I'm currently in the middle of Player Piano by Vonnegut and 1984 by Orwell. As soon as I finish with both of them I'm gonna start Slapstick, another one by Vonnegut. Yes, I love satire. I've also heard wonderful things of the Da Vinci Code and I really want to get into Jack Grisham. So what are all you guys reading?

right now I'm in the middle of two books:

Dante's Paradiso

and

"The Ends of the Earth: A Journey to the Frontiers of Anarchy" by Robert Kaplan.

I really like the second one a lot. Dante is alright, but I preferred the Inferno and Purgatorio.

I started reading atlas shrugged but couldn't finish it. I guess its due to my short attention span. I just didn't understand where she was going with it. maybe I should pick it up again. The Da Vinci Code was pretty good. I liked when they explained where all our symbols come from.

I'm reading Talon by Charles Romalotti, his books are so fucking awesome.. If you like real life type stories then you'll like his book Salad Days and if you like dark horror type books then you'll like Rash. After I finish Talon I'm planning on reading either The Rules of Attraction or American Psycho by Bret Easton-Ellis

And by the way, isnt it John Grisham, not Jack Grisham?

The Truth Machine by James L. Halperin

It's about the future where this guy makes a machine that detects lies with 100% accuracy. They use the machine to solve court cases....so people who are found to be guilt from the machine are executed immediately after the trial. BUT he commits a crime...so he has to hide his secret from his own machine.

I have ADD so reading isn't easy for me, unless it's poetry. I have a book of poetry by Robert Frost I hold pretty close, I like old fashioned poetry and I'm considering buying Revolution On Canvas though I doubt Ken from the Starting Line will have anything worthy of being revolutionary. A book I read in school that I enjoyed was Fahrenheir 451, I do admit it gets annoying at times, but it's very clear the entire story is a satire of technology.

A book I read a long long time ago as a kid just to scare myself was Firestarter by Stephen King. To this day, whenever I hear of or see the book I can just illustrate images in my head that used to terrify me.

Well, I'm not a huge fan of Steven King but his gigantic series "The Dark Tower" is super philosophical in hindsight. It can be a fantasy novel, or a deep thinker. It all depends how you read it. Also Anthem by Ayn Rand. Last but not least, if you can handle the language, The Republic by Plato or Utopia by Sir Thomas More.

Stranger in A Strange Land- Robert Heinlein- this book is excellent, more or less about the human capacity/need to love and to laugh. It's really insightful, when it was originally published, there was a lot of shit about how the main character is paralleled to Jesus, and seen as almost a satire of Jesus's life. I highly recommend it.

Candide- Voltaire (absolutely hysterical satire if you want to read between the lines)

I really love(d) Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. The Crimson Petal and the White by Michael Faber is pretty good... it's about a 19th century prostitute in London, so it's this mixture of sex, history, and just really good writing. Hard to explain, but I loved it. If you want something satirical Catch-22 by Joseph Heller is good.

ishmael and the story of b by daniel quinn are pretty good
the dark tower series by stephen king is really 7 books but it's so epic and covers so many topics and genres you'll end up thinking about something.
the 48 laws of power by robert greene will make you think (whether it makes you despise how things work or not is up to you i guess)
anything by palahniuk is good, don't know if they really make you think alot but they sure are funny.
i'm also partial to calvin and hobbes and the farside comics but i don't know if they count.

Synopsis:
Its been nearly twenty years since the small town of Henrico Falls was rocked by the bizarre murders of those six very successful women. After years of trying to track down the killer with no positive results, the department officially closes the case. However, Detective Michael Kirk never gave up despite being told over and over by his captain that there was nothing that could be done.
Christie Porter's mother died in a horrific car accident when she was five years old leaving her father, Jack Porter to raiser her alone. Twenty years later, the newly promoted police detective is still having recurring nightmares about her mother's accident.
After a long span of silence and peace, another bizarre murder occurs. This time the killer known only as Mr. Brightside is targeting the new detective and her closest friends and loved ones. Detective Kirk has no doubt that this is the same serial killer who murdered those women twenty years ago.
With her life on the line, Christie and Kirk must delve into the past to find out the chilling truth about Mr. Brightside that will make Christie forget everything she knows about her past. EVERYTHING

Add in: I wrote this 4 years ago and I know I am going to have to change the killer's name so the killers don't sue me :headshake

Good luck! Its a very grueling task...I had to get some other things published first (i.e. short stories in highlights for children) before a publisher would even take me seriously enough to request my manuscript. I wrotoe this book when I was 17 but re-polished it quite a bit since then...

Since you're so young, you're probably out of luck. Not only would a publishing company not take you seriously, but your skills probably aren't as good as they may seem, and publishing companies will pick that up. It takes years before you develop a total grasp on the language, its quirks, and how to develop a strong style.

However, if you believe you're a young Hemingway, then pick up a copy of the Writer's Market... I have the Canadian Edition, it tells you lots of different publishing house's addresses, what they like to publish, etc. It's a good guide.

Exactly...I published some short stories when I was 18 but most publishers won't take you seriously until you have a few things under your belt. Darren is absolutely right....It just so happened that my query letter described what they were looking for in a book...originality...anyways the editors are making a run on it and then I should have a hard copy in about another month :)

i went to barnes & noble about a week or 2 ago and found this book its really good.

its called Snow Mountain Passage, by James Houston

its about the Donner Party and if you dont know what that is its a bunch of people that were forced to canniblism in the late 1800s. its true and its a good book so if your into like thriller/western frontier type books check it out.

"Still Life with Woodpecker is sort of a love story that takes place inside a pack of Camel cigarettes. It reveals the purpose of the moon, explains the difference between criminals and outlaws, examines the conflict between social activism and romantic individualism, and paints a portrait of contemporary society that includes powerful Arabs, exiled royalty, and pregnant cheerleaders. It also deals with the problem of redheads."

The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks

Hmm, that's the only one that is seeming interesting to me so far, I might have to check it out. Thanks for all the replies, keep them coming!

I'm planning on buying Final Truth (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0963242202/qid=1130607845/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-5414828-6320643?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) and one or two others. The Wasp Factory sounds promising...

another good book by Golding is The Inheritors. it's basically a historical ficiton account about Neanderthals fighting against the arrival of Homo sapiens. but it's good. and yeah, there's plenty of dialogue

there's another one about a man strnaded on a barren rock island but i forget the title.

The Wasp Factory is good, very, VERY dark. I recommend starting with that book, and if you like that style, reading more books by Banks. I think Complicity is a better book overall, in terms of writing and plot, but The Wasp Factory is proably a better startoff.

no shit. And the "Adventures of Huck Finn" is about a boy named Huck Finn who has adventures. Thank you for pointing out nothing.

A million little pieces. It's on Oprah's book list, but I really liked it. About drug addiction.
