The Challenger Deep – S/T EP
Record Label: Unsigned
Release Date: May 2007
Who?
The Challenger Deep consists of three dudes playing solid, gritty post-punk. And while nothing bad happens musically, nothing particularly memorable goes on either. I can tell this is just a fling.
How Is It?
The five songs are similar and immediately pleasing. Repetitive, angular riffs and screechy vocals lead each track. The instrumental section that takes place on “3-5-3” shows The Challenger Deep for what they really are: A skilled post-rock band with an odd (mohawked) group of influences. With a few more surprises and stronger vocals, The Challenger Deep could easily get big outside of San Diego. Leaving such a nice city to play in Big Sky, Montana never sounded so exciting.
Recommended If You Like: Dawn Of Man, Drive Like Jehu, shades of gray, Joy Division, the word "fuddled"
