hmm .. i skimmed it .. all this p2p shit is gay .. which is why i rarely used kazaa and what not in the first place ..
but from what i actually read .. why does it make a difference if i personally rip a song to an mp3 .. or just download it? to me it's the same thing ..

Because in order to rip a song to your hard drive, you need to actually have the cd. The whole thing about downloading is that you are getting the music free.
if i own the CD i have rights to a digital copy of those songs .. how i acquire that copy should be null and void ..

Yes, but you asked what the difference was. The difference is getting a copy of yours or downloading an illegal copy of someone elses. Nobody has the right to download these songs, because they're actually the first owner's property, and right.
By the way, I'm totally for file sharing, even though it doesn't seem that way. I wouldn't know of any of these bands if I didn't download them from Kazaa first.

This is what I do. I download rare or live performances along with the normal ones from albums. If i like the songs, i buy an album(I bought 10 cd's in the last 2 weeks). If i think the songs are complete crap, I think its my god given right not to give them any money. I don't burn any complete cd's off of the internet. But then again maybe that's because of my slow connection, and not because I respect bands ;) .

I do the same thing. Except, I actually do burn the full cd (in the case of AFI's artofdrowning, which i bought 3 months later) like Finch and the Used, basicailly bands that are already quite popular. I end up buying most of them anyway.
