View Full Version : Warped Tour. Is it sacred anymore?

Today was an eye opener for me.
I came across an issue of Cosmo Girl and was browsing through when I saw that this year's Van's Warped Tour was being advertised on the hot 100 list( i think it was number 28)
Now call me whatever you want but I find something seriously wrong with Warped Tour, a summer tour with mosh pits, stage dives, the works; being advertised on a list that also has Paris Hilton as one of the hottest celebrities. Is nothing sacred anymore?
P.S. I can name atleast 10 girls in my school who are attending Warped Tour this year who cannot even name five bands that will be there. I would have to say this is a problem.

who cares if people that don't necessarily know all or most of the bands go? they'll probably have a fun time anyway and discover new music they may like. the tour has always generated a wide variety of people.

how much does it even cost to go to warped tour?My ticket was $20, but I think they're up to 30 something now. Anyways, I agree that the Warped tour was never 'sacred,' although it is becoming more popular, and alot of people go just to act cool and don't even like any of the bands. But whatever.

06/18/07, 07:18 PM
Mine was like $37.50. Anyway isn't like one of the purposes of the tour to get bands to be heard by new listeners? Who cares if they advertise in Cosmo Girl. Just go to the tour and see the bands you want to see and have a good time. If you don't want to go then don't go. But when I'm there I'm going to be doing it up with these Cosmo Girl readers. ;-)

warped tour is way overrated. It's not the entrance fee that's bad, it's the $3.50 they charge for water.

The better question is : Why is a 10 year old reading Cosmo girl? Even though it's for "young adults" it still has stuff that no 10 year old needs to be familiarized with for at least another 4 - 5 years.
The BEST question is: What does Warped Tour have to do with anything, in the grand scheme of things?

I know what you mean by sacred... The very first summer that I went, which was in 2002, I got to see New Found Glory, Bad Religion, and NOFX. I found out about Something Corporate, The Starting Line, and a few other bands from that tour alone. That tour is really what got me into the music I like now, but looking at the line up for this year, I don't feel as stoked. I think that I would much better fit at SXSW or Lollapalooza. I'm still going though, but it doesn't seem to have the same feel as it did. Then again, my musical taste has changed between now and five years ago.

I wish Warped was like that for my first year. There are only a few bands that I'm interesting in seeing this year and it kind of pisses me off. I wish that there were more bands that I'm into on Warped, but most of them have either already done Warped Tour or wouldn't touch Warped with a 50 foot pole. But 2002 sounded fantastic.

It only sucks this year because the lineup is terrible. Next year it has a perfectly good chance to redeem itself. Also it would be cool if there was none of this "band playing 6 dates and then getting off" crap.

I'm let down with warped tour. I was hoping for some older group kind of like billy idol or even joan jett. the line up doesn't offer enough for me. the bands i do want to see (set your goals) fuckin plays on the west coast. plus warped is in late july early august this year. so its so much later then im used to.
PS the comp pissed me off when it had that one guy from aiden. wasn't impressed.

yea, I gave up gping to Warped Tour like 5 years ago or so. One of the main reasons I gave up going was that the bands were just getting worse and worse by the minute. I remember back in the day all of the good bands were there, not that there are any bad bands there now, but the good bands are alongside some pretty crappy bands. I also agree with you on that it is becoming more advertised, I liked it way better when it was more underground, and people didn't have a clue about it. I also know a lot of preppy girls who will be there, as well. I also wish that I could have gone to Woodstock in the 90's. :(

they may have their generic eye liner bands playing, but there are always a slew of bands that dont look like that, that continue to play:
NOFX
Bad religion
less than jake
new found glory
pennywise
vandals
circle jerks

etc.

you do realize that taste of chaos is ran by the same people right?
of course, what do you expect from kevin lyman (the guy who runs it)? He's such a dick for so many reasons. The least of which being his rants about how he doesn't care about punk music anymore, he just wants money.

i think the thing that sucks most about warped tour is the people that attend; i agree.
the first year i went everyone was really cool and there was a feeling of camaraderie that used to be present in the music scene.
last year, everyone was a drunk jerk who made the tiny girls hold up crowd surfers because they were too lazy to help or pick anyone up.

No it wasn't. It was still sponsored by Vans and it had the pop-punk bands that were popular back then playing, i.e. Pennywise and Nofx. The price wasn't that cheap either. There were some good more hardcore type bands like Sick of it All that played but seriously, it was *always* a corporate tour. Anyway, this thread is ridiculous - when the Warped Tour started most of you were in kindergarten or first grade. Geesh.

Exactly. Being a later tour date my town ends up losing quite a few of the bands, although no doubt some of them suck in general.
But no matter what people come you can't change warped tour, it's still ran by the same people for the same people. All of the chicks or guys that go just because "It's the cool fad" don't step into any of the crowds for the most part, because "they're to tough", so stop being pansys and crying over something that was bound to happen.
We're humans, we poke and prod and try to get our nose in everything that we should stay out of.
