Those bands are obscure?

....Well, yeah.

98% of the bands listed, I have never seen mentioned on these forums. And, considering the majority of the board still listens to crap like Underoath, yeah, it's obscure.

And uhh, judging by the picture on your profile, you're fisherknight on slsk, right?

lol, how the hell did Fuel get in there? They're one of those popular alt rock bands.. I've heard of a few of the bands, but yeah, most of them are doomed to loom in the dark pit of obscurity forever ;-).

Those bands are obscure?
That's what I was thinking...

And re: Fuel, you have the wrong band. He's talking about the punk band of the late 80s/early 90s.

The obscurity of these bands is relative. I've heard most of them due to Chickendude, when he was on a posting early 90s emo bands kick, a good deal of them came up. And most of the skramz people have heard of some of them, at least. (Everyone knows about Bear Garden, for example). But I'm going to make a list of just the obscure bands I'd recommend highly.
(oh, you skeleton!) Not huge into the "whistleblower"? sound.
After School Knife Fight They have a very childish sound to them. ("His excuse: that he wasn't photogenic. But, the truth: he's just ugly") I believe they were all about 16? I like it a lot.
Anger is Beautiful Nice german emo, post2k, not sure exactly which dates. Pretty brutal.
Bear Garden* (Released Disco Biscuit EP, one of the better recent ones)
Bleed
Breathing Walker (Its moss icon but more tribalistic, actually the best Moss Icon songs were made by this group)
Bucket Full of Teeth* This is one of the best emoviolence bands
Cedar of Lebanon
Don Martin Three Seminal mid 90s emo. You HAVE to listen to thisssss.
Elements of Need A self-titled 7", split with Jasemine, and a couple comp songs. Played around with quiet/loud dynamics a little. I think the Jasemine split is far better than any of the other releases.
End of Century Party* Orchid (another Emo violence band, Orchid is better)
Fall of Boss Koala* Rehashing what's been done before. Doesn't really strike me as anything new/worthwhile :/
Five Stars for Failure Amazing! A discography CD was recently released.
Forcefedglass That... "emoviolence" sound, I think? I find it trendy and not very unique, maybe if you like that style you will like them, though? (Yeah, this is only for emoviolence fans)
Gray Matter One of the popular 80s hardcore bands on Dischord, worth checking out.
Hiretsukan* Not too original but not bad, I like them.
Hoover* Pretty crazy. Sound changed quite a bit. Released some really good material
Hour of the Star YOU NEED THIS NOW
In Loving Memory* This is one of the bands that always puts me in a good mood. Lyrics aren't that great, but everything else is.
Knapsack :/ Never liked them.
Little Rock Nine Nice 90s emo with dual vox. The lyrics are very sincere.
Man Behind Glass I think all they released was a demo? It's great, though!
Petethepiratesquid* Silly name, a few outstanding tracks though.
phasma phasmatis I find them boring.
the pine* I like the s/t and Homeless Life 7" a lot, everything else I can't really get into.
Plunger* AMAZING
Republic of Freedom Fighters - Good song titles, LP is one of my favorite releases, crying over the top of chaotic, heavy guitars.
September AMAZING. Really sad almost IHM-esque lyrics with some of the absolutely best song structure I've ever come across. You need to listen to this record all the way through or else you can't really appreciate it.
Shotmaker Another pretty popular early 90s hardcore band. Nice dynamics, although the discography is a bit lengthy. Sometimes I wish bands wouldn't release so much. I'd like them much better as I think they never really changed their sound enough for the entire discography to remain interesting.
Sinking Steps...Rising Eyes Not a huge fan.
Takaru*
The Trigger Quintet AMAZING, you can download their s/t I believe off last.fm. DO IT!
Torches To Rome (Ok, they are hardcore, but they need more love) Pre-Bread and Circuits. LISTEN TO THIS!
Van Pelt Was never that huge into these guys, either.
Weep 100% whiny emo. You need this.

I've tried to trim that list down a lot. I've starred anything I think isn't that rare. In order for this to be less of a pointless namedropping thread, I'm going to come back in and edit reviews attached to each of the bands. Because really, all it is at the moment is pointless namedropping.
Edit: almost all of the descriptors are by Chickendude.

I'm glad that I know all of those and don't know why I didn't put Phasma Phasmatis in there or After School Knife Fight. ASFK is one of my favs.

Stuff like Bucket Full of Teeth, Gray Matter, Hoover, and especially Knapsack, IWouldnt consider obscure. But, whatever floats your boat mate. still great stuff.

Also, as a note, Petethepirate squid was on a 4 way split with a couple of other bands, not just a demo. That happened to catch my eye.

Just to defend this list, I don't neccessarily think greatly of absolutely all these bands, some of them aren't that great, but, again ,it's only a list, and I thank all who decided to put opinions in each of them. I got tired just writing the band names, so, forgive me. I plan o ntaking all the commentary other people wrote and put it up there, so thanks guys.

Yeah, thats why I wanted to add review or at least notes on what the bands sound like, I even said that in my most. It doesn't serve any purpose at all otherwise. Now at least I'd think you have some idea of what it sounds like, and if you'd even like it.

With a music rec, especially ones so obscure like this try: adding a reference of where people can hear a sample of the band's music would make a lot of sense. Maybe even a 'sounds like' or for 'fans of' type deal to give people a heads up if they want to skip a couple bands or 20 of them. Also maybe noting if the band is not together or still active so they can get heads up see one of the live or understand they shouldn't expect new material from a band already broken up if they enjoy it.

But that is my two cents on the issue, looks much better than just listing a bunch of names that are completely against the normal or majority on this website and that maybe 20 actual users know of or like half the bands on the list itself.

I mean I could list all the bands in my itunes too, but what is that going to help or do without some sort of reference to help get the music out to people who are looking or want to understand?

Working on it.

I like most of those bands. And it's quite a coincidence. I can't say any of them I'd want to listen to all the time, but I have my different moods, and yes, I've listened to all of them.

Putting a note on each of them was too much work at the time. I'll make sure to add more about each later.

I would have died to find this list a couple years back, so I disagree that even just a list of names isn't helpful.

Nevuk
06/05/07, 09:02 PM
Thats always been my main issue with the list, it gives absolutely no clue at all about 99% of the bands it has in it. Is it useful? Yes, because once you have heard of a band you can acquire material off of it, but I'd never know what was what based upon it. Its still useful, but it would be a much greater aid with info about what each band sounded like.

I thought she said there were no U's, but I'm just really oblivious to everything tonight.

I don't know, are they obscure? I'm bad at that game.

There's a bunch of U's. There's no Y's. I could put Yaphet Kotto or various other bands, but, not obscure enough IMO.

I've never heard of them ,but I looked them up and they're pretty good, and they're associated with Daighila somehow, and they're rad.
