Actually, Jerry answered number 4 with "14", indicating that he misread it as LETTERS instead of words. However, he answered number 10 with "three words" indicates that he considers "A" a word.

The way I understand it, "A" by itself isn't automatically a word, but when used as an indefinite article, it's just as much a word as "the" or "some".

But who cares anyway? My quiz was a joke.

It's because your teacher is one of the many people who feel that they hold some kind of a monopoly on the English language.
