Mark Cuban has again updated his blog (http://www.blogmaverick.com/2007/05/29/the-future-of-the-music-business-again/) discussing the music industry.
I would find a manufacturer of cash machines, the ones you see in every bar, restaurant, mini-mart and retail outlet and work with them to reconfigure the machines so that they can hold a hard drive that can be updated with new songs via wired or wireless internet access and whose screen can offer a simple interface for people to select music. The consumer plugs in their SD card from their phone, or plugs the USB cable attached to the machine into their IPod or similar device and the music selected, downloaded and debited to the customers credit or debit card. Pay the machine host a commission, or a per transaction and everyone goes home happy.

But if you were already there grabbing some snack cakes and heard the album over the speaker and liked it .. would you have it transfered to your ipod along with your tasty treat?

if you put it like that then...maybe. after a couple of bits of a tasty cake i am in a great mood i might end up downloading some Gibson for the walk home.

These are pretty much already in existance...when I was in Vegas, there was a Touchscreen Internet Jukebox that had MP3 players available for sale that you could load with the music from the jukebox (which had a VERY extensive catalog that was updated weekly). The only difference between his idea and the real was the fact that you didn't instantly get the MP3 player. The MP3 players were sent via mail.
Still, an interesting idea...just an expedition of an already good idea.

Why plug anything in at all? Give us WiFi music players, and have the songs floating in the ether.

I still buy plenty of CDs. I absolutely love going to indie stores and searching through all of it for music. And from what I see in Amoeba on a daily basis, so do many many other people too. There isn't a time I go in there that the line isn't 8 or 9 people waiting. He has some great ideas and thoughts for the future, but I think everyone is on the idea that NOONE buys cds anymore, which isn't true in my eyes and from what i see daily.

I worked for a company that did this while I was in college. It was called Mediaport. Look em up. There are also a TON of other companies doing the same thing. He's about 10 years late on the idea.

if interoperability isn't an issue and these things are everywhere and people can plug their respective mp3 players directly into the machines i see how this could work

i dont think it's too bad of an idea. it can't hurt to try it out in a few test markets.

tell me again; why does this guy get to have an opinion on the music industry?

I don't know what I'd do if they stopped making CDs, I buy a about 10 or so CDs a month, sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on what is coming out or how often I feel like new music, but I don't download songs at all, plus I enjoy going to the record store, buying a CD and then listening to it through headphones while looking through the liner notes and whoever ends up pulling the plug on CDs, I will track them down and kick them square in the junk until they cough up their left testacle

I hear there is a machine that does this in the 7-11 in Times Square, I havent had a chance to check it out but the owner of a company building these things just told me about it.
in addition to selling music it also can print photos from a digital camera memory card

I'm the same way. I can't imagine not being able to go to the store and buy a physical music album. You can't touch digital music, you know. I'd rather have full packaging that I can touch and look over and keep for future reference.
I'd much rather find a way to download snackcakes.

he has it backwards. what they need to do is reconfigure computers so they spit out cash...we already have the whole convenience thing down for music. going to the bank (or anywhere that is farther than my laptop) to have to update my ipod would be terribly inconvenient. i he was so close to a good idea, yet ended up with such an awful one.
on a side note, when i went to italy for spring break and stayed with my friend, one of her roommates was the daughter of the dude who created the atm. how would you like to be a part of that family?!?
