MxPx (http://www.absolutepunk.net/mxpx) - Secret Weapon
Release Date: July 17th, 2007
Record Label: Tooth & Nail Records

Without MxPx this website would not exist.

I'm not aiming for overdramatics to spice up the opening line of my review, I'm being dead serious. It was MxPx that pulled me out of my junior-high years of Pantera and Metallica. It was MxPx who were (along with Blink 182) one the first bands covered by the original AP.net. It was MxPx who, upon first listen so many years ago, drew me into the melodic world of fast drumming overlaid with lyrics mostly about (failed) relationships.

Now - almost 12 years later - I'm still listening.

This is a band that has been around for over 10 years and released (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mxpx#Discography) over seven full-lengths, four EPs, three compilation CDs, and one live album; almost all of these with the same three members. They've written songs from each end, and just about every level in-between, of the pop-punk spectrum. Fast and raucous to extremely poppy - they've done it. This foray through an assortment of styles has left the band with a blend of fans. Most vocal are those who pledge allegiance to the sound of the band's roots and have been wishing for a repeat of the Life in General and Slowly Going The Way of the Buffalo era. For me, my favorite song has always been "Doing Time" and my favorite album Slowly Going the Way... - so while I may be in the minority for having enjoyed all of the band's releases, it's been a while since I've genuinely loved one.

Secret Weapon has undoubtedly changed that trend.

While semi-recreating a sound that draws influence from the early 90's, MxPx and producer Aaron Sprinkle have been able to put together a fresh mix that results in a feeling of re-birth. A feeling that says an old fan could fall in love with the band all over again and a new fan could discover the band for the very first time. Due to this emerging dichotomy, this review will contain thoughts and feelings from both perspectives. While drawing on references to the band's extensive back-catalog I will also be pointing out qualities that should be helpful to the MxPx virgins.

The regular version of the CD spans 16 tracks and covers roughly 50 minutes of playing time. The majority of the songs are fast-paced (think Teenage Politics/Life In General) and meant to be played loud. If "fast pace" was a vertical line - you would find a spattering of tracks on either side. Some reaching for a more melodic range (think "My Life Story" and "Study Humans") and others ignoring the mid-tempo and simply playing faster than your ears can keep up (think "Fist vs Tact" and "Talk of the Town"). Every member of the band is playing as well as I've ever heard them - great guitar riffs, steady and quick drumming, and some of the better bass playing I've heard this year. Mike's voice sounds good, usually within range, and only occasionally hitting a whiny tone. Aaron Sprinkle's production is fantastic. Smooth and clean - yet clear enough to allow the aggression to shine when needed. The album's lyrics walk through the usual MxPx themes (the pun life in general is too easy not to use) and teeter between simple and slightly corny.

The album opens with two tracks begging to be played at full volume ("Secret Weapon" and "Shut it Down") - both feature brisk drums, clever progressions, and Mike's vocals frantically trying to keep cadence. "Shut it Down" contains gang vocals, a foot pounding intro, and one of the best bridge's the band has ever written. The next three tracks ("Here's to the Life," "Top of the Charts" and "Angels") are arguably the poppiest songs on the album. "Top of the Charts" (a song discussing the current state of the music world - tongue planted firmly in cheek) is probably the weakest song on the entire release. Not quite as cheesy as Before Everything and After's "Everything Sucks" - but almost. It seems every MxPx album has one of those songs. "Angels" contains an opening and styling that reminds me of "Opposite of Intellect”; it'd be my recommendation for the radio single.

The next three tracks kick the album into the next gear. We have "Punk Rock Celebrity" (a track that changes pace mid-song), the one minute twenty second punk rock fueled "Contention," and "Drowning" (which recalls memories of The Ever Passing Moment's "Buildings Tumble").

No album review should leave out "Chop Shop" (a song that begs to be played live with the entire audience screaming the chorus) or the phenomenal bass-solo in (predictably) "Bass So Low." Mike Herrera may be one of the most underrated bass players in this genre - I think the energy and voice he gives to the instrument is extremely impressive.

With 16 tracks - the album feels a slight bit long. While the songs are strong all the way through (from the pure-pop of "Sad Sad Song" to the "Your Problem My Emergency"-esque "Never Better Than Now"), I can't help but feel a slight bit worn when the album ends. Maybe one or two tracks would have been better used as extra b-sides on an already expansive deluxe edition. However, we are left with an album of quality that smells of renewal and revival. This may not be my album of the year – but I consider it fully equipped to blow holes in my speakers all summer long.

To be honest, this may be exactly what our current music scene needs - a swift kick in the ass. I hope everyone that gives this band a listen (for the first or 100th time) is as excited as I was upon my first and (not soon to be) last walk through MxPx's Secret Weapon. A more fitting title I've never seen.

MxPx's Life in General era, pop-punk with as much punk as pop, Decendent's Everything Sucks, or a catchy/melodic band that your girlfriend probably won't steal away from you.

Love the new single. Sounds like classic MxPx.

I haven't truly been this excited for an MxPx record in a long time. Panic was good, but not as lasting as I would have hoped. This one looks to be the resurgence in their discography.

Btw, good review as usual, Jason. I appreciate your honesty and first-hand perspective.

Any why should they have to? MxPx has been doing the same thing for 10 years, and they do it well. Not every band needs to "mature" or diversify their sound. They've been doing what they love and not caving into any trend.

I, for one, hope they never change.

This is soooo very true! MxPx, Slick Shoes, ValuPak, Pennywise....all pivotal in why I started to love punk rock. Jason worded it so well in the opening of his review!

I can't wait to hear this album! I hope they do what new found glory did for my life, sing about teenage angst in the early years and then sing about love and life issues as they grew up with me. The thing I loved best about them compared to other pop punk bands (Which Jason makes it sound like they are keeping) was they weren't afraid of speed songs while still keeping those postive lyrics. Sounds like another good one for pop punk fans this summer!

Agreed! I hate bands that feel they have to "mature". If a bands music should change it should just be a natural progression. These guys have done well, and while none of there albums have ever blown me away I could quite happily listen to any of there albums without too much to complain about.....

I love how long the album is. The last 2 tracks are some of my favorites. It's refreshing to see an album that has that many songs and I personally don't think it loses steam at all. This is MxPx's best album since Buffalo and it's my favorite album of the year so far. I'd give it a 9/10, I have very few negative things to say about it. Can't wait for the rest of the world to hear it and be pleasantly surprised.

While not "dragonforce" or "fall of troy" - I think 8.75 is a good indicator of the musicianship displayed on the album.

Those saying they don't "try anything new" - I think should realize why they're "mxpx." Plus, realize the amount of diversity in their extensive catalog.

They have side projects to play around with new sounds ... Tumbleweed, Arthur, Cooties ...

Out of curiosity, what exactly does musicianship mean? I didn't think it referred just to how skilled each individual member was, I thought it referred to how enjoyable overall the instrumental aspects of the band were. I wouldn't give FOT or DF much higher than an 8.75 either, as both are ... really repetitive, and in love with their delay pedals. A perfect 10 for that would seem to be a classic jazz album like Bitches Brew or A Love Supreme.

I'm not sure there's a definition used exclusively by all reviewers for it -- I know we've had this discussion before and each reviewer sort of views it a little bit differently.

It's a subjective and relative score for me, personally. It usually comes down to the talent displayed when viewed next to the band's "peers" and how all of that dictates the "sound" of the album.

no, they don't. it's really really unbelievable that men their age can still be making so musically juvenile after all these years. oh well...different strokes for different folks.

don't you get it? for many mxpx (and most pop-punk) fans their music transcends the idea of being "juvenile" and becomes an escape that most people seek...there's nothing wrong with enjoying simple music. take jason's article for example...did you read how he claimed that hearing mxpx reminds him of how refreshing it felt to hear this style of music for the first time? if they can evoke that kind of experience (which they obviously do) than their puprose is being well served, and i see no reason to be critical of what kind of music mxpx writes.

16 tracks is pretty bold? try 21 tracks on pokinatcha, 19 on teenage politics, 17 on life in general, and 16 on slowly going the way of the buffalo. all those albums were in their heyday and it certainly worked out well for them, don't you think?

anyway who cares...

mxpx turns me into a little kid and puts the biggest smile on my face. i saw them both in nashville and st. louis on the current tour and i couldn't contain myself. i'm super pumped for the new album and im sure it will be great.

But on a more serious note, why change a formula if it works? MxPx didn't build their fan base on experimentation. Also, by the looks of your profile, MxPx are nowhere near your alley, so what exactly are you waiting for? After ten years, you'd think you would beg for a little maturity from another act. You're fighting a losing battle, kid.

Great album.

As for "trying something new", they're MxPx. I'd be disappointed if I went to a show and had them play anything other than the fast, straight pop-punk they've been doing all these years. While they're style never really changes, everything they release still maintains a fresh and new feeling.

You know whats real sad, MxPx has gotten lost with a lot of people because there is so much crap music that they don't know what real music sounds like. This album and a bunch of their others should and should have gone well over platinum. They are what the punk genre really is.

I remember back in the day driving around town all summer with my friends listening to "Teenage Politics" and "Life In General". If it wasn't for my best friend Tim I would have never gotten into the scene. Then when "Slowly Going The Way Of The Buffalo" came out I was in love with MXPX. They have been an amazing band for all these years and I am so excited to read that they are going back to those roots. Great review! Any younger fans who have never heard of them I strongly recommend them.

AMEN. I'm about 1.5 years late with this post (the news about OTC2 has me going through old posts) but this is SO true. There are many different opinions why MXPX never made it "big" but I would wager that most of the people who listened to them from the start think they SHOULD have been A LOT bigger.

Blame it on their record label, the lack of marketing, the choice of singles, whatever. You could even blame Blink for stealing the spotlight. Point is that these guys HAD it when they were starting out, when they were on the rise. Unfortunatly their cards were not played right and they never quite broke out in the mainstream.
