k im kind of stupid about these sorts of things, and sorry if this has been posted already cuz i dont post on the politcal thing a lot. and you can tell me if this sounds stupid but ok.
its now estimated that 5-10k have died just in france because of heat-related issues. by most accounts, these are caused by global warming. the u.s. causes the most polution, by a lot, of any other country. im guessing by far. however, bush has not told any companies to stop poluting so much or, as far as i know, taken any big steps.

arent we partly responsible for all these deaths?!?! if so why the fuck isnt anyone complaining!?! i havent heard anyone mention our potential part in this, or anything relating to that, on tv, radio, anything! although i dont keep up on these things as much as i should but still this is a big fucking deal and it should be a big deal to all us in america as well, theres a LOT of people dying!! so correct me if im wrong (on all of this). but its been bothering me so i just wanted to hear wut you guys think

the US isn't the biggest polluter in the world...
and another thing, it was a heat wave, it was no hotter in france than it gets in any other part of the world, the reason those people died is because they were unprepared for the heat, not because the heat was ridiculously high...and i'm almost positive that no one is responsible for the weather...global warming has raised the temperature a couple of degrees at most, and the threat of it isn't that it will create 130 degree heat waves, it is that it will raise the temperature just enough to melt the ice caps...
Good try blaming America first though. Not suprised...

A. there is no source to that statement
B. it is only speaking in terms of CO2 emmisions, not overall pollution.
C. that is the problem with Common Dreams, they conviently leave out facts to fit their story...

And if the US isn't the biggest polluter in the world, then which country is?
Correct me if I'm wrong.

umm obviously people in the middle east live with heat all the time, just like i often live with like 100 degree weather in the summer, but its all relative, in europe its often way way cooler. the fact that they are, quote, pussies, doesnt change the fact that nearly 10,000 people died because of heat.......

they died due to their own ignorance, if you leave a child in the back seat of a car for 2 hours with the windows rolled up in 100+ degree weather, bad things will happen, it certainly isn't america's fault.

First, to superheroineaddict, the US is probably one of the few countries with as much "enviromental laws" and "low emission-low horsepower cars" in the world. Have you been to Mexico? Italy? Tunisia? Morroco? Turkey? These countries, which I have witnessed first hand, are hundreds of more times more polluted than we are. Honestly, people in the US flip when somebody forgets to recycle a tuna can. When I lived in Italy, people would toss their waste into a large pile on the street, and maybe, if he felt like it, the garbage man would come sort through the pile for salvagable stuff. Stray dogs run all over, I guarentee you none had their shots...and look at the Fiat's they drive... leaded fuel...thats the best part. And, if you want to find another big polluter....see Saddam. Burning of crude oil isnt exactly enviromentally sound.
And I find it hillarious that all of these French pussies died in 95 degree heat. Thats just classic. I mean, hot weather is no fun...but really, they may have crested 100 degrees over there...but come on, how many people died? Talk to the troops in Iraq wearing all that gear in the dessert, running around, at 120 degrees....French pussies...

yeah, it was hot, no disputing that, but its no hotter than anywhere else in the world, massachusetts gets in the high 90's all the time, and its ridicuolously humid as well, but few people die as a result. the french government should have told people how to deal with the heat if they were really to ignorant to figure it out themselves.

They aren't "pussies", they're just acclimatized to their environment. It hit 38 degrees (celcius) in Britain, and that was the highest temperature they had EVER recorded. If you aren't used to the heat, it can be deadly, and it sure as hell isn't their fault. If you're used to moderate temperatures, why the fuck would you buy an air conditioner? Someone in Bermuda isn't going to buy a space heater "just in case" they have a sudden snowstorm.
I often find it funny how people in the southern states can't handle snow. Here in NF, we get a few feet of snow, and go about our business. In Georgia, 2 centimetres fall, and they call in the national guard. This doesn't make them pussies, it's just something they're not used to.
And American troops train for this type of thing. They don't just get dropped into the sweltering heat of Iraq without some previous conditioning.
But this heat wave isn't the result of global warming, it's a heat wave. Global warming is causing gradual changes, no sudden drastic changes.

When did this become a personal attack? By the way, heroin (the drug, which I believe you were referring to) is spelled without an 'e.'
I believe I did state, "correct me if i'm wrong."

i dono man, no one was expecting it. euro's arnt really used to the AC and shit, so when a heatwave comes we all just melt....or swim. the french had the most trouble because they didnt have enough beds in there hospitals. Yeah of course the gov should have taken action to at least warn people ...but you know...the french way of thinking...they wouldnt really listen to chirac if he'd blabber on about how to protect yourself from heat.

It was warm over there...fine. Hotter than usual. Fine. But the temperature barely peaked over 100 degrees, their usual temperature isnt much below that...it was a little warmer than usual, drink water. The human body can survive 97 degree heat just fine, no matter where you are from...

But it stayed that hot for weeks, and the human body (if it isn't accustomed to that) will fail at such temperatures. Don't believe me? Look it up

I dont think that a change from 77 degrees to 97 degrees, although drastic, is going to kill a smart person...or someone who is smart enough to drink water....

i survived over 21 years of not having AC in 95+ degree heat, people survived thousands of years in extreme heat with no AC, not having AC isn't a death sentance in a heat wave...locking a kid in a car with the windows rolled up for a couple of hours is. But you're probably right, i doubt anyone would listen to the government at first, people rarley do.

thanks for that.
brandnew, i cant beleive you actually take a slight pleasure and amusement that some people are not used to the heat and that many died from it. thats just fucking wrong. i dont care if u dislike the french, in fact, im not fond of them either, but that was seriously a bit to far.

congrats u win the biggest asshole of the day award.
*many of europe's buildings do not have AC as they are old
*most of the "pussies" who died are older people who can't easily move about to change/get water/call for help, etc.
*france has some sort of new deal where you work 4 days a week which would mean there are less people working at hospitals at a given time
*maybe 100 degrees isn't a lot for you, but it obviously would be for people whose climate is a lot cooler.
*ronin is correct about it being a heat wave so i dont believe that america is in any way responsible for this, but this proves that they wouldn't have any time to prepare anyway
