have Left." Hawk Nelson has more rock sensibility. And considering they're like a pop-punk (sometimes just pop), that's saying something. Simple Plan is annoying just because of who they are and what they write about. Hawk Nelson is annoying when they're stupid or cliche, but can be endearing at times.
I'm not sure I'd completely disagree with the weakest comment, though I think HN's next release has potential to bring them out of that category, whereas I think TFK is just that kind of band.

you're very right. hawk nelson in NO WAY sounds like simple plan. whoever says that is just jumping on a bandwagon of lies and has obviously not listened to the band. someone made that up, just to get them either popular, or unpopular.
hawk nelson has never really been cliche, although some lyrics are a bit lame.

i just saw hawk on the T&N tour and they attract the same exact fanbase as simple plan, and have the same mall punk persona. yes i enjoy them (have both cds) but i know what their shortcomings are, come on some of their lyrics are just plain juvenile. HN and SP are both canadian pop-punk bands that play safe, catchy music with plenty of pogo riffs, so yeah, they are rather similar.
cliche? their singer all of a sudden has a mohawk, they wrote a song about "packing up and moving to california" and HN trucker hats were selling like hotcakes at the aforementioned showi was just at.

Nice! I agree, Matt is very talented.
I saw Hawk Nelson a few months ago, and they were nothing special. They had us wave cell phones in the air to the song "Zero". My arm was dead after that.
I went through a phase where I was absolutely in love with their music, so all my top tracks on itunes are Hawk Nelson songs. I'm trying to get rid of them. Maybe I should just put Define The Great Line on repeat or something.
