1984 - George Orwell. This book will never become irrelevent as long as governments exist.

It // Stephen KingKing is the man - I hope I get to shake his hand sometime before I die. It was great (the different perspectives of the main character was a nice method), and The Turtle was such a cool mysterious character.

My favorite books list would be miles long... I love to read.

I guess the book that affected me the most in recent years, which struck me in a personal way, was (soooo cliche) Catcher in the Rye. But man, the list goes on. :book:

i bought that book in december and read it in 2 days. it was creepy, they should make you read that book for school just to creep you out, it'll work better than almost any video will.

it is a book about this girls life after meth(a life that gets started after meeting her dad for the first time in years). it is sort of about the authors daughter.

The Dead Fathers Club by Matt Haig

Do you like punctuation? Grammar? If anything grammatically incorrect makes you quesy this book will kill you. There is relatively no punctuation in this book. Periods mark the ends of most sentences, but that is about the only structure the book has. It's daring, but it works. There is a reason for this technique (it just takes a hundred or so pages for it to reveal itself).

The plot of this interesting story is reminiscent of a certain Shakespeare play, but it is it's own story with it's own twists and turns. The basics: Phillip, a twelve year old British boy, sees his fathers ghost at his funeral. His fathers ghost tells him about the Dead Fathers club and the circumstances surrounding his death. He gives Phillip a task: To kill his uncle, Alan. The story unfolds around this impossible task, the difficulties Phillip faces in his everyday life, and his relationships with his mother, uncle, the children at school, and Leah, the daughter of his uncles business partner.

If you can survive the absence of punctuation, and not get lost in the conversations, this book will amaze you.

Yes, Chuck Palahniuk is that good.

I absolutely love A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. It's hysterical. I've never recommeded it to anyone who didn't love it.

The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster is another favorite of mine. There is also a graphic novel for City of Glass, one of the stories in the trilogy, that is absolutely amazing.

I have read 222 pages of the 412 pages of Chuck Palahniuk's "Haunted", and have to say I really don't get why people seem to dislike it so much.

Some of these short stories are more inventive and thought provoking than entire books I have read (namely 'The Nightmare Box', 'Swan Song' and 'Foot Work').

"Guts" is the most famous story of them all, although I think it is weak when compared to some of the others. It relies too much on shock than story, and although it creeped me out and made me feel physically uncomfortable, there are many other stories at this point that are much better.

i think people dislike it so much because the story connecting the shorts is so weak. i think it would've been ALOT better had it just been a straight collection of short stories.

Yeah I can see that.

It is interesting learning the reasoning behind their names and such though, but alot of it is taken far too far (the whole self mutilation thing that has been going on so far in the story is dumb as hell).

It does work quite well as a metaphor for the rediculous nature of reality tv, but so far there is only one character who isn't pretty much unlikeable (and that is the one who all the other characters call 'the villian', Mrs Clark)

i just finished God bless you, mr. rosewater by Kurt Vonnegut on friday and On the Road - by Jack Kerouac last night and i just started Ape and Essence by Aldous Huxley yesterday.

God bless... is seriously amazing. In my opinion it is KV's quintessential humanist work, the culmination of the book with Kilgore Trout is phenomenal. So i highly recommend it.

On the Road was pretty amazing as well and it's easy to see how it defined the Beat generation. It really helps personify the hedonistic tendencies of the individuals at the time. I honestly think that part 4 of the book, when they are in mexico in particular, is one of the best pieces of literature i have ever read. The way Kerouac makes his words flow and his particular style of storytelling really reaches it's climax here. It's simply amazing and beautiful all at once.

I've only just begun ape and essence, but so far it's really interesting. The fact that what you are reading is a movie script makes it unique in itself. Another Huxley tale of a dystopian future...you can count me in.

Factotum - Charles Bukowski.

what should i read when i finish it>

Woke up this morning and it seemed to me,
that every night turns out to be
A little more like Bukowski.
And yeah, I know he's a pretty good read.
But God who'd wanna be?
God who'd wanna be such an asshole?
God who'd wanna be?
God who'd wanna be such an asshole?

Well we sat on the edge of the river,
the crowd screamed, "Sacrifice the liver!"
If God takes life, he's an Indian giver.
So tell me now why, you'll tell me never.
Who would wanna be?
Who would wanna be such a control freak?
Well who would wanna be?
Who would wanna be such a control freak?

Well see what you wanna see. You should see it all.
Well take what you want from me. You deserve it all.
Nine times out of ten our hearts just get dissolved.
Well I want a better place or just a better way to fall.

But one time out of ten, everything is perfect for us all.
Well I want a better place or just a better way to fall.
Here we go!

If God controls the land and disease,
keeps a watchful eye on me,
If he's really so damn mighty,
my problem is I can't see,
well who would wanna be?
Who would wanna be such a control freak?
Well who would wanna be?
Who would wanna be such a control freak?

Evil home stereo, what good songs do you know?
Evil me, oh yeah I know, what good curves can you throw?

Well all that icing and all that cake,
I can't make it to your wedding, but I'm sure I'll be at your wake.
You were talk, talk, talk, talkin' in circles that day,
when you get to the point make sure that I'm still awake, OK?

Went to bed and didn't see
why every day turns out to be
a little bit more like Bukowski.
And yeah, I know he's a pretty good read.
But God who'd wanna be?
God who'd wanna be such an asshole?

Anyway, I'm reading a novel called A&R. I picked it up at this thing in Baltimore called The Book Thing. It's a big warehouse where people donate books. You just take as many as you want, everything is free, and categorized like a book store. It's incredible. Last time I walked away with 16 books.

i think people dislike it so much because the story connecting the shorts is so weak. i think it would've been ALOT better had it just been a straight collection of short stories.

I thought the main story was so boring I couldn't even get through the entire book. I just kept trying and couldn't do it.

I'm currently reading Nine Stories by J.D. Salinger, and thoroughly enjoying it/them.

i read about half of the main story, then got so disgusted (And it takes ALOT to disgust me) and annoyed that i just skipped around and just read all the short stories. i really like the one, i cant remember exactly what it was about, but it involved faking injuries to get insurance money.

Oh, and I'm planning on reading some Dave Eggars in the future, as I never have, and if the constant praise for him on this site is any evidence, he's pretty damn good, apparently. Anybody reccomend any one of his in particular?

Okay, so yeah, it's pretty rare when such a thing happens, but there have been times. For me, I'd say that the Shawshank Redemption and Jurassic Park were two films that I thought were better than the books they were based on. Okay, so SR was based on a novella, but whatever...
So, if there's any movies you feel are better than the books/novellas they're based on, go ahead and discuss. And while you're at it, feel free to list what you feel was the worst film adapted from a book you've ever seen. I'd say that the TV-movie It was pretty bad. I loved the King novel, but the movie...ehhh...haha yeah. Soooo....go ahead.

Wow, really? Haha cool. Jurassic Park...it's like...the novel is so different from the film haha. The two endings are so different it's almost unbelievable haha. And the characters are all described pretty differently in the book, and then certain people die in the book that live in the movie...I just liked the movie much, much more. Plus, it's one of those things that is so much cooler visually, then just painting a picture in your head, you know?
Plus Jeff Goldblum totally makes the character of Ian Malcolm his own haha.

Eh, yeah...I dunno. I grew up with the movie, and have always loved it, and just a while ago read the novel for the first time. So maybe I'm a bit biased. At first I was a little bit upset that they killed Malcolm in the book, but I just started reading the novel of "the Lost World" and apparently he was only slightly dead haha. So yeah...but anyway the book still is really good, one of Crichton's best.

Shawshank without question haha. I loved the novella, but the movie blew me away. I love how they managed to change some things around and by doing so somehow made it better. IE, in the movie, Andy never has a cellmate, which I like, plus I love that they really expanded the character of Brooks in the movie. One of my favorites ever, no doubt.

FINALLY finishing the Dark Tower series. It's taken me so long to actually get back on it. I took a break after the 4th book because I had to read something non-stephen king for a little bit.

Ha, I'm in the same position. Just got the last book to do. I seriously need a break from King.

"On The Beach" by Nevil Shute.

It's a post-nuclear war book written in the late 1950's... basically the whole world is dead 'cept for people in South America and Australia and they know when roughly they'll die. Interesting read, but it's amazing the advances in science/information we have today compared to what they had back then.

Just finished:

Fences - August Wilson
Twisted - Laurie Halse Anderson
Valiant - Holly Black
Ptolemy's Gate - Jonathan Stroud

I like to read?
