Tom Waits is indeed a genius, and my favorite songwriter.
However, I already have about 6 or 7 other albums of his, and I was kind of wanting to get something "new" I guess...but if it is a really great record, Id get it.

Either ...is a real boy or Trainwreck. I voted Trainwreck because I think it is a more complete listen, especially if you pay attention to the story line.

you can never go wrong with tom waits.
CellarGhosts
05/24/07, 06:44 PM
that is true, haha.
Either Decomposer or ...Is A Real Boy.
Those are the only two I've heard.

you really have to post a poll to decide which cd to buy? lol.
say anything. that's what i say.
CellarGhosts
05/25/07, 04:53 PM
well its looking pretty one sided here haha.
alot of people seem to think that Say Anything are the best here, but I highly disagree that Say Anything are better than Tom Waits. In fact, I know they arent. Tom pwns them hands down.
but like Ive said, I own about 7 of his CDs already, so Im looking to expand my artist library a little bit here.
get the matches. such an awesome, creative cd. and the dude from blink and from rancid produce a couple of track on it - if that means anything.
...is a real boy is good, but i think it's a tad bit overrated, especially when comparing it to decomposer.
just my $0.02

What can I really expect from Say Anything, though? the only song I know is "Admit It!!!", and I heard "Alive With the Glory Of Love" a long time ago, but I forget what it even sounds like
as in...if you know my general tastes in music, would I like it?
I guess the thing is that so many people seem to worship, praise, hail, etc ...Is a Real Boy all the time, and I just dont wanna buy it and be disappointed.
I mean, Ill buy it, if its good, but I do get really tired of people worshiping Max Bemis all the time, sicne I know there's gotta be better songsmiths out there.

go with Punk Goes Acoustic 2

i went with tom waits, but that's probably the only waits album you don't have mate haha. but knowing your tastes, if ya want something new to check out i recon go with one of:
joe strummer & the mescaleros - global a go-go
b.b. king & eric clapton - riding with the king
ted leo & the pharmacists - the tyranny of distance
rx bandits - the resignation
CellarGhosts

goddamnit, Craig, again with the BB King/Clapton album!
haha, kidding man,
but yeah those are all good reccomendations as well.
Ill check em all out at some point in the near future haha.

haha good on ya. i don't know/enjoy anything other than waits on that list so i didn't know what else to say haha. everyone praises say anything, but it must of been too 'complex' & 'genius' for me to understand or something 'cause it didn't click with me at all haha
CellarGhosts
05/25/07, 09:00 PM
haha, really? like...how would you describe Say Anything? as in...what can I expect if I buy their record, like...how the songs-sound wise?

oh i'm probably the wrong guy to ask, a lot of people praise them as 'indie heros' that have created something 'fresh.' but to me they sound like indie/pop punk with simple & not really that enjoyable lyrics, but maybe that's the 'genius' of it all mate who knows. the vocal style is kind of annoying too. but ya know for every one person who isn't keen on them there seems to be a two dozen hardcore fans haha, might be best to find a stream or something first mate

straight up rock & roll man. not indie, pop-punk, emo, nothing like that. you may not like it at first (i didn't) but it definitely grows on you. it's worth it. get it unedited though.

Yea, I didn't like IARB at first at all. I liked maybe two songs. But now it's one of my favorite cd's period. It really grows.

I voted for Boys Night Out. Say Anything and Punk Goes Acoustic II are both very good. but Trainwreck is genious. a lot of people didn't like it cause they got away from their older sound, but the story line is incredible. the concept is incredible, and it's just awesome.

Cool, cool man. Ill get it sometime.
But today, I went out, and I actually ended up getting Sage Francis, since I couldnt find ...Is a Real Boy at either of the two stores I went to, and the Sage CD was cheaper than it was a week ago, so I went ahead and got it. really good stuff, Im glad I did...
but yeah, Ill get Say Anything sometime.
...Is A Real Boy > all those other CDs
CellarGhosts
05/26/07, 05:53 PM
I already know that's not true. Ive heard two songs off of ...Is a Real Boy, and I can tell its nowhere near as good as Closing Time, which I have heard almost all of, but dont own.
I guess Im a little hesitant about getting Say Anything, even though I plan to, since people endlessly worship them, and I just am afraid it'll let me down.

I actually did haha. it was fairly cheap, and I couldnt find the Say Anything CD in either store I went to, so yeah, I got Human the Death Dance. really pleased with it, too.

Say Anything is a good choice (and clearly a popular one too), but I think you should really look into The Matches also. They're really innovative and great writers, every song on Decomposer brings it's own vibe and flavor.
