View Full Version : Sad Times....

Why does no one want to hear about real news? Anyone I've ever talked to about it is tired of hearing about paris, but this is the first time I've ever seen a news anchor do anything about it...

It provides a means of escape and, in the case of Hilton, directs moral outrage at her, rather than the system which empowers her. There are some journalists that will disavow stories like hers, however, so long as the news is placed within the realm where profit is required, all one will have is sensationalism.

What I don't understand is that there really was at one point journalism with integrity. Edward Murrow, etc, what happened to make all that kind of reporting cease? And the money making schemes seem to be failing, as Katie Couric isn't doing anywhere near as well as they thought she would.

I remember first noticing it around blow-job-gate.

I've heard it blamed on Reagan refusing to renew that "fairness of journalism" act or something that made it required to cover a story from all angles, but I'm not sure if thats actually it. I'm not sure if Edward Murrow and his ilk were an anomaly or the norm and what we have now the norm. Because we've had periods of good journalism and really, really bad journalism throughout our whole history. Anyone remember the Spanish-American War and yellow journalism?

That was an era when the news division of a television station was not expected to make profit, only to inform about world events. One saw a distinct change once the news division was expected to earn profit, and was further exacerbated in the advent of the 24-hour news cycle.

I watch Morning Joe every now and then. Joe Scarborough is very conservative but in a tolerable way. Plus, the blonde, Mika, is hot.

That was incredible.
I prefer not to escape reality. I think there are serious issues facing us as a nation that shouldn't be diverted from, especially with a presidential election going on.

BURN, BABY BURN!
I'm so tired of hearing about it. Even now, while I'm writing this, Paris is on my TV. I don't care how many days she's been in jail or how many more days it is until she gets out. She's not the only person to be in jail.
It's sickening how the media would delay news about the war in Iraq to report: OMG, PARIS IS GETTING IN A POLICE CAR!

What happened to Imus was nonsense......but Joe's got a far more entertaining morning show.

im glad she took a stand for what she believes in. unlike many others in the same field, we know that she definitely has a passion for what she does, and is tired of it being tainted by trash like paris hilton.

Their lyrics are ridiculous. It's all just degrading girls, but some of them make me laugh.

If girls today weren't out being promiscuous fucking whores, this probably wouldn't be nearly as big of an issue as it is now.
you are clearly bothered by people degrading girls

You are clearly too worried about my views and opinions; so much as to go to another thread, and copy and paste something I said into a quote.

we're all sitting on the internet man, so making fun of me spending two more seconds to point out a contradiction in your views really doesn't make much sense.

No one ever said I was against female degradation either. In the other thread, I was making the point that it's too common to see them degrade themselves.
No contradictions at all, maybe I just worded my statement wrong.

Promiscuity is not degrading. The view that it is, is derived from the sexual repression of earlier eras.

There have been numerous books on the topic. I recommend reading Michel Foucault's series The History Of Sexuality and The Making Of Fornication by Kathy L. Gaca.

So you're saying that having that view is because of repression of activity? Are you completely voiding the idea of not doing it by choice?

While I do not doubt that some may genuinely hold those beliefs and some may prefer one partner, it is important to recognize that the negative view of promiscuity has its roots in sexual repression, especially for women, since they were meant to be kept second-class citizens. It is acute in American society in particular, because of the history of conservative religious groups that have wielded power.

sorry i thought you were refering to Imus being fired for saying whore. The clip in the original post is from the show that replaced his.

O yea. I knew that clip was from that, but that isn't what I was referring to.
did you say earlier that you don't think he should have been fired?
im not really sure what i think about that, i mean i never thought for a minute that MSNBC would defend him, but as to whether or not he should have been fired. his comments were nothing different than plenty that he made on a daily basis so i dont know.

It stated in his contract that he was suposed to be contriversial and out spoken and that he would be given one warning prior to being fired.
MSNBC caved to self serving race baiters like sharpton when they fired him.
I didn't like Imus or his show but what happened to him was fucked up and MSNBC is certainly going to pay in court.

I'd have to agree
Especially about Sharpton and those like him, ok Jesse Jackson, being self serving. You'll notice that they shut up real quick about the Duke Lacrosse case. You'd think that, being Reverends, they would offer an apology. And btw, Reverends of what?
I wasn't talking to you when I said that.
I know you weren't
