No idea what's classified as what these days, but wikipedia seems to say that post hardcore is my best bet of putting a name to the kind of thing I'm looking for.

Despite a few exceptions, such as Alexisonfire mainly, I hate screaming, so I'm looking for stuff that's heavy in its own right without much screaming.

Think along the lines of Thursday, Rise Against, Protect the Hero, Thrice... Stuff that's got the riffage and the nice beats but something that you really feel, that isn't just music that's heavy for the sake of being heavy.

I know, I'm not being too clear at all but it's hard to explain what I'm after which is actually very specific.

Silent Drive would be a great place to start. I'm not sure who you already listen to, so I wouldn't know who else to recommend. Post-Hardcore music is aggressive and has screaming, but more complex instrumentals. If you can stomach Alexisonfire then I'd check out Refused (p/h pioneers) and Glassjaw. More recs to follow...

A few more, just to give you a better indication of what else I listen to that is similar includes:

Poison the Well, Chiodos, Emery, Escape the Fate, Every Time I Die, Finch, Killswitch Engage, Senses Fail, Story of the Year, Underoath...

So as you can see, I can stomach a bit of screaming, though very few of these bands are dominantly screaming, most are a mix of both with more focus on singing.

I've done my research, and alot of the bands that are big in the scene that are considered similar to the bands mentioned are either too similar to other bands or are just plain boring... So who better to ask than the people in the know? :)

In that case, I'd check out 36 Crazyfists. I like them better than Killswitch because their singer has a unique voice (which might rub some people the wrong way). Also if you're looking for something a bit more melodic, check out my favorite bands Kid Dynamite and Strike Anywhere. I've also gotten into Billy Talent a lot more.

I'll just reemphasize Glassjaw. Their singer actually appeared on the tracks Project Mayhem and Grey Matter off the Finch album What It Is To Burn. He was Nate's vocal coach for the album, and is totally killer.

Like you, I've gotten tired of these similar sounding bands (most of the Victory Records roster). But I think at least a few of these bands will be refreshing no matter who you listened to first.

And look up the band Counterfit. I think that is how they spelled it. The drummer joined finch after Pappas left.

To be honest, I didn't like Billy Talent much at all, but as you recommended it I've decided to give 'em another try, and they really are quite good, thanks for that... In the process of listening to the rest at the moment, as well as all the other recommendations... Thanks all. :)

Oh, and thanks jcanning, but I forgot to mention I listen to funeral for a friend too :P well, only that album.

I Am Abomination (chops like protest, with no screaming)
Circa Survive (anthony green is a legend, the older the material, the more post-hardcorier, but all of there music is on point)
letlive. (<--- can't fucking encourage them enough.)
Artifex Pereo (very diverse, metalcore/djent/post-hardcore/everything all singing)
Envy on the Coast (R.I.P, all singing)
PMToday (amazing amazing poppier post-hardcore band all singing)
Tides of Man (kind of like circa survive, a bit catchier at points)
Balance and Composure (alt-rock with lots of delay, very passionate and ambientish sound)
Saosin (i'm a fan of the the EP; Translating the Name, and their first LP, first ep mild and light screaming and LP has no screaming)
Sleeping With Sirens (if you like chiodos, you will love this. first album has intermittent screaming on it, second has less screaming)
Us, From Outside (see sleeping with sirens)
Pierce the Veil (scene music done fucking right; poppy post hardcore with some screaming)
Dance Gavin Dance (I'd really just reccomend happiness, since in my opinion the other albums harsh vocalist a bit hard to get into. his style is very throaty and high pitched. On here, they have a different lineup, where the lead guitarist Will Swan does some screaming but the cleans are the key focus. musically, band is fantastic, very jazzy and funky on this album)
Emarosa (up until now, featured the vocalist from Dance Gavin Dance (on most of their albums, at least), Johnny Craig, is at the forefront of very melodic and sometimes heavy post-hardcore instrumentals. his voice has a very "r&b" feel)
MSWHITE (RIP) (The Italian version of Underoath)
probably more but i have work to do
