This band is god.

It deserves an official thread, and I apologize if the search function misguided me and there already was a topic.

But really. I never get tired of these guys, never. I plan to cover this band someday.

There is no limit to the greatness exhibited by CJ. A word has yet to be thought of that encompasses how perfect their work is. So no, you can never say Cap'n Jazz fuckin' rules too many times. IF anything, you are not saying it enough

I love Cap'n Jazz just as much as the next person (albeit that person has to have heard of CJ to love them but to my point), that may be borderline strange, possibly stalkerish. If there's a line to cross between fanboy and overly obsessive, then you are straddling it

Fuckmaxbemis
06/26/07, 10:06 PM
Then I'll take overly obsessive. I've always thought of stalking tim kinsella down at one of his bartending jobs and then, you know, talk to him.

Was Joan of Arc any good? I never really checked them out, but I saw them live once and it was pretty cool. Tim wrapped the mic chord around some kid and made him stand in one place.

Fuckmaxbemis

It's hard for me to pick one disc over the other, what makes you go with disc one?

I'd assume it's because disc 1 is actually the newer set of cap'n jazz songs. At one point I did feel the same way though, that disc 1 was where they threw all the good songs and disc 2 was where they put all the songs nobody gave a shit about. Mind you, this is very possible seeing how the track "naive" (one of cap'n jazz's best songs) was omitted from analphabetapolothology as a whole, so to think that whoever put together the the track order was a bit embarrassed by some songs. And not to mention, the disc 2 song set is from older releases and features their live tracks.

After listening to this band for four years and it still being my favorite, the 2nd disc I've learned to appreciate more just because of its more sincere quality, and that's why cap'n jazz is so great, it's not superficial emotional rock. People say always that Cap'n jazz generated all these lighter indie bands coming into the emotional hardcore genre, but I'd really have to blame that on Christie Front Drive and other bands who I feel take more influence from the 90's emo band Gauge than anything. Guage has the most direct sound to the lighter pop punk stuff and to get even more specific, "indie emo" was not at all a product of cap'n jazz, but rather Jawbreaker. Jawbreaker really brought light to bands like Hot Water Music, and if we want to peer back even further, Jimmy Eat Worlds 1994 self titled was pretty "gruff" (as we call it) and plays a role into what I feel "commercialized" emo.

I'd like to think and expand on how I think Cap'n Jazz is not responsible for any sort of "indie emo". Cap'n Jazz was clearly just a good old indie band in my opinion, as if pavement decided to get a little more messy and serious about their music. We can leave the emo title to bands like Mohinder and Knotwork.

What an enjoyable and thought-out post haha. Well, i guess i'd have to give the album as a whole more time then, and then decide which disc i like better.

Interesting commentary on the artists who helped "commercialize" the midwestern indie movement transitioning from real emo into the pop-punk with post-hardcore influence of the early 00's. I think you might be the first person i've seen who says Cap'n Jazz doesn't play a significant role in that. I think i'd have to go back and check out Christie Front Drive and Gauge before i can agree with you, but i see where you're coming from with Jawbreaker and Pavement.

You can't find it for sale or can't find it pirated? If you don't live in total Tardville you'll probably find it at the record store for sale, or check the Jade Tree website. If you are seeking it as booty, just ask any top listener on Last.fm. I'd upload it for you, but I haven't got a computer anymore.

Can we just stop for a second to talk about how in the nice, pretty acoustic version of 'Ooh Do I Love You,' Tim Kinsella goes ahead and says "step on that little fucker's jaw, snap him in half like a wishbone", and how much "lol" and win that is?

Indeed. I would normally say "what a man," but he is in fact not only a great man, but the man.

This family (both literally Kinsella and the folks that were in this band/"family") has shaped the music I listen to in ways that God himself would be hardpressed to comprehend.

Right now I mostly listen to American Football, Joan of Arc, Owen, The Promise Ring, and The One Up Downstairs, for bands that veined from Cap'n Jazz. I've been meaning to listen to Ghosts and Vodka though, same with Make Believe and Owls.

Ghosts and Vodka > Owls >>> Make Believe

just so ya know.

Owls and Make Believe are pretty similar to each other, in that they're both midtempo, sorta meandering, and off time. Owls is more rooted in clean guitar and stuff like that while Make Believe is more distorted and noisy.

I've heard great things about Ghosts and Vodka, just haven't gotten around to listening to them yet. I also had a feeling that make believe and owls would be similar to each other. Owls seems like a band that Tim Kinsella could have easily fit in with another one of his projects.

Old material as in Cap'n Jazz? I remember searching to see if Owen ever played and older songs, but I wasn't successful in finding any. If you or anybody happen to find one though, let me know. I would love to see them. All I could ever find was a few shitty youtube videos of Cap'n Jazz playing live, and that's about it. And to answer your blink-182 question, my ticket was $80, and there are ones that were more expensive. I was willing to pay though, because I never got to see them when I was really into them, and they were a gateway band for me. People seem to pay a lot of money for nostalgic reasons I guess.

This band is god.

It deserves an official thread, and I apologize if the search function misguided me and there already was a topic.

But really. I never get tired of these guys, never. I plan to cover this band someday.

This band is good. You may like the new blog I am working on.

I have so much respect for Cap'n Jazz, especially lyrically. They are my favourite of the Kinsella projects. If anyone needs help with an Analphabetapolothology link...pm me

Favourite lyric(s) people?

I remember her saying, "This whole world is a waste of my time" and all I could say is, "I wish I had something to say..."

Mega bump.

recently surfaced live set from 95, theres a ton of other really great live shows on there too (the Make-Up, MITB, Archers of Loaf, godheadSilo, etc) that the guy is just putting up.
