I dont really like Brand New, but even if they went on TRL, if they hadnt changed their style or anything they wouldnt have sold out.

if u like a band and they sell out, why do people atomatically not like them anymore? It's about the music, not about the fact they make apperances on TRL. Is it becase you wanna be "cool" punkers and only like bands the main stream people have never heard of? Well, if u think about it, your not being main stream to like Brand New, When or If they become sell outs, because you adored them when no one else even knew who they were. People might say, Hey you like brand new? You dont know anything about good music, and you can say.... I liked brand new way before you even know they existed, so tell me about not liking good music, then you can go into other good bands you like. Its not all about likeing what other people dont know about, its about liking the music for the music, not just for the sake that no one has ever heard them before. So who gives a shit if brand new sells out? as long as they still make good music why can't you still like them?
excellent point again ... the trl thing was more of poking fun than a definitive statement .. i don't want everyone using that as like .. backgrounds for this whole thing =\ but regardless there's not much we can do because everyone is slowly starting to like all the bands that we've been enjoying .. but that's what happens when someone tells someone who tells someone about this great band they just found .. wherever. the music is good so it gets shared and becomes popular .. it's something we should take as a blessing and not be selfish or whatever it is that causes everyone to go crazy once a band gets semi popular ..

Brand New is doing just the opposite of selling out - compare their 2 albums....their first album was almost ALL POP PUNK. Their new album is written with incredible lyrics, different instrumentals, and a more intense sound - they took a step forward musically but a step back in the whole "mainstream" game. Just listen to the album and you'll see what i mean. "The Quiet Things" sounds somewhat like the stuff on their last album but nothing like anything on the new one. They still had to keep their style though but if anything they've only gotten better. Say they've sold out if you want but that's total bullshit. I guarantee they don't go platinum or anything like that because the "mtv crowd" would rather listen to their old stuff than new because they really don't know what good music is....

I agree. If you've liked a band from day one and they get popular, why can't you still like them? Thats what happend to NFG and I still like them. Their popularity will fade.

it's a cycle dammit...don't you people notice it!!! Green Day had a huge underground following...bam they sign onto reprise and get on mtv and they lose tons of their hardcore fans...blink 182 was another...yet both bands never changed their music to get airplay...blink was still an obnoxious bunch of idiots we've come to love and stalk...same goes for NFG...dunno about good charlotte though...never knew much of their old stuff anyway...I think bands that are selling out are all those bands that wanna act all screamo and shit...I think midtown is a good example...I think midtown..could be the movielife...who ever made forty hour train ride back to penn or whatever...they were pop punk two years back when pop punk was the thing...now they're this new crap which is unbearable (to me)...they have sold out.

i want to sell out...but i'm a trendwhore....so whatever...and I don't think Brand New has sold out, They are just not catchy enough to attract mall kids or whatever, like GC is really up beat / gay and apparently that's the fad at the moment, BN (their new album at least) is just more mellow i guess, but still intense, and i don't see any 12-14 year old girls screaming to hear about most of the things that jesse is singing about...but that's just me...

the funny thing is no one ever made and post saying they sold out, and all you fackers are all blah blah blah
I was channel surfing, and on mtv it was the diary of avril (I was really sorry i missed it too, I needed a laugh.) and next to the credits was the brand new video. I thought that was funny.

Even the lyrics are intense in that they're quite deep, unable to me comprehended by the general public (let's face it, most people are dumbasses). And I kinda saw that Suckerpunch was being sarcastic, because they're doing nothing to be considered selling out. That's changing your music style, not getting people to vote for you to be on TRL or something. And even if they did, I bet they wouldn't go on a campaign to get there. They'd be voted on out of true musical skill.

now alex, why did you bother to make another "selling out" thread. i thought we were over topics as lame as this? for future reference, let's keep sell out talk on the DL. the newbies get upset.

Movielife didnt sell out...they have the same sound on both albums...and on neither one could they be classified as "screamo" by any stretch of the meaning. And on top of all that, they're really not that popular...so if they supposedly "sold out", it didnt help them any.

Sellouts. What can I say... Brand New is not a sellout band and I don't think they're going to get there. Has TRL become the highest point in selling out? When popularity crosses the line between underground and mainstream teenie shit then is it then that we call our bands that we've loved for so long sellouts? I do not understand this. It can be hard at times to tell who has really sold out. Music can be away to express yourself and how you feel. That changes so your music changes blah blah blah. But then you get the fuckers that do it for profit and fame goes to their head and all they want is TRL TRL TRL TRL TRL... and they begin to talk shit about other bands just because they got super popular off their mainstream/gayshit sound. But it's all good.

They are hardcore about their fans...didnt they get in a fight with a bouncer at a show a while back when he got to rough with the kids?

alright well then I fucked up, I'll admit, but they're not sellouts based on your definition of a sellout. Mine is a band that changes their sound and or style in order to be part of the "big" thing or to become more popular. And I think the movielife did become more popular with their new release...but that's me.

it doesnt mean they changed to become popular or make money. they probably just progressed as a band. doesn't every band do that? i mean, how boring would it be if brand new came out with a new cd just like your favourite weapon? new sound doesnt mean sell out. when you become a trend whore, doing it for money, following orders from some big wig at some huge record label, giving you specific instructions on what to do and how to be and making big bucks, thats when selling out plays in. when it is not longer an art, but a simple way to make money. when it loses its creativity. when you dont just make music for the sake of making music. when you do what the fans/everyone else wants you to do, not what YOU want to do. </shannon's theory>

i couldn't have said it better. the thought makes me shudder. i guarantee that, within time, brand new will become the new 'mxpx'. not in a musical sense, but in the sense that kids will soon be replacing 'oh, if you know who mxpx is..then you're punk' with 'oh, if you listen to brand new, you're a real punk'. not long ago, a boy was baffled that i 'could even say i like punk rock' because i told him i could not stand mxpx. goddamnit. sometimes i wish i could burn this whole fucking country down along with all the little trend whores who make up the foundation of our society. school is going to be hell this year.
I dont think mxpx are exactly the poster boys of punk....
