what happened to guitar solos in music? You know where a musician would just blast people with amazing talent,, I remember my friend told me Tom Delonge thought they werent necessary,,, i think hes a fool... but it seems they have just left the music scene.

Yep...
Because bands are just trying to release a 3 minute hit a lot of the time.
Many don't care about quality rather than quantity.
But it's not that bad that they are absent in today's music...because modern bands could never come close or surpass to guitar solos of the past.
I mean, just look at Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb

If you're talking about tom delonge... No. Shit.
Actually, now that you mention it, i haven't heard a guitar solo (or atleast a decent one) in a looong time... Ironically, the last "solos" i heard were the solos in 'Party Like A Rockstar', lol

John Mayer can do amazing solos, but he doesnt do them in his recorded music, his live shows are amazing, like the last post i think hes trying to make 3 minute songs, he needs to forget about that and cut loose, other than that nobody else comes to mind.

Atreyu has some pretty damn good solos, so does avenged sevenfold, now that you mention it. Ever since i started posting on this thread, i've had the solo from 'Hotel California' stuck in my head.

I've noticed a few good Bayside solos lately. I've been playing their new album constantly. It's such a solid album.

To me it is, the only reason i like the eagles (somewhat, if at all) is because of that song. The only reason i like that song is because of the solo in it.

What makes a great guitar solo?
I say: How well it flows...how good it sounds...easy to listen to..an dget sucked into...
I could care less how fast or how many different notes and chords were used...
'cemetary gates' by pantera.
that one is sexy...
some metal bands still do guitar solos, and they aren't all bad.
mcr has some cool solos...
If by "have cool solos" you mean re-hash cool Queen solos, then you'd be spot on.
and The Eagles suck.

I remember when Tom would play little pop-punk solos...the solos on Chinese Hoax kicked ass for Delonge's ability, especially 'Better Days'.

In my bands songs, we leave spots for solos in pretty much every song. In some of the songs, the 'solo' is the basic riff played on a higher string with some fill-ins added. In others, it's an actual solo, but my guitarist always improvises it, whether we're recording or playing a show. But I mean, sometimes having solos gets boring. Some bands just like to get their songs overwith. Nothing wrong with that. And some bands just prefer to only play solos live. That'd be more exciting I think, hearing a spontaneous solo you don't normally hear when listening to the record.
There are bridges in a lot of recent songs. I do believe the bridge is the new solo.

I am glad many new bands don't do guitar solos as I doubt that they could live up to the legends.

Oasis - Live Forever - great solo
Oasis sucks a bag of dicks.
Anyway some great solos are
Brian May (Queen)- Killer Queen
Jimmy Page (Zeppelin)- Communication Breakdown
Dave Gilmour (Floyd)- Time
Many bands still solo, The Shins have the occasional solo, John Mayer does in his recorded music too despite what some guy said about how only in his live show, and so do lots of other bands whose names currently escape me.
