Does anyone know what the best place to buy one of these from would be? I'm just looking for the original xbox (not 360) with a pre-installed modchip, that would allow me to copy games to the harddrive, play homebrew, etc.

www.xbox-modchips.com/premodded.htm is the only one I've seen so far with what I want, but I'm sure I could find it cheaper elsewhere. Any help?

Speaking of this, has anyone modded their 360 to good results? And what would be the best way to go about doing it?

i modded my own x box a long time ago (and since sold it) you can get solderless chips, if you have a newer box, and, it really isn;t too bad of a process. i put goldeneye and mario kart 64 on it :)

With the soldered chips though, you can boot games straight from the harddrive. The newer chips let you put in a disc, copy it to the harddrive, take it out, and play it from the harddrive.

Don't the solderless chips require disc swapping and shit?

well, mine had a solderless adapter, yet still had to be soldered because my box was near first gen (didn't have the holes premade in the motherboard. i had to network it to my pc every time i wanted to switch out games and such. i haven't looked much into the new chips so im not too sure if they would require disk swapping or not.

My xbox is modded, I soft-modded it (no chip installed)

How did you go about doing that? Does it let you rip games to the hdd?

Well after that you've still gotta swap out hard drives. Just google "how to soft-mod your xbox" as there are a bunch of different ways to do it...but you're probably going to need a memory card to install the OS on your xbox after you hack in with a save game exploit. I don't rip games to the HD, I download them and transfer them all over via FTP with a crossover cable.

Alright thanks, I'll definitely look into that. Do you think that'd be cheaper/less of a hassle than paying like 160 for a pre-soldered modded xbox?

It depends if you feel comfortable opening your xbox and putting in a new HD. It also depends if you have a memory card and one of the required games to exploit.
