I'm sick of bands of that have no real melodies or lyrics and that's all that seems to prevail at my school. So lately I've been looking for some mellower stuff. Nothing like the Shins because in my opinion, they are quite boring. Just something with a melody and a good lyricist. Indie music is a scene i'd like to explore more.
Any suggestions?

I think that was the point. Because that person was joking.
I think if you want some good mellow/indie music, you should check out Kevin Devine, Something Corporate (RIP), William Tell, etc.
Lots of good stuff there IMO.
