with the release of a live album this year (the abattoir blues tour), it’s time for a thread haha. rootsy music concocted from chaos, but anchored in a flicker of gospel & worldly sounds. nick cave, along with his multi-instrumentalist mates, are some pretty nifty songwriters. incorporating pieces of many genres (from smooth bastard blues, punk outbursts, folksy blues, gospel hymns, to wonderfully arranged pop ballads) to complete their musical puzzle. each album is filled to the brim with a collection of diverse sounds & songs, enough to hold the interest of pretty much anyone. with so many comparisons to the great tom waits, but with a bit more ‘rock,’ i recommend many people check this out (especially you chris haha)

any fans, share some love & discussion?
I haven't heard any Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, but I'm a fan of Grinderman. Is there a Nick Cave album I should start with if I wanted to get into him?

oh sweet as. either the good son or let love in are good starting points & will really give you an idea of what this man & his band are all about. each having a good range of musical sounds/styles on them. although if they're hard to find his latest studio double-disk album abattoir blues / the lyre of orpheus is a goodie too, but that one took a while to grow on me though

haha nice, didn't know you were a fan. i figured since there's a few more tom waits fans than i first thought on ap, they'd love these guys. & that's a great album, one of my nick cave favourites
Holy shit. I had no idea about the live album. Thanks man.

Just started getting into them a little while back and I definitely need to listen to more of their catalog, but I've known for a while that I'd probably enjoy them. haha

no worries, good to see some fans. came out in janurary..ish haha can't quite remember now haha. it's a two disk cd album anyway with a two disk dvd, four disks all up, so well worth picking up mate. it takes songs from their last album (as the title would suggest) but includes some real gems of their previous years too

haha yea always the way mate. so much great music, so little time. have you heard their cover of 'black betty'? i love it haha, it's such a different spin on such a classic tune

yea same. glad ya brought that up actually. i don't know what it is about his voice, he doesn't do a lot of fancy stuff a lot of the great singers do (huge power notes, big runs, etc) but he does have a pretty big vocal range in somewhat of a different way & it's a range that can in it's own way cover a great deal of assortment of styles & variety, hard to explain. but ya probably know what i sort of mean if you're a fan (even though my description was all over the show haha)
Sounds pretty awesome. I'm going out of town for the weekend, hopefully I can pick this up before I leave.

Didn't he once do a duet with Shane MacGowan of the Pogues on a cover of "What a Wonderful World?"
If so, then that's the only time Ive ever heard him. If not...then I have yet to hear this guy haha. but if he gets compared to Tom Waits alot, Im definatley interested haha.

yip that's the fella, they also covered dylan's death is not the end together. the good son or let love in are great starter albums i reckon. there's just that fusion of sound & style, good range of percussion, gang vocals & that narrative way of nick cave that i think you'll enjoy. let me know how ya find them (good or bad, each to their own) down the track when ya've checked them out mate

Aight, cool. definatley a very good voice. I'll have to hear their cover of "Deaht Is Not the End" now, too.
So thanks, Ill check out one of those two albums, and let ya know what I think.
Funny thing is though, my friend who got me into Tom Waits, did so by burning me a CD of various Tom Waits songs he'd gotten off the internet, and one of them was that Nick Cave/Shane MacGowan cover. Apparently someone had mistaken Nick for Tom haha. I guess his voice, judging by that song at least, does sound a little "Waits-ish" haha.

no worries, you're the one man i wanted to see this thread haha & that's pretty funny about your mate making that cd. it's not so much his voice that reminds me off waits, it's his style, his narrative & often dark & slighty twisted story telling ways. the bad seeds' are a talented backing band too, which obviously helps haha

haha yea i remember seeing ya online, so i typed up this thread & hit submit 5 minutes later & then noticed ya had gone offline "oh for the love of..." haha. they're another great percussion band (part of what i love about waits' jams). so many different percussion styles are here, some tunes are even hand-clap led, but done so well you forget there simply just hand-claps. this is another band i have to see live sometime

Hahha, "oh for the love of..." haha nice.
thats cool though that theyve got some good percussion, cause Im definatley a fan of bands who do that sort of thing.

drake's a mellow, pretty much always acoustic singer/songwriter from what i've heard. definitely some of the best around if you're into that acoustic/folk sort of thing. if you're checking him out, his early album pink moon is pretty awesome. i love his sort of underlying 'natural elements' theme he has in some of his work. the bloke oozes talent, but i can't think of anyone else i've seen ya talk about to compare him to haha. it is some good stuff though

haha yea same, i'm always checking out new jams, gotta love it. i'm into folk/acoustics too, but there has to be something distinctive about it. so much of it out there is so bland, it's like watching the grass grow during a bloody frost. but yea if you're into that sort of jam, you'll love drake mate
another good one is xavier rudd, his album food in the belly is a favourite of mine in recent years. he's a folk/generally acoustic man, but with soft worldly sounds in there (don't worry it's not over the top, it's predominately folk). he'll be jamming on the acoustic & there'll be some soft ethnic drumming, didgeridoo’s won't go astray from time to time haha. he's a man who can & does play weissenborn slide guitars, 6 & 12 string acoustic/electric guitars, didgeridoos, stomp box, harmonicas, aztec drum, slit drum, djembe, shakers, slide banjo, ankle bells, bass guitar, on his albums. all that & he sings haha, so talented & so mellow, great stuff

new album dig lazarus dig is finally out! thanks to "kid b" for reminding me about this. got it last night & just love it!
this is so good, it's an album i could see having to grow on people who aren't familiar with cave's brilliant back catalogue. however previous fans should latch onto this one no worries
it's almost fundamentally a well crafted folk/rock album. with, as usual, a ton of twists & turns into a number of genres. the garage sound is still there, some of the guitar work sounds like 70s psychedelic at times. music, while in a more subtle way to previous albums, still dangerously dangles between ordered & chaotic, madness & brilliance. driving beats, sleazy bass, fantastic lyrics sung in menacing & poetic ways
this is a real album album though, a great listen all the way through in sequence. strongly recommend this to all!
i only quoted you so ya'd hopefully find this mate haha

that's so awesome! his old stuff is really really good, but quite hard to get into if you're new. when i started with the bad seeds i think i threw myself into let love in & the boatman’s call haha, both great albums however. they're a band that almost defines the phrase "grows on you" haha. on the surface they may seem a little out there, a little different to what most are used to, but once it clicks (which it will) you realize how talented these guys are & also how much melody rings through their sound. not always obvious upon first listens
nick's piano lines in his early material is what i love. often the song will be rocking out with sleazy bass & weird guitar riffs, yet he plays such a dainty little piano line & it really works with the song

i love the new album, it's not my favourite from these guys, but i stopped comparing nick cave to one another a long time ago really. it really clicked, a lot of great songs. "we call upon the author" is a great driving song
Who is this great burdensome slavering dog-thing
That mediocres my every thought?
I feel like a vacuum cleaner – a complete sucker!
It’s fucked up and he is a fucker
But what an enormous and encyclopaedic brain!
I call upon the author to explain
And we call upon the author to explain
Rampant discrimination
Mass poverty, third world debt
Infectious disease, global inequality
And deepening socio-economic divisions
Well, it does in your brain
We call upon the author to explain
Now hang on
My friend Doug is tapping on the window!
Hey Doug, how you been? (hey Doug)
Well, he brings me a book on holocaust poetry – complete with pictures
And then he tells me to get ready for the rain
And we call upon the author to explain
I say
Prolix! Prolix!
Nothing a pair of scissors can’t fix

i still love dig lazarus dig & frequently listen to it. it was always going to be a tough task for cave to follow up abattoir blues/lyre of orpheus though, since it's without doubt one of the best records of this decade. "o children" gets me every time
i really like the closing tracks on dig lazarus dig though, the album is reasonably strong throughout, i just really enjoy the way they close it. "we call upon the author" is still my favourite to sing along with haha

oh it's good to be back, i've been terribly ill of late, in hospital for quite some time. but i'm slowly on the mend. oh wow cool, which song? hmm 3 albums aye
split enz - dizrythmia
tim finn - the conversation (only came out last year, but isn't released in america till this year, get on the board before everyone else! haha)
the finn brothers - everyone is here
the thing with tim's solo albums is that no two are even remotely alike, so if you don't like the gorgeously enchanting chamber folk ways of the conversation, there's 7 other solo albums that sound completely different haha

cheers! wonderful song though, that late 70's period was my favourite era of the enz, such a creative highlight. there's so much more to that band than meets the eye & most people here just don't "get it". the enz were very much a live band, who were respected by underground punk/diy circles to those in the mainstream realm (during the later years), they weren't just a catchy song, they were a musical experience, a journey, with energy like no one had ever seen before. if any of tim's music takes to you, i'll be more than happy to share more & more of the insight into his brilliant mind to help you understand mate. also, i'm someone who's spent thousands of dollars following tim's career & probably almost dedicated just as many hours haha, so it could be said that i have some very very very rare finn material that will never see the light of day, although every now & then i feel like sharing such gifts with others...

I'm not sure honestly haha. Sort of like Tom Waits in that it really depends on my mood, he has so many great albums. I've been really digging No More Shall We Part lately though, perfect for the dreary weather we've been having. What about you?

Yeah it is tough. When I first got the album I listened to Abattoir Blues a lot more, but I love both now. I think it's one of Nick Caves best work.

I like Grinderman okay, but I much prefer Bad Seeds. The lyrics are noticeably poor. It just seems rushed. Hopefully the new one is awesome.

I'd already picked up the two soundtracks when they were released respectively, but double-dipped for White Lunar. They compliment each other well.

My pleasure. I go through Nick Cave fixes. I'll listen heavily for a month at a time, only to put down my Bad Seeds records for a few months, then return back to them and delve into the catalog for another month. I'm currently experiencing a resurgence in interest in Cave's stuff. I think it was spurred on by the fact that I've listened to a lot of Dirty Three recently and I lump Warren Ellis and Nick Cave together even when Ellis is participating in exterior work.
Be sure to post some Callahan/Smog impressions. I'm interested in what you think.

I have no idea if I could be a fan or not! I've never even listened to one song by them. I have decades of music to catch up on, plus the fact that I can get really absorbed with one album for months and not listen to much else. Haha, it's a little saddening what a relatively small amount of music I've heard, but I guess it's alright considering I've only been getting into "good" music the past 2 years. My taste is still rapidly developing.

I've been meaning to get that at some point. Never listened to any of the soundtracks so I thought it'd be a nice way to get acquainted with the work they've done. I've heard a lot of good things.

I've been listening to this quite a bit lately. It's not among my favorite things he's done, but taken for what it is it's a really enjoyable record I think. And you can tell they had a blast recording it.
The new one should be good too, although I'm hoping for a new Bad Seeds album soon after.

The Boatman's Call is magical. And I think you'd really like it, being a lyrics-first person. There aren't a lot of bells and whistles to distract from how good a songwriter he is there.

Haha, doubt it's that common. And that's actually not even my favorite of his. It's just the one I started with and compared to a lot of his other stuff I feel like it's pretty accessible for someone just getting into him. That or Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! .

Yeah, the new Grinderman album is heads and shoulders above the first. So good.
I picked up the Tender Prey remasters and it sounds great. Can't wait to hear The Good Son and Henry's Dream (my favorite album of his).
I also bought The Boys Next Door- Door album... Really weird to hear Cave to sing for something so post punk.

Well, I kept thinking about what the weatherman said. And if the voices of the living can be heard by the dead, well, the day is gonna come when we find out. And in some kind of way I take a little comfort from that now and then.
'Cause people often talk about being scared of change. But for me, I'm more afraid of things staying the same. 'Cause the game is never won by standing in any one place for too long.
