on the contrary, i actually thoroughly enjoy conor's more simple literal writing style, but i've always been criticized for that, so i'm not exactly surprised others tend to feel quite the opposite.

and musically, whatever it is that he does with that random Ab in the bass really gets me, i don't know what it is.

Yeah, Fevers and Mirrors is sensational.

And about Cassadaga, me and a fellow colleague were discussing how even though it was a very different sound, it was good to see a more mature sound coming from Conor. I get so so sick of people complaining when he changes his style. I honestly don't feel in any place to complain about him...so what if he changes. With his track record, he's practically capable of anything.

Yeah it isn't incredible but I was simply glad it wasn't another Digital Ash since that's the only Bright Eyes release I don't enjoy in any capacity. So what's your favorite Bright Eyes album?

EmilyRegina
06/21/07, 07:29 PM
Four Winds the song is a good folk piece from Conor. Yeah, some of the more rock infused songs on lifted and wide awake are more exciting/stimulating/alluring/addicting/.... but for his folk edge, this is a good direction.

Personally, I though the Four Winds EP was better as a collection, albeit small, than Cassadega. And if you add in Endless Entertainment (free download from the website a bit ago, nto sure is its still up)... you have a great group of new songs. There were a few weak ones on cassadega, but all in all his new work is as amazing as ever.

Have you guys heard about his Hollywood bowl show with the L.A. philharmonic? This is interesting. From punk with the desaperacidos to a backing symphony. I'm so curious to see how its going to sound/look/be.

I'll be there, of course. Even at 40/ticket he's so worth it live.

I'm never sure. Cassadaga sure as hell isn't it, though.

Just bought A Collection of Songs... the other day and seeing how much he has grown in songwriting (recording as Bright Eyes since 15) is really amazing. Even back then he was into a lot of electronic stuff, it kind of is foreshadowing for Digital Ash In a Digital Urn amongst other stuff he has recorded.

I'd have to agree although a lot of people adore that album, even going so far as saying it's their favorite Bright Eyes record. The songwriting is still solid but musically, it isn't all that appealing to me. Then again, I dislike most of the electronic music that I've come across.

I disliked it at first but it gets slightly better with every listen and would probably rank somewhere within my top 5 if I had to compile a list.

It's got a decent shot at cutting mine. The National, Iron & Wine, and The Cinematic Orchestra are pretty certain to be on the list at this point. Then there's Cassadaga and hopefully the new Radiohead album rounding out the top 5. Although it always feels like I'm forgetting something when I compile these lists.

the shitty thing with bright eyes is that one album, (which you might have heard at some point, and then said, 'wow, this blows cock.') could be totally different from the next one (which you may really enjoy). alot of people hear a few songs from one album, and then never listen to him again, because (let's face it) some of his songs do suck. it's all too easy to get the wrong impression.
maybe it's just me, but i feel like to really get a good idea of conor oberst you'd have to listen to some of his older stuff.

'fevers and mirrors', as well as 'lifted' are his most cohesive albums. concept albums, in a way. if you're going to listen to them, listen to them in their entirety, with your full attention, or not at all. you won't be dissapointed. unless you like korn.
but his eps and bsides are really where it's at.

'noise floor'
'there is no beginning to the story'
'every day and every night'
'o holy fools split' (don't be frightened of turning the page)

and then listen to letting off the happiness. let it sink in for a few days.

'i'm wide awake' and 'digital ash' are pretty amazing, music-wise. not his best lyrics though.

if you feel like having a laugh, listen to 'a collection of songs'. if you feel like being dissapointed, listen to 'cassadaga'.

best songs:

amy in the white coat
at the bottom of everything
an attempt to tip the scales
bad blood
black comedy
blue angels air show
the calender hung itself
the city has sex
drunk kid catholic
easy lucky free
entry way song
falling out of love at this volume
first day of my life
going for the gold
gold mine gutted
haligh, haligh, a lie, haligh
happy bithday to me
hit the switch
hungry for a holiday
i will be grateful for this day, i will be grateful for each day to come
if winter ends
lila
a line allows progress, a circle does not
loose leaves
lua
neely o' hara
no lies, just love
oh, you are the roots that sleep beneath my feet and hold the earth in place
old soul song
padraic my prince
a perfect sonnet
poison oak
road to joy
spent on rainy days
sunrise, sunset
we are free men

I don't agree with this at all. There's a common thread that permeates every Bright Eyes album, rendering them familiar and therefore somewhat accessible to those already acquainted (even in the most cursory capacity) with Oberst. While there are fairly obvious differences between albums, they aren't so drastic that the new direction is alienating.

His older material is decent but hardly indicative of Bright Eyes' sound. Songs such as Make War, Laura Laurent, and Let's Not Shit Ourselves hinted at where Conor was steering the band and I'm Wide Awake is probably the pinnacle of Oberst's work as well as what should be his niche.

As for cohesion, I'd say the lack thereof is what Lifted suffers from most. It's all over the place and while every song is quite good, it certainly doesn't carry one prevailing sonic theme. I'm Wide Awake is easily the most cohesive Bright Eyes album to date and at this point, I'd say it's their best.

Craig Kilborn...great performance. I think that's when Conor dedicated it to Arnold Schwartzenwhatever for his big muscley arms and George W. for his incompetence...Something along those lines but a great performance none the less. That's always been Connor's problem, each album, with the exception of I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, just lacks overall semblance and ends up as an inconsistent but mostly good collection of songs.

Cassadaga, Lifted, and Letting Off The Happiness are the Bright Eyes releases that aren't "albums". Fevers And Mirrors is rather cohesive, it's just really puerile.

There's a reason I'm Wide Awake is far and away this band's best work.

Aww <3 Just been working like crazy. Busybusybusy but I miss ya too! I see the BoSox doing well, made me think of ya! Everything well?

As for some people saying Lifted isnt a complete album....I dunno. I love that record beginning to end. I love how diverse sounding it is yet totally cohesive (imo).

Digital Ash really is a complete and total failure for Conor Oberst. There are a few decent songs on the record but even those are ruined by experimentation for the sake of experimentation.

I'm Wide Awake > Lifted > Fevers > Four Winds EP > Letting off the Happiness > Cassadaga > Digital Ash

While Fevers is my favorite sounding record simply because of it's angst, Wide Awake is really his only consistent record (Unless Digital Ash being consistently bad counts). Cassadaga was pretty much a complete miss too. He left the best songs off the record for the most part and put them on the Four Winds EP.

Vinh, you really could never get into Okkervil River? Not even Black Sheep Boy? I would think they would be right up your alley.

I quite enjoy electronic music as well, which is why I can discern shoddy attempts at the genre.

I really enjoy Digital Ash. So to each his own. But Cassadaga was not a complete failure by any means in my opinion. The album starts off with such a great tune hidden after the two minutes intro, and continues with some catchy tunes. The album definitely slows down in the middle, but the last four songs save the record from being weighted in the front.

IWasaCamera
05/25/08, 11:43 AM
Cassadaga is quite good. Gets more shit than it deserves because it can't live up to I'm Wide Awake which isn't really a fair standard.

chipdip18
05/25/08, 11:45 AM
I definitely agree with you. Cassadaga is worthwhile and a good record, and shouldn't really be compared to his other work. Its a consistent folk-rock album, and i can't think of any fair comparsions to other albums.

I love Cassadaga. It's such a fun record to listen to. I was talking to someone the other day and Bright Eyes came up and he pronounced Cassadag as CassaDOGa. I got pissed and let him know that's not how it's pronounced and he needs to get this shit straight.
