View Full Version : Everything a 16 year old should listen to
My aunt made me a mix CD and told me that it's everything I should be listening to at this age.
Here's the tracklist:
1. The Cure - Boys Don't Cry
2. Trush Hermit - French Hermit
3. Blonde Redhead - This Is Not
4. Death From Above 1979 - Black History Month
5. Deerhoof - Spirit Ditties Of No Tone
6. Wintersleep - Fog
7. Wintersleep - Danse Macabre
8. Attack Mode - Piece Of Shit
9. Drive Like Jehu - Super Unison
10. Drive Like Jehu - Do You Compute
11. Fugazi - Close Captioned
12. Fugazi - Floating Boy
13. North Of America - Keep It On The Download
14. North Of America - Central Part Of Equal Times
15. Nirvana - Marigold
16. Nirvana - Even In His Youth
17. Pavement - Stereo
18. Sonic Youth - Reena
19. Pixies - I Bleed
20. Pixies - Here Comes Your Man
I really, really like it. Every single song is fantastic. For those who are older, what music do you think teenagers should be listening to?

Yeah, she's the man.
You should check out her band, Dog Day (http://www.myspace.com/dogdaytheband).

I probably wouldn't have heard of the majority of these bands if wasn't for her, so I appreciate that she made it. I'm still going to listen to all the bands I knew about before, now I just have a more diverse musical library.

Not new school Pop/Punk I'll tell you that much..
The Smiths, The Cure, Deftones, Weezer, The Afghan Whigs, Deerhoof, Cursive, The Pixies, Modest Mouse, Against Me!, Nirvana, etc.
I am only 19, I am just throwing out bands that either I grew up listening too or are remembered in the past 15 years.

I'm 16, and have only heard of about 15% of the bands on there, hmm, cool, I'll search for the songs around, thanks.

Neutral Milk Hotel, Sufjan Stevens, Jeff Buckley, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Iron & Wine, The Smiths.
That list really lacks depth, man.
Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Bauhaus, Joy Division, New Order, Morrissey, Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, Prince, Underworld, Kraftwerk, Sigur Ros, Daft Punk, Portishead, that's all I can think of right now.

I somehow doubt the initial list was intended to encompass every single artist a 16 year-old should hear or even be extensive for that matter.
With that being said, listening to the music you cited never hurts.
I don't even want to know what my aunt would recommend me. Your aunt is awesome.

She's also only 10 years older than me. Quite a bit younger than my parents and my other aunts and uncles. (And yours, I'm assuming)

Having just been 16 a few months ago, I listen to a lot of:
The Beatles, Bright Eyes, Cursive, Death Cab for Cutie, Eliott Smith, The Good Life, Neutral Milk Hotel, Pavement, Sonic Youth, Stars, and that sort of thing. Indie/emo, whatever.
