For whatever reason, I've always stayed away from that book. I'm not really sure why, there was just something about it that made me not want to read it. But if it's life changing I might have to rethink my decision.

haha yeah man. I actually saw the movie first, and when I read the book(which was on the beach one summer) I just kept thinking "holy shit, holy shit, this is insane." the part where he takes the cheese and shoves it in the ____ so the rat eats her....that was pretty intense haha.

I'm not really sure what kind of books you would consider "good" but here are some that I think are:
Dry - Augusten Burroughs
Party Monster - James St. James
The Virgin Suicides - Jeffrey Eugenides
Mysterious Skin - Scott Heim
Three of those books have been made into movies, but the books are much, much better.

What's the last book you read for fun? If you don't read for fun, have you read one for school? It doesn't matter if you loved it or hated it, I just want to get a little book discussion going. I'm an English major for a reason. :)
As for me, I just finished reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I really enjoyed it. It was a quick and easy read, and I'm not going to say it was a literary masterpiece, but I'd reccommend it, especially for middle-school or high schoolers.
I also read Hairstyles of the Damned, which was honestly one of the best books I have ever read. I absolutely loved it. It was a lot like The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but I think it was a lot better writing.
Now I'm reading The House of Mirth for a class and I can't say I'm enjoying it. heh.

I'm currently reading Zanesville by Kris Saknussemm...here's the description from the back cover; saying it's weird is an understatement:
Who is Elijah Clearfather? Futuristic bioweapon or good old-fashioned messiah? Reincarnated ex-porn star or mutant information-age revolutionary? The man who awakens in New York City's Central Park with no memory of his identity and the enigmatic message FATHER FORGIVE THEM F carved into the flesh of his back may be all of these things and more. Taken in (and then expelled) by a group of freedom fighters battling the soul-deadening Vitessa Cultporation, Clearfather is a stranger in an even stranger land. Following tantalizing clues that point to the gnomic Stinky Wiggler, and pursued by murderous Vitessa agents, Clearfather embarks on a surreal odyssey of self-discovery across an America that resembles a vast amusement park designed by some unholy trinity of Walt Disney, Hunter S. Thompson, and Hieronymus Bosch. Accompanying Clearfather is an unforgettable cast of characters - including Aretha Nightingale, an ex-football-playing drag queen; Dooley Duck and Ubba Dubba, hologram cartoon characters sprung outrageously to life; and the ethereally beautiful Kokomo, whose past is as much a mystery as Clearfather's own. By turns hilarious and deeply moving, a savage, fiercely intelligent satire that is also a page-turning adventure and a trascendent love story, Zanesville marks the arrival of a brilliant new voice in fiction.

I don't really read much and I feel like I should get back into it again. It's hard for me to enjoy reading because I have to be fully engrossed by the book to really enjoy it. It has to be to the point that I can't put the book down and there are few books that I come across that actually have that power on me. The last books I read and thoroughly enjoyed was the Lord of the Rings series. Before that I read a lot of Michael Crichton. I guess I'm into more science fiction/fantasy sort of stuff, but I'll take anything that really keeps me interested honeslty.
So anyone have some good recommendations?

Adventures of Kavalier and klay. fascinating book. one cousin flees from Nazi prague to america. one is obsessed with Houdini, the other with comic books. together they create a comic book hero. it's got different insights on the society at the time. it actually won the pulitzer. it's incredibly addictive. my only complaint is that it does have some really really big and obscure words.

lately i've read:
Angels & Demons by Dan Brown
The Catcher in the Rye
Angels & Demons is a quick paced book. the action starts like 75 pages in. but it got me riveted(sp?) about 30 in it. its a very quick read. i'll sum it up for you. an ancient Satanic cult resurfaces and plots to blow up the vatican with Anti-matter. its good. trust me.
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is a wonderful book as was mentioned already.
I recommend Hairstyles of the Damned, it's a coming of age story but one of the better books I've read. I also recommend A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith. That book was astoundingly good.
The Fountainhead
The Portrait of the Artist
The Picture of Dorian Game
Enders Game (if you like Science Fiction)
East of Eden

Read Still Life With Woodpecker by Tom Robbins. It is brilliant! Here is a little plot summary from it.
Still Life with Woodpecker is sort of a love story that takes place inside a pack of Camel cigarettes. It reveals the purpose of the moon, explains the difference between criminals and outlaws, examines the conflict between social activism and romantic individualism, and paints a portrait of contemporary society that includes powerful Arabs, exiled royalty, and pregnant cheerleaders. It also deals with the problem of redheads.
It sounds all over the place but the story is a beautiful love story of an unlikely relationship. It is powerful, witty, and all around amazing. Give it a try.

The Joke by Milan Kundera. To (badly) sum it up, it's a story of a man whose life is basically ruined during Communist Czechoslovakia by a simple joke he wrote on a postcard. It's by the same author as The Unbearable Lightness of Being which was suggested earlier. It's really the only book I've had to read for school that I've enjoyed.

the book i'm about to recommend is more of like a social science type commentary on low wage workers. it kind of sounds boring at first, but its definitely a good read if you're interested in minimum wage workers and how they get by and all of that. it follows a woman (Ehrenreich) as she takes on different jobs (maid, waitress, walmart employee) and struggles with having to live meagerly (living in a hotel, sometimes not eating, sometimes walking miles to work, etc). it gives you a new perspective on things. its entited Nickel and Dimed by Barbera Ehrenreich.
another book i enjoyed reading for class was Tales from Ovid, which has to do with a lot of greek mythology. there are short tales that explain the origins of such concepts/words like the spider web and narcissism.

French Lieutenant's Woman. I'm reading it for English atm. It's a victorian novel about a guy who is engaged and then falls in love with a woman who is basically socially shunned in the first place, so he's got a huge dillemma. Really good. I love John Fowles's writing style as well, at times I think he couldn't describe any better than he does.

it's about a boy who writes these letters to a person that remains anonymous to the reader, he talks about learning how to masturbate, falling in love, losing a friend who killed himself, losing an aunt in a car accident i believe, and he makes friends who teach him how to open up and take risks.

like in Crash at the beginning: "We're all just trying to crash into each other" (so profund!!)

Pretty self explanitory. People can come here to hear opinions on books that people have just finished. I'm not talking pages and pages for a review, just author, book name, a sentence or two for the review and a rating out of ten.
The Dead Zone - Stephen King
Overall, this was a pretty average book, a lot of parts did not make sense and seemed pointless in context with the book. Parts where main character Johnny gets injured and then has visions of the future impress however. A pretty ordinary book in all though.

The DaVinci Code
8.5 / 10
-the history you can learn from this book is very interesting
-annoying end of chapter cliche as a cheap way to create suspense
-a little overhyped
-a ton better than the movie
A thin place.
I'm not going to rate it, because i didn't finish it. I didn't like it as far as i got though, it moves too slow and the author tries way to hard for imagery.
i'm reading haunted. i'm not a huge fan of the format of it, but the characters are starting to gain some development. I just somewhat find myself zoning during the theater sequences and wanting to read the stories.
So far, probably my least fav Palahniuk book (Diary,Survivor,Choke,Fight Club I've read, Lullaby is next) and the stories are extremely fucked up.
The Great Gastby
good stuff, deep meaning.

I'm reading A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.... and it's boring the hell out of me.

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
This is a really, really imaginative story about a girl who eventually grows to become a geisha in Japan. You see her really from the beginning of her life (A girl of maybe 8?) to when she grows old. I really enjoyed it.

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
The story of a girl with a secret growing up in highschool. It's very cliche, and predictable, but still a somewhat enjoyable read. It's real simple and easy to read, and you can fly through it.

I am reading Skeleton Crew by Steven King atm, I have never been majorly impressed with this guy before but now, but it's a collection of his stories. The first was...
The Mist
Relatively poor and unimaginative storyline, but written OK. 6/10
The next short story is The Monkey, which is shaping up to be quite good, maybe a 7.

Killing Yourself to Live by Chuck Klosterman
10/10
I've never read a book so fast in my life. I love Chuck. He's almost too interesting.
