View Full Version : I lost all respect for Green Day (what little respect I had at least)

So, I read the Green Day article in the Punk Rock issue of Guitar World, and wow, those guys are dumbasses! They are dissing great bands like Dickies, Ramones, Sex Pistols and Johnny Rotten, Buzzcocks, and The Clash, (The most influencial punk bands ever) calling The Dickies and Johnny Rotten "Bitter old bastards". Billie Joe, also says how Dickies and Henry Rollins never wrote a single good song. I dunno, but Green Day never wrote anything better. Honestly they have to be the most disrespectful assholes in "punk rock" music. And stupid to boot! My god, Fat Mike isn't even NEARLY that disrespectful to ANY bands. At least not in public or in interviews.

Bring it on Greg, bring it on.
Here comes the bashin.............
I'm taking a ringside seat for this.
You know what is great about seth is that it doesn't matter what he has to say he will find a way to throw fat mike's name in there. I mean he could be like I went to the store and bought a banana and well banana's are fat mike's favorite food.

I knew it. They do kinda look the same from an angle.
did you read the article? they actually made some valid points..just because these points dont kiss the asses of some overrated, but certainly influential, punk bands doesn't mean they're automatically wrong.
And dont even get started on Fat Mike, he's a bitter, disrespectful, halfwit. He blames all the worlds problems on conservatives, describing the current world as being in "the worst shape its been in since Reagan"...too bad the world wasnt really in bad shape during Reagan, and what was was left over from the Carter administration.

Really...where can I find this interview, considering they went on a summerlong tour with them, you'd think they'd have somekind of mutual respect of something, unless both bands just hated each other

umm Seth, when did Billie Joe diss the ramones or clash??? he totally fuckin' praised Joe Strummer in that article. do you not know how to read? he did say Johnny Rotten is an asshole, but everyone says that. and its true. and Henry Rollins is a cunt. i thought everyone knew that.

I don't know where it is...but after the pop disaster tour mike dirnt and tre cool bashed blink...said if it weren't for green day, the tour woulda been a true disaster or something...it was kinda funny...they mostly made fun of blink's lack of talent and stuff.

I was just using Fat Mike as an example. And I thought his interview was very good. He brought up some very good points and I liked the idea that he's basicly USING bands like Good Charlotte and Sum 41 by putting them on his Rock Against Bush comp and tour so more people will get interested in getting Bush out of office. I think thats a brilliant idea. He's not using them in a disrespectful way either, he's uniting all these different bands, big and small, for a goal - to get Bush out of office.
Using Fat Mike as an example had nothing to do with Green Day or the article.

call me crazy, but will anyone really care what Sum41 has to say about GW since they're all canadian. this whole anti-bush thing seems like punk trend to me.
i give blink 182 props for performing for the troops, rather than moaning and bitchin' about the president.

blink got voted to perform, by the troops. if i were in a band, i'd be honored to be the most demanded band of the US military, i wouldn't turn it down. ever. Maybe Blink doesn't like Bush. they've never really taken a stance on it, have they?

All he did throughout the entire interview was bash on other people. He has room to call other guys bitter bastards? i hardly think so. i am still a fan of green day, hell i probably always will be... you can't unstick something that's been with you for so long. But i was greatly disappointed. I thought Billie was more laid back, less 'bitter', than that.

chris. stop. for your sake. sure, you don't have a particular taste for 70s/80s punk but that's exactly what it is... personal taste. do not degrade the old stuff just because you don't like the way it sounds. that, my friend, would be perfect grounds for me to resent you.

i own insomniac greg. one of my favorite albums of all time. yes, billie's lyrics did portray him as bitter. they did not, however, portray him as narrowminded. thus the reason i was disappointed in the fact that he so ignorantly insulted so many people. he does not have to like those people, hell, i don't even like many of those people.. but he has no right, nor any grounds, to strip them the credit of their talent.

Green Day is the very band that brought me into this 'punk' scene-thingy and I will always love their music for that. Billie Joel didn't have to be so much of an ass. At the pop-disaster tour, he did show quite a bit of his angry sad and so did some of his lyrics upon further review of them.
I think the worst thing for any band/member to do is trash other bands just because you can. Yeah, many other people have done the whole degrading bands shit but as another artist working the same field as you is just fucking stupid.

The 80's were great. You had Minor Threat, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Descendents etc.. and bands like NOFX and Bad Religion starting out. And Kurt Cobain and Nirvana is actually one of the reasons punk got big in the 90's. How can you say Nirvana killed 80's punk, that's rediculous. It doesnt even make sense.

because you start discussions with him(see post #1 in this thread), then expect him to be left out of it(see every other post you made in this thread)
[if the incredible hulk were to take the form of a rant, it would be this]
i'll begin with the question on everyone's mind. "is jonny rotten really bitter?" well, to quote jonny himself "fuck you, i'm the problem"- so we all know the answer to that question. the next question which would arise from this is; where would any of us be without this bitter, bitter man? i know i'd be listening to boring hair-metal and hippy rock, all the emo kids would be listening to the latest backstreet boys song, the punks would be listening to... god knows what, metalheads wouldn't have much concidering the sex pistols influenced the misfits who influenced countless metal bands, including the likes of metallica and white/rob zombie. now we all want to know where those little pricks from green day would be, well they'd probably still be rich businessmen on MTV, but they wouldn't be able to sell themselves under a 'punk' label without the sex pistols' music, now would they? yes, of course he was bitter, but it's his being bitter that makes him so great, would anyone give to shits about the sex pistols if he went out saying "everything's great, i'm fine, how are you? keen, lets sit down for a cup o' tea" and for that, he deserves nothing less than our up-most respect and admiration.
now where he isaid joey ramone was a bitter old bastard.... that's just blasphemy, to call the creator a bitter old bastard. (yes "the creater" because he created all of us, he created punk, the standards, the lifestyle, the attitude, the image, the music, etc) people i know have met joey ramone on many occasions, he was described as "a gentle giant" so billy joe is just pulling that out of his ass. besides, didn't they cover ramones songs at their induction to the rock and roll hall of fame? yes, the rock and roll hall of fame, a place (god willing) green day will never see again.
then he had the audacity to say the ramones, & buzzcocks were overrated, meanwhile green day's entire sound is just ripped off from those two bands, they have nothing original about them, and without the ramones and the buzzcocks, they have nothing at all.
anyone who wants to call himself a "punk" or play in a "punk-rock" band should at least respect the people that founded and shaped the genre. as if the issue of green day being a bounch of douche bags needed any more proof than already existing was necessary, i'd say it's pretty much apparent now. fuck green day, not only for what they said about their gods, not only for their music being entirely derived from other bands, being unoriginal and just plain sucking, but for the fact that they paved the way for these shit new "punk" bands on MTV who'd rather make a quick buck than show any musical inginuity, creativity, or even any signs of self respect or any form of thought beyond immediate superficial goals, such as getting rich of a trend and exploiting the music that shaped the movement of punk rock, and the lifestyle of millions of people worldwide looking for an answer beyond the one provided by society, saying to fall into line.
now as far as fat mike vs george bush is concerned, i love nofx, their music is amazing, and as far as politics are concerned i usually agree with them, but on the topic of their undenaible despising of bush, i cannot say i agree with them. i hate george bush as much as anyone, but he's saying "get bush out of office" this will not change anything, as bush is a puppet, the title "president" entitles no REAL power, as the president is simply a figurehead. if the figurehead is removed, the actions of the machine behind the figurehead will continue and remain the same. (ex.) big bush bombed iraq, clinton came around and was supposed to be super liberal, so he just cut off the supply of any external materials to iraq, including food, etc. so he starved iraq, then little bush came around and bombed iraq. so; republican or democrat, choose your poison.

I agree with you on the bush fat mike crapp. I don't have a problem with anyone. Presidents are fuck ups. Most go about the same thing just from different directions so liberal or republican wouldn't really matter when it comes down to cases like Iraq. Um...
Billie Joel is a good guitarist and Green Days music is good too. Billie has just taken fame all to his head. He's no super hot shit either. The people that paved the way for you, no matter how bad they sound today or back then shaped you and made you what you are and Billie is like Frankenstein's monster turning on Dr. Frankenstein. Because I really like Fat Mike said. Now, I'm not the biggest NoFx song, but I do really love some of their stuff, and I was shocked by his views on bands like Good Charlotte. As he put it: "Good Charlotte, their hearts are in the right place and they'll reach a million kids and then we'll make this happen. And that's punk rock." See, its not the bands in the scene who are assholes, its the kids. And Billie Joe needs to learn some respect.
Good God...everyone back the fuck off BuriedAlive. Whats the point in stirring up so much controversy over the fact that he doesnt like early punk bands? You all have bands you think suck...he has bands he thinks suck. Just because the ones he thinks suck (and they do) are influential, doesnt mean you have to trash the kid.

yea, that's a big difference though, if you say "i like music, but i hate the first cave man to ever hit two rocks together and create a rhythemic sound" you're just a douchebag, and there's no questioning it.
and absolutemest put it pretty well, except for one thing, billy joe isn't a good guitarist, i don't think there are any punk guitarists i'd look up to as "good guitarists" cept maybe hefe, and the guitarists from RKL, but for the most part, punk is attitude, not talent. even shitty generic pop-punk.

None of that means the cave man was good, just influential. I fully realize the influence of these bands...and appreciate that. I just dont like the music. Its as simple as that. I dont have to like the music just because it paved the way for what I do like now.

I should have said he was a good guitarist/vocalist considering he at the same time tries to get the crowd going as well. But I'm probably wrong again.

but it sounded like you were defending billy joe, who wasn't saying "i appreciate their influence, but i'm not a fan" he was just talking shit about them. i never said anyone had to like a certain band, just at least respect them.
and, billy joe may be good live, i'm not sure i've never seen green day live, and i plan on keeping it that way, but he still has no talent as a singer, or guitarist. james hetfield from metallica does both at the same time, but is talented so it works

1) you spelled KURT cobain wrong
2) jimmi hendrix is by no means the best guitarist ever, yngwini is better than him, and rhandy rhoads was better than him to name a few. the only way one could argue that he was the greatest guitarist ever, is if you would take into account his inginuity, the impact he had on music and his influence, in which case you'd also have to say that oldschool punk bands from the 70's and 80's are the greatest punk bands ever.
3) "the 90's was one of the best decades of music." one word, dude; blasphemy

Go watch some of the old videos of those influencial punk bands, half the time the singers cant sing and play guitar at the same time. It takes too much skill to do so. They were not great musicians, but they were extremely influential and I do respect them for that.

Exactly. Why do you think NoFx put out those two 7". (Fuck the Kids, Surfer) Because Fat Mike felt that had gotten too good at what they were doing (Melvin and Hefe are sweet ass guitarists) and he wanted to do a more 'punk' album.
