View Full Version : Wyclef Jean To Produce One New Cartel Song

Rohan Kohli
06/02/07, 12:22 AM
According to a recent CMJ article (http://prod1.cmj.com/articles/display_article.php?id=38047277), Wyclef Jean will be producing a song on Cartel (http://www.drpepperbubble.com)'s forthcoming record on Thursday, June 7th. And Amanda Bynes will be stopping by to personally ask the band for a song in her next movie on Monday.

hmmm, hopefully Wyclef wants to approach it as a rock song, not as a way to make a rock / hip-hop genre-bending thing...

That was actually pretty funny! But seriously, how does Cartel expect the fans that they had to stay with them after this is all said and done? I mean, they're just asking to be called sell outs at this point. I loved the Ransom EP and Chroma, but Jesus Christ, there's only so much one can take!

Yeah. the people on this site are pathetic sometimes. People have known from the start that Cartel was a band that has wanted to be mainstream from the start. I hate the fact that people on here feel that they need to talk shit or write bands off just because they get a lot of sponsors or work with famous producers and celebrities. At the end of the day, what matters is how the music sounds....If the album absolutely tanks then you guys will be right, but seriously if the album is great then it doesnt really matter how it was made.

/rant

Wrong. It's impossible to separate music from its context. Everything, from the way the band looks, acts, and performs, to their music videos, press photos, and album art affects the way you feel about them, and you'd be lying if you said otherwise. No matter how this album turns out (and I'm sure it'll be chock-ful of "really fun" songs that are "catchy as hell"), the band will forever be tarnished by this stunt. And really, can you imagine any serious publication giving this album a good review? Even if it ends up being the next OK Computer, no critic is going to feel comfortable giving a positive review to a record that was recorded during a publicity stunt that was subsidized by mega-corporations. Cartel isn't taking their record seriously, and in turn, no one else will.

I'm pretty sure its something Dr.Pepper/MTV threw at them..
I mean, think about it.. this could respark Wyclef's career, since he's been downhill for a few years now.

But seriously,
I don't know why everyone is hating on Cartel so much right now.
So what, that they took an offer by MTV to do this publicity stunt.
So what, if it helps them sell a million records.
Isn't that the main objective of a band? To sell records and make music?
Guess what.. that's what Cartel is doing right now!
Ive heard 3-4 of the new tracks (live) and they sound great, something I'd expect from Cartel.
I'm almost positive they will put out another awesome record, even if it can't top The Minstrel's Prayer -> Q -> A ... that trio of songs was amazing!
Oh well.. hate if you want to, but despite the publicity and such, I'm pretty damn sure that Cartel will NOT make a bad record, especially since more options and doors opened to them from this huge risk they're taking.

They should call the cd "The biggest gimmick in the entire world". It just hurts to think how good chroma was and how this band absolutely means nothing to me anymore.

And did anyone see the fake fight that Wil got into with his "girlfriend" on the phone? It was on one of the commercials, I refuse to watch this circus, but cmon. I'm just wondering if Wil's gunna go on a second date, or take the money.

1) Where have I said I dumped Cartel?

2) What has Fall Out Boy done on this level?

/You should be confused, you have everything wrong.Hey Jason, I just read through that bubble journal entry of yours, and this paragraph struck me the most:

So what's this do? The band was selling around 200,000 copies of Chroma. That's roughly what FOB did with their debut. Who's to say Cartel would not have been able to (sans bubble) release their next album and achieve FUCT like status? I had enough faith in the band to do this - apparently the band themselves didn't have enough faith that they could. Apparently ditto for the record label. This is very close to how I feel. Cartel's last album seemed like it was on the verge of launching them to great success, but it didn't quite make them 'stars.' It did sell a desirable amount of records though, and they'd built up a buzz. Their follow-up to Chroma had the potential to make them the next great pop-punk/rock band, but for whatever reason they lacked faith in releasing an album on their own terms. It's a disappointing thing to witness, especially since we'll never know how well they would've done on their own without dr. pepper (I know I would've placed some bets on them).

C.R.U.X
06/02/07, 12:59 PM
I didn't even know they were pushing 200,000. You would think that amount of records sold would encourage you to not get desperate, but just push through it. Well maybe not desperate, more impatient..

Honestly, how much of an ego were they LACKING in the first place? I don't think its about ego. I think its a loss of sanity.

At any rate, comparing Chroma to whatever FOB has done is moot. I mean, does Cartel want to be compared to FOB? no. How many re-releases? Eh. What's the period of time?

Like I've said before, if Cartel wants to sell 500k and be a flash in the pan fine. But what's the lifetime value of any fans derived from Dr. Pepper? Eh, nil, I'm gonna guess.

Everyone all has their panties in a wad, that people who used to be behind Cartel (me included) are all up in arms with this. Fact is, we expected more from them. The business isn't just music anymore, and you know it, no matter what you think. Especially when everythings already been done.

There is so much to this under the covers that it just turns our stomachs. So what. And, we want to keep talking about it because we expect more for the bands that we put our necks out for. Especially when its a public neck, like some people around here (not me,lol).

You don't speak for everyone. Some people like to know the artist really cares about what they're putting out. I know I'm one of those people. I loved Cartel because I thought they were good guys putting out music that would blow up due to their great talent. I don't respect what they're doing because it's nothing but a gimmick. Tate has put up hard statistics showing how this website is stacking up to Cartel's Dr. Pepper site - it's a sad realization for Cartel. There are ways to put yourself out there without it looking ridiculous. Unfortunately the boys of Cartel seem to skipped over that little detail and resorted to a gimmick that really won't help in the long run.

So yeah, just because you will love whatever is plopped into your hands, doesn't mean everyone else will.

First, I have neither the time nor the inclination to argue semantics with you, which is what you do best when you argue with no basis. However, it would seem you are pissed at Cartel, as you should be. So point 1 check. Fall out boy has corporate sponsors, incorporate R&B producers, have their own action figures, grace the covers of teeny magazines, unleash terrible bands into the world(PANIC!), appeared on cribs MTV, hosted MTV shows, and also they lied about being signed to a major. They in fact were up streamed, or down streamed, whatever you call it. Oh yea, and why aren't they allowed to talk about that first record? That's everyone's little secret too. I'm sure there are at least 50 other things that could be mentioned but that is just a start. :)

However, it would seem you are pissed at Cartel, as you should be.So point 1 check.

Point one was that I "dumped Cartel" - that would imply I no longer support the band, post about the band, talk about the band, and so forth. None of which is true.

None of which are on the level of this act (and many of these things aren't true, and others that are true can be explained quite easily).

I just hope the next album's good and honest, and that no part of the band makes a Wentz of themself.

First, I have neither the time nor the inclination to argue semantics with you, which is what you do best when you argue with no basis. However, it would seem you are pissed at Cartel, as you should be. So point 1 check.
