The Junior Varsity – Cinematographic
Release Date: June 19, 2007
Record Label: Victory Records

The Junior Varsity faces one of the more daunting tasks in any bands career, which is the sophomore album. An album that can either make a band or break a band (Finch, I’m looking at you). For the Springfield, Illinois quintet only improve on what they started with 2005’s Wide Eyed. Combined with relentless touring and a dedicated fan base, Wide Eyed had some moderate success. Looking to make a bigger splash this time around with Cinematographic, their second album with Victory Records (Okay, okay, I know this is TJV's third album technically, but work with me here), the boys have added more of a guitar-driven sound to blend with the technical sound Wide Eyed possessed, thus making Cinematographic more well-rounded than its predecessor.

“I Went Blind” kicks off the album with a somber intro and first verse, only to break into a soaring chorus where vocalist Asa Dawson belts it out. “The SKY!” features twisting guitar riffs, which pace the song. Kenny Vasoli joins in vocally on “Wunderdrug,” a light, steady song that displays the fine drumming skills of Chris Birch as the band rocks out in the final minute. “St. Louis” is an upbeat pop ditty showing off the diversity in the band’s sound, while “The Greatest” is a faster, darker song that pummels down on the listener.

The band’s instrumentation is on full display with “The Importance Of Being Important” and “Memory Made Easy.” “Importance” is a sentimental song with fine lyrics as Nick Dodson’s work on the keys is superb. The band’s shining moment occurs on “Memory Made Easy,” which is one the better musical interludes I’ve heard this year. A gorgeous combination of the piano, cello, and guitar, the song’s beauty captures and captivates your ears.

The sharp sounding “Try To Define” follows with one of the catchiest chorus’ on the album. Each instrument is played on spot here, and during the bridge you’ll notice the melody of an old childhood rhyme. The title track is a waltzy jam, with Dodson highlighting the song with his use of the saxophone. “Lungs” is definitely the hardest hitting song on the album, and album closer “Under The Radar” concludes with a menacing undertone and guitars that drive throughout the track.

Before even popping Cinematographic into my CD player, I didn’t have high expectations. I did not enjoy Wide Eyed particularly, because while they did a few cool technical things, I found that album to be a complete drag, as the majority of songs bored me. With Cinematographic, The Junior Varsity have improved on almost all aspects of their sound. The guitars sound bigger, the vocals have improved, and the lyrics are more focused. And while the album is far from perfect (the second half drags a bit, the vocals are still nothing special, and lasting power is an issue), I am pretty impressed with what The Junior Varsity did on their second album. While fans of the first album may take a while to enjoy this effort (as well as hating me for disliking Wide Eyed), Cinematographic has the potential to draw in new fans that did not catch on with the last album. Sophomore slump be damned, The Junior Varsity are here to stay.

The Great Compromise considered an EP/Demo?
I think it was the album they released prior to signing with Victory.

Good review. It took a little bit to get into this album, but I think it's pretty good. I love the song "St. Louis."

I really liked The Great Compromise, but I thought Wide Eyed was weak. This new album is by far my favorite Junior Varsity album. Good Review!

Wide Eyed is one of my favorite albums ever and this one is up to par with it but still has a ways to go before its as good as Wide Eyed. It has however cracked my top 10.

The Great Compromise was released prior to Victory and re-released when on Victory. Therefore, it still be their third LP released under Victory.

It doesn't matter.

Plus, since it's a re-release I wouldn't count it as an actual album-release by the band. It's their second album for Victory. How about that?

I don't think it sounds like Say Anything at all, except maybe some metaphoric lyrics, but thats a stretch.

But they have definitely been strongly influenced by Park, I'm assuming the title Wide Eyed was a reference to Park lyrics.

It's pretty much the same as the re-release, minus the all the bonus songs (last 9 tracks).

The Junior Varsity started in my hometown of Jacksonville, Andy and Nick r from Jville, Chris is from Troy, Asa is from Griggsville, Sergio is from Danville, they live in Springfield now, went to college in Normal, they're record label is in Chicago, they own they're own studio in Springfield, hope that clears up the confusion that they r from 30 towns

maybe I don't get these guys, but everything they've put out is complete shit to me...after the horror that was Wide Eyed, it's not saying much that they've "improved".

I have no idea where you hear say anything rip-off, but that's me.

Personally, I love this album, a lot of great talent shown from everybody in the band, nice and easy vocals with great lyrics. The dynamics of the record, how it can go from something really poppy like "St. Louis" into something a little more heavy for TJV "The Greatest" that has a great jam out at the end. And the title track has a good message. After a few listens, you'll definitely fall in love.

while not as good as Wide Eyed, IMO, this album is really growing on me. I have to go pick up a copy today. I also think there are very few bands out there who deserve support as much as these guys, with all the shit that's happened to them the last few years.

the junior varsity has amazing technical faculties as well as an unconventional style. their most notable improvement in their sophomore album to me would be their transitions between time signatures. completely flawless. listen to "the sky", "cinematographic" and "wunderdrug" and keep track of the time signatures. it's really quite mind-blowing stuff. not as ridiculous as stuff from wide-eyed but more subtle.

their lead guitarist is one of the better ones i've noticed and their drummer can make straight up 4 sound beyond ridiculous. sure, they've taken a step away further with this album, but in many ways, it's a more powerful sound. i'm a fan.

and i'm not sure if someone said this already, but they had a different singer for the great compromise...so in some sense this is their sophomore album...plus, wide eyed was a huge departure from the great compromise.

This has been one of my favorite albums released this year. I never paid all that much attention to The Junior Varsity, but gave this album a spin based on an AllMusic review, and I am definitely glad I did so. These guys are well ahead of the pack as far as the Victory crown goes, and really as far as their style of the genre goes in general. Diversity, intelligence, and energy all all prominent on this album in a cohesive and rewarding way.

(does anyone else besides me think this album is reminiscent of Baysides newer stuff? sorta) this album is really special to to me and so is this band. this is so much more original than any other "pseudo-punk/rock" band out there. while i thought that Wide Eyed was only SLIGHTLY superior (idk why everyone hates that album. its so beautiful both lyrically and technically), this is an unforgettable album. <3TJV
