Discuss everything golf. (scores, experiences, equipment, Professional matches, etc.)
I think it's due time we had a thread like this, especially with summer being here.

yeah, let's discuss majors and big tourneys (players, tour championship, ryder cup, fedex playoffs) in their own threads though. it seems most casual fans only care about the majors.

I watch every tourny but the majors are usually on tv all day and give me a chance to watch them at work, for that I am greatful.
I am playing tomorrow and I have 4 tournaments coming up in the next few months that I need practice for. My favorite is the 2 man scramble in which you get a stroke taken off for every beer you drink on the course. I am also playing in the Dan Snyder Memorial (former NHL player) this year which I am definately looking forward to.

hitting stingers is pretty easy (not with 2 irons like tiger but 5-6 irons for us humans)...line it up back in your stance, don't take the club all the way back, and 'swing through the low rungs of the ladder'...like, imagine a ladder in front of you, and try to swing the club through the rung of the ladder that you want the ball to travel through.

Played today shot a 51 on the front.
Yards: 3137
Par: 36
Slope Rating: 134
It was so damn hot out that me and my dad didn't keep score on the back and then we just gave up after 13 or 14 or so.
Good round though, score wasn't too hot but I beat my dad and made some excellent shots.

134 is a decent slope rating...looks like you played a tough course. not a terrible score for where you're at either - just keep trying to hit the ball solid and work on your short game, and you'll become even more obsessed with this game than you already are.

Right, actually the course is considered one of the most difficult around Philadelphia. It's called Whitemarsh Valley Country Club, it's known because Jack Nicklaus put his tee shot on #13 out of bounds that almost cost him the PGA tour. In a few interviews, he talks about how difficult of a course it is.
The other thing about this course is that it doesn't usually play to the yards. You can easily overshoot and undershoot each shot because of the fact that the course is in a valley.
Other course stats:
16/18 holes have out of bounds
6 holes have water

oh w/o a doubt. as long as your rhythm is decent, though, the ladder-rung image should be enough to get the clubface square at impact.

I remember the first time I saw Tiger hit one I went out on the range the next day and tried it out. It's tough to hit it at first but once you practice it and get some confidence with it you can really take advantage of it on tight par 4s where you need to put it in the fairway.

the course i play at, you really only hit driver 3x a round (and it's 7000 yards, pretty ridiculous). i hit a lot of 3 irons off the tee, but for the most part i use the shot when i get stuck in the woods and have a bunch of overhang to deal with.

yeah hybrids are alright, but i like my 3 iron. they had to pry my 2 iron from me to put a 5w in the bag, and even then i was pissed off.
there's less room for error with ball-striking, but you can work the ball a little easier with a long iron.

Hybrids and fairway woods are necessary for hackers and for players who play courses which have alot of forced carries into greens where you need a higher trajectory and don't have the club head speed to get long irons into the air. For better players though 3 irons are still fine and reliable for the most part.

You'll never look back. For the longest time I resisted taking my 2 iron out of the bag, but have since ditched both the 2 and the 3 for a 22 degree hybrid (3 iron) and a gap wedge. I have found the hybrid to be superior for both distance out of the rough, and getting the ball to land softly.

The hybrid is definitely the way to go, swings like an iron, hits like a wood. The problem is no matter how many times I hit the ball well with it, I've never been able to trust it.

what's everyone's wedge combos?
i play a standard pw (48°), a sand/gap (titleist vokey raw, 54°/10° bounce) and a lob (cleveland 588 gunmetal 60°/0°).
i had a 58° for awhile, but i found that the vokey raw model actually had like 12° of bounce and was nearly impossible to hit out of anything but tight fairway lies. so i ditched it and went for the 60°, in favor of a club that could get me out of tougher lies around the green.

I dont even know the lofts but I use an Armour pitching wedge and a Mizuno sand wedge. Ive had the Armour forever and love it, I just got the Mizuno a few weeks back. I dont use lob wedges or anything more lofted then a standard sand wedge. My chipping has always been the best part of my game and I generally dont get myself in to many situations where I need a huge loft.

I hate practicing anything but putting, my putting is brutal but if I had a good yard, which my parents do but I dont feel like going there to chip, I would likely practice more. I dont like going to the course or the range and practicing though. I probably should with some big tournaments coming up. Sounds like you can work on just about any possible situation in that yard though.

Putting for me is my best skill. Chipping is also good for me. If I could just figure out how to control my intense slice on my tee shot, I'd be able to get on the green in two for just about every type of par 4 out there.
My clubs are shit, I bought them so I could take them to school and not be upset if I got them stolen. I have my pitching wedge, that's it.
My dad said he's going to look at getting me new clubs when the summer ends because I'm going to play golf for school.
It's hard for me to find clubs because I shoot left-handed.

Since I play for free because I work at a golf course, I go out real late in the day (like around 7:30 or 8) and I practice on the hole itself. I'll shoot till I'm about 50 yards away from the hole, then I'd take the ball and throw it in the sand and practice my sand shots for about 20 minutes. Then I practice putting and do it all over again.

The problem with me is that I'm still right handed, so I'm still using my right hand to power the club and such. It's bizarre and the only person who can really help me is me. I can hit a straight 150-200 yard drive with my 5 wood, but I'm working on controlling my driver so I've been teeing off exclusively with that.

Yeah, chipping from about 100-in is one of my strongest points but I practice it all the time. Sand is what kills me so I've been practicing that hardcore these past few weeks.
As for putting, it's not unusual for me to hit a 15-20 foot putt in 1, but it's something that can leave you in a second so I'm always practicing that too.

My sand play is way different then what most every teacher and pro says to do. I dont like taking the full swing, I have a semi chipping motion and it actually allows me to put more spin on the ball. I feel I am too prone to skulling the ball if I take too big of a swing. Sand play has really become a great part of my game.

skulling the ball usually means that you're swing plane is too shallow in the sand. try a few shots where you stay committed to the shot, and pound the shit out of the ground 1-1.5 inches behind the ball. the result is orgasmic.

I think my problem which causes skulling is that sometimes I move around too much during my swing causing the club to kind of switch its facing in the air and taking a very straight angle at the ball and causing either a skull or just a roller of a shot. I definately need to work on my body control and stature, I look like Angel Cabrera the way he couldnt stop moving for the last few holes on Sunday.

I watched Playing Lessons with the Pros today and they had Chi Chi Rodriguez on his course in Puerto Rico. Dude cracked me up. he said he used to put his hat over the hole after making some lengthy puts but some "lesser guys" on the tour complained he was ruining the hole and the PGA Commish called him to NY and said that he wasn't making him stop, but that he probably should, so he came up with the Sword and he is a bullfighter and the cup is the bull. And after birdies/eagles he 'cleaned' his 'sword' free of the blood, haha.
He used to put his hat over the cup because he said he was playing a kid back in his hometown for a nickle a hole and he made this long birdie putt and a toad was in the cup and jumped out and his ball did too and the kid said it never touched the bottom of the cup so it doesn't count.

But seriously, half the publinx field is comprised of people who have CC access but hide it in almost the same fashion.

I completely fixed my swing today with my driver. I read an article in a golf magazine we get in work and I read that a good way to fix your slice is by taking two tees and putting them in the creases of your thumbs. I did this, then I teed the ball a little bit lower and then put it even more towards my right foot and I did not put a ball shorter than 225 yards straight down the fairway.
Give it a shot, it's worth it.

well why wouldnt you just order a couple of extra wraps on the grip? wouldnt that do the same thing. What thats basically telling you (and most people who slice the ball) is that your grip is too tight, and when you have a tight grip you tend to swing more with the upper half to try and power the ball. Looser grip = looser swing = less use of upper body = more use of lower body = better shots.
After lessons at firestone, I can diagnose and troubleshoot my golf swing... unfortunately, I know what I do wrong on every busted shot which pisses me off even more.

Right, I knew that, but it was an easier way for me to actually identify what I was doing wrong and more importantly, correcting it.

golf digest always has tips that seem to help my game. They have helped me to develop shots to play out of almost any lie. My favorite of which is the wrap around shot.
I played this at our university course the other day and it mystified me that it actually worked. My ball was butted up real close to a tree to the left leaving little room for a follow through. The hole was a severe dog leg to the left and from my position would require a R/L cut shot to bend around the point of the trees. I saddled up to the ball, putting it in the middle of my back foot (basically leaning on the tree) and blasted down on the back 1/3 of the ball with a 22 degree Cobra Baffler. THe ball took off low, avoiding any tree branches and as soon as it was clear of the last tree... cut perfectly R/L. I hit the shot so well infact that it ended up almost 20 yards past the hole but I was satisfied with the performance non the less.
Going home to play three great courses next week. Weds @ Acacia, Thu @ Brookledge and Fri at either The Quarry or Glenmoor.

I have a question for some of you other more intelligent golfers...
So I'm looking to get some new clubs (iron set) and I'm not really looking to spend alot of money. I golf probably like 3-4 times a month, not super good, but I still like going out and playing a round with a friend or my dad or something. I was reading somewhere online about this place www.pinemeadowgolf.com (http://www.pinemeadowgolf.com) that makes clubs that are designed similar to big name brands at a fraction of the price. It seems legit to me and what I've read seems pretty good. I'm wondering what any of your thoughts are on them. Any suggestions you guys got for me are great. Thanks in advance.

Thanks. Next question then... does anyone know if these are available in store or only just online? I know with the online there is a 30 day money back guarantee but it would be nicer to just try them at a store.
Component clubs are rarely a good idea. Sure, they may look just like the real thing, but they lack a lot of the things you can't see that actualy make a good golf club. Golf clubs may not be the best investment, but if you play 3-4 times a month, it's worth investing in a decent set of clubs. You can always get an older model or one of the less fancy versions of a club. In terms of fitting, there is no substitution for being fit in person.

I'm kinda going in the opposite direction of you. I played blades throughout most of my college career and went to a player's cavity back and am about to get a similar set. Blades look awesome, but I get nothing out of them. If I'm not hitting it perfect, all they are going to do is hurt me. And no matter how well I'm swinging, I'm not going to hit them better or be able to work the ball better than with a forged or soft cavity back. The only other kid on my college team who played blades was our worst player, and most of the guys we played against used cavity backs. My best friend who played at UNC played Callaway for his whole college career and even now as a pro he isn't using a pure blade. On a side note, he is probably one of the very few professional athletes who reads this site reguarly. All that being said, the Ping's aren't a pure blade, but are for sure sweet feeling clubs. I have heard though that Ping is going to come out with a new Eye 2 this fall though, that will be more of a player's club, with a thinner topline, reduced offset, etc...

Ebay is the greatest thing for golfers. People get rid of clubs all the time thinking that buying new clubs will cure their slice, eliminate shanks, etc. A couple hundred dollars will buy you some really good used irons. Much better than no-name knockoffs, imo.

True story...
I live in Milwaukee and the US Bank Championship is at Brown Deer Park this weekend (I know, all the good players are going to the British Open, but it's rare we get a big name player to come here.. I think Tiger came once when he was an amateur) but I was on my way to work today, passing the course when I got rear ended. It was Jeff Maggert, PGA Tour golfer. Luckily no damage and both of us were fine, but I thought it was a pretty cool.

Any of the larger headed, forgiving irons. Callaway Big Bertha, Cobra F9, TaylorMade r7, Ping G10 (you can get the G5 cheap in a month though). Probably nothing lower than a 5 iron either.

Mizuno used to be the most used iron on Tour but as more players started getting incentives to play other clubs they went another direction. Tiger played Mizuno for a while as well but eventually moved on to Titleist a little while after he turned pro. I definitely wouldn't recommend buying blades at this point though. Nothing feels more solid in the center but off center hits aren't consistent enough.

the baffler pro is also one of the better hybrids out there. the carbon cb is actually a really solid iron also, but it's something i'm not sure i would want to play. same with the new ping i10. they look really nice, but i've never been a huge ping fan. similarly, the new ping driver looks just as bad ass, i just hope that it doesn't put as much spin on the ball as a lot of ping's previous drivers have.

So, if it doesn't spin much and has a face that won't crumple, it might contend for a spot in my bag. I'd love some company to put more weight higher up on the face rather than just catering to hackers and putting it all on the bottom. That high point on the face above the sweet spot is actually the best contact point since it reduces spin. That's where it would be nice to get in a Tour trailer and get the treatment they do.

A lot of guys I grew up and played in college with now play on various tours (PGA, NAtionwide, Hooters, etc) and I've gotten some stuff from them. I had a tour issue r7 425TP for a few months last year, and while it was long, still put too much spin on the ball. Last fall I got a tour issue HiBore with a Speeder shfat in it, and that's really helped keep the ball down and much straighter. On the launch monitor my numbers are way better with it. It's not as long on a big swing as the r7, but with a stock wing, it's very comprable.
The only other drivers I've liked since it are the Callaway FT-5 and the Titleist 907D2.

Since we were speaking about 3 woods the other day, I was thinking earlier about how much I miss the old Titleist PT. To this day I've never hit a club that felt as good as that one. But unfortunately anything off center had no carry on it so it had to go.

Not related to golf clubs but Im loving the Fed Ex Cup so far, this will be an amazing 4 weeksThat love for it have anything to do with Tiger not playing this week? haha
I like it as well though and the points system is that hard to figure out since the Golf Channel has the projected total on the leader board. Next week should be great even though the course isn't the greatest. I always go to the Tour Championship so this year should be even better since Tiger hasn't played the last couple of years. I'm glad they finally have something to end the season on though. The season has pretty much come to a crashing halt after Firestone so it's good to see everyone playing this time of the year. I would like to see them reduce it from 4 to 3 playoffs events since most players don't like having to play 6 out of 7 weeks and then some have to play the following week in the President's Cup or Ryder Cup. I guess that all comes with the territory though of seeing how it goes one the first go around.

Playing golf 4 days out of 7 for 4 straight weeks isnt that bad of a job, so if you really feel the need to take a week off you are just a big pussy.
That being said its tought to say right now where the advantage lies, I think in order to win the cup you will need to have at least 1 win and Tiger has that ability to win every week which most guys dont have. It will be interesting to see how he performs at these next 3 events. I think it will come down to who wins the Tour Championship wins the title. Im rooting for Adam Scott who is lucky to be where he is based on his second half of the season performance. I think a top 5 finsh for Ernie Els this week may boost him up enough to win the title as well.
I go to the Canadian Open every year and thats cool you go to the Tour championship. Ive always wanted to go to one of the huge events like that, the Canadian Open gets some good players but I dont think it always gets the respect it deserves as a should be marquee event.

The PGA Tour announced that starting in 2008 it will test players as part of an anti-doping policy.
The PGA Commissioner announced the policy will list banned substances and the methods to carry out the testing. The drugs that will be banned include anabolic agents, hormones, stimulants, narcotics, beta blockers and masking agents. Details of the penalties weren't given, but it was mentioned that the penalties for violation of the anti-doping policy will be recognized by other world golfing tours. Sep. 20

so i went golfing today for the first time in about 7 years and shot a 54 haha. I started out with a 9 and 8 because I was trying to figure out my swing and how far I could hit each club. by the 5th hole I was just using my 5 wood off the tee because I could hit it about 215-225 and keep it straight, while my driver was all over the place.
I was long on all my irons, too. About 3 times, I was around the 150 yard marker and overshot the green w/ my 9. It's going to take a few rounds to figure out my game again.

Tiger's having a bit of a shocker...

I've figured it out. Tiger was waiting til he was like 15-1 in vegas, put a few million dollars on it. Now he takes it seriously, wins the PGA, and can pay the divorce settlement.

great final round at the PGA. i wouldn't mind seeing elkington, mcilroy or watson win.

I miss people closing out rounds...feels like the majors this year, its who misses the fewest shots, not who makes the most. Elkington may win, but he left 2 strokes on the course he should have had by missing fairly easy putts. McIlroy just missed an 8-10fter for Par...etc
I'd love it for someone to go birdie, birdie, par to close it out...rather than par, par, bogey

Jesus...Dustin Johnson might be disqualified because of grounding his club in a "bunker". Of course, there were hundreds of people standing in the bunker watching him play
edit: wow, that thing looks like a worn out patch of sand. If I were Johnson, I'd just refuse to sign the card and walk away

He got screwed. There is no way that was a bunker.
What if he had made that putt? He would have celebrated and then have it taken away.

If the gallery can step in it, it shouldn't be a bunker.

I didn't even think about that....now that would have been an amazing story...at least this way they can say "maybe he wouldn't have won"

Yeah...when they went back to it, the only part that looked bunker-like was the right edge, but, there were people standing on that during his play. Pretty crazy

its the trademark of a pete dye course to have bunkers all over the place. i don't agree with the ruling but i can understand it.
Just brutal. Can't believe that break for DJ. I almost made my avatar Bubba Watson this weekend but I didn't want to jinx him.
Nice put by Kaymer.
