I've been playing the piano for a while now, but want to buy a MIDI keyboard for recording some stuff at home. I was wondering if anyone knew if a MIDI keyboard can hook up directly to an amplifier, or if you have to put everything through a computer first. I don't plan on using any loops or anything pre-recorded, I just want to be able to play it like a normal piano through an amplifier if I ever want to use it live. Hopefully that makes sense, and hopefully I'm not an idiot for not knowing this. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks!
You can hook a midi keyboard up through an amp, just make sure the one you buy has an amp jack (or if it has a headphone jack, get the small attachment.)
I've wanted a small midi for some time now, but drumming is expensive.

oh, and this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=130124090692&rd=1&rd=1) is the keyboard i've been looking at. it doesn't look like it has the right jack, though.

The post above was kind of misleading. You can play a keyboard with MIDI capabilities through an amp only if it is a keyboard in the sense that is has it's own samples with the option of using it as a MIDI controller. A true MIDI controller (or MIDI keyboard, if you will), can NOT play through an amp.

That keyboard is only a midi controller, and it will not play through an amp without a separate midi module.
