Who watched? Thoughts?

I thought Jacobs call with only a pair of 4s was questionable. But damn that guy is a sick poker player.

did you guys watch the main event last year? you know that crazy dude, eric molina? he goes (went) to my school haha ive met him and played in games with him a few times

i think he came in 31st last year

Broken Parachute
07/11/07, 09:06 PM
hahaha Molina got tossed from a table in last year's WSOP because he said like "fuck you" to Jamie Gold, because Gold called his bluff and started ranking him out to get on his nerves...so he got a penalty for cursing and had to leave the table for a little while.

haha yep...dude is a total douchebag

Broken Parachute
07/11/07, 09:17 PM
That's why I love Jamie Gold. He pushes the right buttons all the time. He saw Molina was mad and immediately he started making fun of him hahaha

On the other hand he can be an arrogant prick.

I like Allen Cunningham and Paul Wasicka.

the guy that won this is a complete sicko, billirakis...he's mrsmokey1 online. he's been ranked forever and it's great to see him win his first bracelet.

brokendown, i think you're talking about david benyamine, he's french though.

Well anyone winning these big field tournaments are incredibly lucky. Raymer was extremely lucky in virtually every single race situation when he won it all. It's a good amount of skill but in that sized field it's definitely a lot of luck to have things hold up when they should, or draw out on people.

nah thats not the dude

the dude im thinking of is black i think? hes like really tall and always wears a skullcap

I remember when Gold called on someone's all in (and they didn't have too much less than him) and the only way he could win was if one of two cards came out, and he won it. It was right there I knew he was going to win because nothing was going wrong for him at all.

the thing about gold was that we didn't see 70% of the hands because they weren't interesting enough for the telecast. he was playing every single hand, and did a great job of disguising his image - at least from what i saw of the final table ppv.

brokendown, jean-robert bellande. he's alright, more of a personality than a player though.

i remember they had one of his backstories, where he was in a limo partying with hot chicks. he's definitely a cool guy.

Definitely. I'd like to get the ppv final table this year, but I'd get too bored after a while. I like poker a lot and watching it (in terms of the televised stuff, I much prefer watching the high stakes poker on the game show network over the tournament poker. much more poker being played there then some goons that got in the main event on a satellite berating people who play just as bad as them) but I'd eventually get bored and then forget to go back to it after a while.

He had the chips to play nearly every hand if he wanted to and though his table talk probably crossed the line a lot of times in terms of blatently telling his hand and what not, it was very unique and I think just messed with everyone's heads. He was insanely lucky, but from what I saw in the little of him on the USPC telecast a couple months ago he's a good player. Is he one of the best in the world? Don't know, but he's above average.

i don't even know if he's above average to be honest. i mean he did a great job in the wsop, but in high stakes poker he was repeatedly owned.

bigmike
07/11/07, 11:34 PM
I haven't seen him in the high stakes poker. But, take into context who he'd be up against in a setting like that. You can be an above average player and get smoked in a high stakes setting with the worlds best.

nah i know, i just meant in terms of his plays. when he's deep stacked and has to make moves postflop, he gets owned because he misses value and calls down too light. in tourneys, even if you're deepstacked chances are your opponents are not, and that creates additional bigstack leverage not usually offered in a cash game.

bigmike
07/11/07, 11:38 PM
Oh for sure. He's definitely better suited for a tournament style and a deep stack.

There's a huge difference between players I like to watch and players I like and would want to win. Matusow is the biggest db ever but you can't hate the hilarity that ensues when he's at a table. Did anyone see the poker after dark with him and Hellmuth? Shit was hilarious. Think Annie Duke was on that one too. I like to see people like Negreanu, Cunningham, and Laak win. Cause they're funny but not assholes.

bigmike
07/12/07, 01:07 PM
I love watching Matusow and Hellmuth play. Antics aside, I think Hellmuth is one of the best players to watch. It's unreal some of the lay downs he can make pre-flop/post-flop and/or get out of the hand losing the least amount of money he could.

jaimej
07/12/07, 01:18 PM
Totally agree with you, he's great to watch, but he's such an arrogant prick that it makes me HATE when he wins!

Hahaha, for sure. I can see why people would hate hellmuth or matusow, but I love watching them both play. If i were as good as either of them, I'd be an arrogant prick, too.

theres that one arrogant guy who got pretty far in last year's main event. i think his name was dmitri nobles. he was just lcuky. he made terrible calls and reads, and he got rewarded for it. well the in the beginning anyways. i hate people like him, but yeah people like hellmuth and matusow can be as arrogant as they want to be

hellmuth gets owned in cash games. the best players in the world are esfandiari, patrick antonious, barry greenstein, doyle brunson, brian townsend, and durrr (his online name, i dont know his real name). there are some others but hellmuth is definitely not one of them. but all of those guys are great in both cash games and tourneys.

now when it comes to nlhe tournaments, hellmuth is up there in the best of all time. i usually dismiss tournament players, though, because it takes a lot more skill to beat cash games than it does tourneys.

He dominates in cash games and is impressively consistent in all of the games, not just hold em.

Negreanu is easily the best reader in the world though and one of the most entertaining as well.
