i think i'll go with Plans by Death Cab,

I'd say anything by Bloc Party, Mae, and Anberlin. All of those bands have great lyrics.
Also, although it's been said, Motion City Soundtrack's lyrics are always great. "Everything is alright" is hilarious in its descriptions.
Edit: Dashboard's Dusk and Summer has some great lyrics. Carabba's talk of leaving in "So Long, So Long" is downright gorgeous.

Dead Kennedys - ....pretty much all of them.
Lyrically, it'd have to be one of these albums...
http://www.interpunk.com/itemimages2/96923.jpg
Kid Dynamite - Shorter, Louder, Faster
"You've had a lifetime to find yourself, lose yourself and find yourself again. Paint yourself an excuse and take it for an end. Rate it. Frame it in consistency. Bottomed bottles make jaded fragmented eyes look justified. When you cut your hangups down, be careful you don't dull the knife. You may want to slit the knot of what you're not, sever ties and all you've got".
http://www.interpunk.com/itemimages2/111342.jpg
Bear vs. Shark - 'Terrorhawk'
"These problems I'm having all
Of structure and dreaming of
Of humans and animals and beautiful people
The grass that we nurtured all
When thoughts equal dreams and still
These conflicts directed to the conquering people
To be in a garden with a skyline perverted by
You were my first day, my first day of silence
We're marching a rat race all through the day
Our hands on the home, head for home
The science of driveways to captives"
http://www.interpunk.com/itemimages2/1689.jpg
The Promise Ring - 'Nothing Feels Good'
"Your young English eyes on the highways, climbs and dives, climbs and dives like its alive, And the black in Indiana is leaving for Atlanta. I wonder if shell ever go anywhere, anywhere with me. From the corner of coffee and fever, hazel and curry and your long walking worry. You say it's easier to sleep when the engine beats. And you think I'm not eating. "yeah, what have you been reading?" We talked over Ida and Arkansas like the country whispers to nothing near at all. And they put out the lights and I lit up the crickets. They knew I was taking you out"
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/ca/Shmap1.jpg/200px-Shmap1.jpg
Cap'n Jazz - 'Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards In The Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We've Slipped On and Egg Shells We've Tippy Toed Over'
"Dictioncanary can swear she's barely aware of her apparently paralyzing stares. Let me let go. Let me let go. Angel, i've never seen you. Grapevine twine and loose news noose. Sitting on your driveway. Twisting baited lines to drive me away. Let me let go. You're like a likeable bully. Our favorite, late night desparate phone calls. Sugar, even odd smiles are in this season".
Portraits of Past - 01010101
For gems like these:
"there are a few truths, and here's just one: i'm as fucked up about as much as you're fucked up. but beyond that there are only grasped straws and our own private perceived flaws. where's that gun? we should both use it. doomed from the start. committed to failure. simply mirrors all? rejected selves live to fall. " - Bang Yer Head
"And so my superiority and privilege lies dashed to pieces on the cold, stone floor, mixed with the horrific runoff from what is no longer my freedom my violence my laziness my fucked freedom mine. That freedom which so many love. The freedom I choose to pursue no more. And I see how perverse that freedom is. The fists and blood money stay in my hip pockets. And I show that my hands aren’t inherently violent. And I realize how beautiful these Chinese handcuffs are."- The Control Freak
Plunger's S/T is also a personal favorite.
"We have the sight, insight
Our discerning emotion
Let live your honest intentions
They are not meant to be ignored.
Though, you've been told the lies of another
What good are the arms of your
definition man
When your soul is fading and weak
And though today they smile...
These coercion will surely drain
the peace from your eyes
Look no longer at these they've shown,
These methods and their malfunctions.
We have the sight, insight. "

Taking Back Sunday - Tell All Your Friends

Lyrically it has absolutely no rivals. Even modern lyrical geniuses like Sam Beam and Conor Oberst are totally bowled over imo by that record.
There is just nothing out there that I've heard that is so harrowing and sorrow filled yet beautiful and majestic at the same time. The whole thing is so cryptic and captivating and there is just so much going on in those lyrics that people will probably never get every referenced to everything. For example the "White Roses in her eyes" bit is a reference to Sophie Scholl a Nazi resister and there's just so much going on everywhere that pretty much no other record I've ever heard has touched.
I can tell that just thinking about it gets you excited. It really is one of of the most beautiful albums ever recorded.

All of their lyrics are relevant and so so so amazing.
Not to mention Stephen's voice is haunting.
I said anberlin. Kudos to me.
And, yeah, you can definately see how much they've grown as a band when you do that. It's so hard to believe that a band that released songs like "foriegn languages" can release "*fin"

No, it's just that there's something so sincere in his violent lyrics. He doesn't hold anything back and lets all of his anger flow into the song. It's something that isn't found in music often.

I'm a fan of Box Car Racer's album...
You put it much more eloquently that I could.
Best lyrics on the record?

its great as far as witty/ironic/cheeky pop-punk goes, this is the album that got me started on adding style to my lyrics. admittedly i still write this way for about half of my lyrics as my band is a pop-punk band.
however the four i listed in this thread completely own this album.
The Lawrence Arms - The Greatest Story Ever Told
Saves the Day - Stay What You Are
Alkaline Trio - Goddamnit
Joy Division - Closer

only to someone who just appreciates deep, metaphorical lyrics. i have a real appreciation for those styles but they're not always fitting in the catchiest music, its usually best left to alternative. as far as more catchy lyrics you're looking for something that's witty, sharp, blunt, bitter, ironic etc. in general the lyrics arent necessarily deep but they posess eloquence. albums like deja entendu and tell all your friends have this quality and regardless whether its your own personal preference it's still easily more well written than like, your typical nursery rhyme non-artistic pop lyrics.

Mediocre was never meant to suggest some dreadfully low caliber of lyricism. I agree that Brand New outwrites nearly everyone in the "scene" but those posting about how Deja changed their lives really ought to look elsewhere for lyrically powerful albums. Personally, the contrived, witty one-liners Deja is littered with did absolutely nothing for me. You have admittedly stated that they simply pen catchy, occasionally bitter songs that do not carry much depth. Not what I'm looking for in music but that may just be me.
As for the last portion of your comment, it isn't the most arduous task to surpass the writing found in vapid pop music.

yep and as i said its a matter of personal preference.
i dont see how any album's lyrics could change someone's life though. deja did have a big impact on my tastes in general musically, and as mature, seasoned, deeper pop-punk it served as the transition through which i started to like alternative/indie (keep in mind this album came around when i was 13 and listened only to skater punk and the most energetic pop-punk). but apart from my real appreciation for the lyrics they didn't have any huge impact on my life or anything.

I'd have to agree. "Life-changing" seems to be thrown around far too often when describing albums. Deja marking a shift in one's taste as you alluded to is perfectly understandable but to think that it is lyrically spectacular is a bit of a stretch.

mayday parade ;; a lesson in romantics -- definitely not bad for their first release. i'm anxious to hear more from this sure upcoming and rising band.

I take that as an attempt for thinking of my naivety.
I am aware of such.
But you can't propose that that wasn't their first full length CD release.
And that's what I was referring to.
Notice all of my mentionings are indefinitely full length cds.
I do realize they have an EP, 'Tales Told by Dead Friends,' I own it.
