I know we all go to school to learn, but with all the drama and gay crap going on,
no one ever really focuses on it. so what's the real point of school? The only subject
that has any meaning whatsoever is english 1-4. so why do we need everything else?

what the hell do you mean by "drama and gay crap"? and no...english is important but pretty much all the primary courses have some important element in the future.
history tells you how to learn from the past as well as to tune your memory so you at better at remembering stuff. math...for me its stats...but for others its stuff like calc...teach you how to analyze the information in front of you.
foreign languages help you learn about other cultures. you go to other countries and maybe you can actually talk to people there instead of talking in english.
i dont understand why you think school is worthless...would you rather be working a 40 hour week? i know i sure as hell would not. college has been the best 4 years of my life. and i would not give it up for the world.

Well that was a pathetic attempt to make school sound pointless...
If you ask me, it is completely necessary. The only time that school seems pointless is when you get home after and think about what you did, when you realize that all you did was watch movies all day then, yes, it is pointless. But everyone still needs to go to school because you don't watch movies in school everyday. And school can actually help take your mind off of all that stupid drama shit even if it's in school. You don't have to focus on that stuff...

But regardless of how much you think you'll use it, there's no denying that math class can take your mind off of other drama shit that might be going on. You always have to be thinking and doing stuff, it's not just reading and analyzing (which is very easy to get distracted from), you have to keep thinking about what you have to do...IMO.

i think a lot of it also has to do with social elements. it basically teaches you how to act and how not to act, and also helps you learn how to deal with, um, "drama and gay crap." of course, a lot of people go through the whole thing and learn absolutely nothing.

Oh and grow up, there's no "drama and gay crap." You're probably a Freshman, so just wait until you get older..you'll notice there's really no drama. It's called life. High school so far has been the best three years of my life. Next year I'll be a Senior and I absolutely don't want to graduate. I'm having that much fun in school. College is going to be even better. It's only a waste of time if you don't learn to enjoy it. Also, join some clubs or be on some teams. That's the great thing about high school: freedom. You can do whatever you want, so make the best of it.

Hahaha, i used to think that school was a waste of time... NOT!!
School is one of the most important things in your life. If you don't have a good education, then you most likely won't get a good job, so you won't go anywhere in life.
I have to agree with Broken Parachute, i think you're just a freshman. Well SUCK IT UP. My freshman year was AMAZING last year. Do your self a favor, make some more friends, stop complaining, join some clubs or a sports team, and get over yourself.
By the way, the school year's almost over (if it isn't already) so suck it up and get through it.

I dont know what high school you go to, but I know I'm dont have "freedom" in my high school. I cant wait to graduate in 10 days and get out of high school.
I only hate high school because I know most of my teachers only care about money and not about education (I heard most of them say it to other teachers, maybe not in those exact words, but something like that) and they only care about the students following EVERY single rule, that's probably what made high school stupid to me, was the fact that if my teachers dont care, why should I?

My public schooling got in the way of my education, I spent a lot of my own time reading and teaching myself. College however is different.
I still agree that school is highly necessary...
And of course other subjects are worthwhile.. History is incredibly important.

Then again, I am kind of knocking public schooling in my area. It straight up sucks over here.

I'm guessing that most people who say that school's a waste of time are generally angry because you're not doing well.. Because frankly, even at a basic high-school level, it's pretty damn important. Without school, I'd be a lazy bum without any motivation to do anything XD. And I wouldn't have met most of my friends.. Without schooling, you wouldn't know anything about even the basic stuff like chem, physics, history, etc.. And math is definitely important.. You'd sound hell of stupid if you didn't know about WWII, newton's law of gravity, the elements, etc; you couldn't really help it if you didn't go to school, but still..
lol, teachers don't make lots of money regardless if they go to private or public schools.. And maybe I just had good luck, but all the teachers I've had chose to be teachers, and enjoy teaching us. Though some of them weren't exactly my favorite people ever, they put a lot of effort into what they did.
High School teaches you how to deal with people, even if it is in the form of "drama and gay crap."
"Easy" classes prepare you for logical thinking, problem solving, and work ethic.
"Hard" classes prepare you for college and help you get acquainted with the subjects you will be majoring in.

School isn't a waste of time, but most of the children try their best to make it a waste of time for themselves.
Go to school, pay attention, stop talking to all your friends in class, and you may come away pleasantly surprised with all the useful stuff you will learn.
Most students don't understand that the teachers really are there to teach you important things, but high school teachers have to spend so much time disciplining students that its difficult to teach a really compelling lesson.
If you try shutting your mouth and opening your mind you may learn some really interesting things every once in a while. Remember, teachers don't make crap...so they are really there because they want to be there for you.

What if it gets to the point of you know more about the subject than the teacher does (I love that situation). Well more this is more realistic, but what happens when you really aren't learning anything? Majority of my classes are plugging stuff in to different 'formulas' (if you would call it that). I learn much more when I teach myself instead of teaching 29 other kids because the teacher isn't good at his job. (My friend and I taught each other a semester of chemistry in about 3 days (I got an A on the final)). In English all we do is read "classics". I don't know, at least this year had a few good books (Catcher in the Rye, The Bluest Eye) and next year has some good ones too (Paradise Lost, 1984)
But yeah I don't think high school was all that fun. Haha I feel stupid saying that it has really been "hard" for me, but what can you do? (the 'high school experience', not the academics.) Next year is my last year and it has been the biggest waste to me. I hope college is more fulfilling.

i dont know why you would not like reading classics...there are not many books written nowadays that hold a candle to books written in the past.

Learning is necessary, but high schools are rarely the optimum way for most people. I went to a montessori school when I was extremely young and learned up everything I was supposed to learn in public schools until grade 7, before I was even in 1st grade. And then only in math did I learn much, I didn't learn new science until biology (but the teacher really, really sucked so it was actually chemistry that I learned anything in). I'm far better off learning material myself, but this is not true of everyone, in fact, isn't it proven that there are multiple kinds of learners ? (I'm an auditory one, if I remember...). The uniformity of public high schools is the issue, standardized tests, etc, are bullshit and everyone knows it, as maybe 10% of kids take them seriously.

To some degree I feel high school was useless, however once you get to college it's different. If you go to learn and not just to be there or just to party and such.
Also, for the most part in high school you don't have much of a choice of what classes you get to take besides some electives.
I felt the exact same way when I was in high school. At the time, good grades and college didn't ring a bell as important in my brain, and now that I am out and decided to take the last year off instead of going straight to college, I realized simply how important it is. I am not working at Toys R Us for the rest of my life.

It isn't that I don't like reading the classics, I just honestly found them boring
but that is my problem (a mix of personal taste and ADD)
I'm sure everybody else loves Hemingway and Crane though, right?
well the year is over
but
english: analyze the selections we read. the questions are generally the same. the only different thing we did was a unit on modern issues. it changed to watch movies and answer similar questions on worksheets
german: all sorts of formulas to create the grammatical structure of the sentences and conjugating verbs and such.
chem: obviously filled with formulas. also it was mainly 'plug and chug' work.
economics: although there was a variety of material, most of it followed similar patterns and went back to the basics. i know it is the teacher's fault, but his tests were set up the same way every time (he also gave us all the answers for some reason).
foods: I don't feel like thinking about it, I'm sure you can find some link to formulas
analysis (basically pre calc): no need to explain

Truth. Those who are dedicated to learning will go straight to college. What happens with the "taking a year off" crowd, is that they end up getting a low level full-time job and love the fact that they're earning enough money to pay for rent, drinks, etc. Once they get used to this lifestyle, they'll never want to give up what they have to go and to tertiary level study.

Yeah I know
You asked how everything came down to formulas
I know that it is essential, but in every class
once you broke everything up
it all just came down to either a bunch of similar topics or the same fundamentals
then you use those in the 'formulas' of the subject
I think they could at least teach us more useful stuff in English
they STILL haven't taught us the difference between 'who' and 'whom', nor do they demand that we know it. The only reason I have a concept of that is because of German. Actually, I've learned more about English in one year of German than three years of High School English. Also, we haven't had to write a proper paper. Sure we've had some here and there, but our English term paper was the longest thing we've ever written (10-12 pages compared to the usual 4-5 the other papers)

there are other ways to learn, i've taught myself alot of what i know (not including grade school) or have just been around people and situations that required me to learn, i'll eventually go back to school though cause certificates and diploma's help alot when job hunting.

Soak up every bit of information you can. You may hate school, but you obviously like music (hence being on this site). Read or listen to some interviews from your favorite bands/lyricists- they all sound well educated and can carry on an intelligent conversation with others. You most likely won't use calculus every day, but I'll tell you that after getting my bachelors degree I can't think of too many of my classes that were COMPLETELY useless. Even if a class is total crap to you, make some new friends.

school isnt completely useless but someone should fix the curriculum there is so much more students should be learning
like for instance more about how our government works instead I know the parliment backwards and fowards but I barely know anything past checks and balances they should teach us more about our own system and a little less about everyone else
AND yes I know it is important to learn about everyone else around us as well for other reasons

I mean in highschool there should be mandatory classes that teach you how to fill out and turn in job applications, dealing with bills + credit cards etc., and other stuff like that.
Some of the things in English and Science are completely useless unless your future career depends on it...
I would say math is the class that is actually worth learning...

School is important because we need to get certificates, which we will need to go to higher education or to get a good job. I honestly think the subjects are useless but the diploma will definitely come in handy, which is why im bothering with it in the first place.
but it is more important for other reasons. it helps teach you responsibility, independence, how to cope with stress, how to make correct choices, make friends you will cherish for the rest of your life, etc.
the social aspects of hs are more important imo than the education. your real education does not start until college. but if you go to hs and do a half ass job...you are fucked come college. and if you are home schooled...there is a much higher chance you will do bad in college than someone coming from hs.
Ur completely right if ur parents arent rich I guess Ull take my order in Burger King In the future
What I mean School is important if u pllan to get money in the future if u arent an actor, a playboy poser, get all ur money from inheritance or a famous musician
im not even going to answer this because this person is a complete, utterly useless, fuckstick

seems like you need to focus on some spelling and grammar. english is probably the most important subject you can take in hs...almost every major in college and most jobs in the real world require you to have good, sometimes great writing ability. many entry level positions require you to read over proposals your boss has written and find all the grammatical, spelling, and weird word usage that should be changed. and most high schools have a class that shows you how to balance your check book...or dealing with bills or cc's. for me it was life math...for other schools it will change.
not to mention if learning that stuff was so important to you then you would ask your parents to help you out with it instead of bitching and moaning about your hs not teaching you it.

I think if you look at the trivial aspects of school, the small, annoying details yeah school does seem like a waste of time. But you have to keep your mind open and look at the bigger picture. Everything will eventually build up to create an independent person who can survive on their own. And drama is in every corner of life, in different forms so it is preparing you in a way.

why do you want to go to a trade school and not a college? what do you want to focus on? i hope its as fun as college...because my 4 years as an undergrad have been the best 4 years of my life.

i haven't read all the thread...but i gotta agree w/ you. High school obviously isn't fun in a lot of ways even though it's important education wise, but i think everyone should experience college. i'm going into my junior year and i know it's important not only education wise, but also socially because i know i've grown so much over the past two years.
No matter what you think about the pointless materials...i know at least college will make you grow as a person more than you will ever realize.

you don't need high school for anything if you really want to go to a good college. you do need to do well in a college with a lower reputation for a couple years in order to transfer to another college if you skip out of high school though.

Trade school is a wonderful idea, because there are so many, with each one giving me opportunities in multiple different jobs.
They have automotive trade schools, computer & technology, etc.
Trade schools don't care about your grades from high school, as much as colleges do. You can get your degree in 2 years...if its one that is far away from your home, then the schools usually give you your own dorm. They also get a part time job set up for you while you're in schooling.

That was true like 30 years ago or if you are from a very welathy family. For everyone else school is a must (in 95% of cases) if you want money, not that everyone does.
Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Michael Dell, Sheldon Adelson, Larry Ellison, and Paul Allen represent some of the richest people in the world and none of them have an undergrad degree. All it takes is an idea and some motivation, having a degree isn't always important. That being said, I am in college now and it has been the best years of my life, so it all depends on the person. People like Trump and Buffet both have degrees and are worth billions each.

i'd have to admit, i do think some of the stuff you have to do in high school is a waste of time, but only some of it. especially in NY with all the stupid regents tests you have to take to graduate which mean nothing to any other state if you go out of state to college.
now those things are a complete waste of time and we would learn more if we didn't have to study all freaking year for a test that usually is damn near impossible to pass as the state somehow or another screws it up. my math regents had calculus on it when it was only for trig and algebra. stupid state board screwed that one up.
i think this thread was only referring to high school so that's it on the educational front for this post i guess.

As annoying and gay school is, not going would officially make the United States of America the shittiest country in the world. Theres a reason we go, if we all knew nothing, our economy would suffer greatly and we would pretty much self-destruct. I plan to go to college and study architecture, I could completely care less about anything to do with science, I hate everything about it, but I'm doing good in it so that I can get into a college that I want to, and prosper in life. That way when I'm 30 I'll ahve enough money to fuck aroudn all the time. Plus get all your school work done and then go have fun at nigth and on the weekends, its really not that bad, and as long as you have friends in school you can bassically fuck around to an extent. Its all about how you manage your shit and whether or not you slack ass. But still, fuck school. Haha
