I've been a Reds fan my whole life (why? I don't know), and I have to say that this guy is amazing. After hearing his story (with the drug addictions, etc.), well it just makes you WANT him to do good things. But even without the background info., he's unbelievable on the field.

Anyone agree?

He's having a helluva year and what he's been through is pretty insane. I hope he does good, he's got a good shot at ROY but I'm still pulling for my boy Braun who's had a killer first half after being up for only a month or two.

Braun has played about a month less and is putting up similar numbers.

Braun has played about a month less and is putting up similar numbers.

Pence isn't a power hitter. also, his average is going to be comparable becuase he has about 100 less ABs than Pence. his play in the field has also been pretty bad.

the Braun/Pence debate has already been done. however, Pence > Hamilton.

Pence: 279 AB, .342/.367/.589, 11 HR, 42 RBI, 59 RC (8.38/27), 50 SO, 10 BB.

Hamilton: 208 AB, .279/.371/.543, 14 HR, 30 RBI, 41 RC (7.05/27), 52 SO, 28 BB

the only thing that Hamilton really beats him in is walk totals but their similar OBPs, and Pence's lower strikeout total, really washes that argument out.

i'm not debating that pence is having a better year this year, not at all. but i think hamilton will be a better professional. there's a lot of things that have messed with him this year (being on the reds will do that). he's had to bat lead off some even, which is clearly not where he would like to hit. i think in the end, hamilton will be better. i've seen kids put him numbers for a while like pence has (chris shelton? clint barmes?) and i don't know that he'll stand up. but i absolutely believe hamilton will.

His defense hasn't really been that bad, he's had 8 errors... and comparing defense of an infielder to an outfielder is ridiculous (Pence has 2). As in infielder you have alot more chance to make an error than an outfielder... playing the outfield is rather easy. Also talking ROY, Braun has put up similar RBI numbers and the same number of HR's in a month less... I'm not really sure how you talk about Pence being better than Braun at this point with Braun almost mimicking his numbers in 100+ less AB's. Let's also not forget that Braun has come up on a team that is in first place and was stuck in the 3 hole right away, where as Pence came up a month into the season after the Astros have already lost plenty of games and were far behind in the division and wasn't expected to contribute right away. It could really go either way, but Braun has done better than Pence in my opinion.

I mean I'm not saying it's ridiculously hard, but saying that it's "rather easy" is stupid. It's just as tough as the infield.

Pence will, too. he may not look too pretty doing what he does but i really do think this kid's gonna be a star. Barmes is a weird case since he got hurt. also, Shelton was a flash in the pan and didn't do what Pence has done for as long as Pence has so far. Pence is also hitting in one of the worst lineups in the league so he's not exactly in an ideal spot for production.

also, the argument could be made that, despite very similar defensive numbers (using only CF--Hamilton: 5 A, 2 E (49 games) Pence: 5 A, 2 E) the argument could be made that Pence is the better fielder since he's playing in a much bigger CF than Hamilton.

He's dealing with Tal's Hill every home game, where as Hamilton is playing in slightly easier outfield. Center field is about 40 feet smaller in the Great American Ballpark and he doesn't have the hill to compete with every game.

Ok, I guess saying it's easy is not the right thing... it's just that playing infield in the majors is harder than playing the outfield, you have to be a way better athlete to be a corner infielder in the majors.

I still think Braun has played better than Pence. I guess the rest of you don't, but that's nothing new since the Brewers never get any respect. Braun is a better pure hitter than Pence, and he can hit for power to all fields... and he's 23.

no, i think braun has a slight edge right now and if the season ended now and it was up to me, i'd give him the award with pence a very close second...but we're only halfway through the season, so anything can happen.

i don't honestly know about pence, but i know that hamilton has one of the best guns in the game. he has a ridiculous, ridiculous arm. and barmes and shelton were just two guys that came into my mind from last year. this is really just a matter of opinion, and i don't know that pence will be consistently great.

He's dealing with Tal's Hill every home game, where as Hamilton is playing in slightly easier outfield. Center field is about 40 feet smaller in the Great American Ballpark and he doesn't have the hill to compete with every game.

being ignorant of this also, how often does he really have to make a play on tal's hill? i can't imagine it being a whole lot.

being ignorant of this also, how often does he really have to make a play on tal's hill? i can't imagine it being a whole lot.The fact that it's there poses a problem. He's made several plays this year on it, including a #1 web gem where he climbed up to the very top and made it standing up next to the pole.

It's pretty much not important, but it still poses a threat and it's a much bigger outfield than Cincinnati's.

that was a fantastic catch and i'm really disappointed that it's gonna get overshadowed by beltran's catch out there.
