Basically in this thread I pose the question: what is good music? What do you look for in a song or a band or cd or whatever, that tells you it's good?
It drastically depends on your musical tastes for one.

Of course, of course. I'm not suggesting there is a certain good or bad music, I'm just curious as to how people, mainly people who listen to the kind of music promoted by this site, determine good music. It's something i find very interesting, because music is something that is very personal to everyone.
So yeah, i'm not trying to start a debate, only just sampling opinion.
EDIT:
anything thats easy to skank to.
that made me laugh! If i could +rep you, I would, but strangely this forum doesn't have a karma system.

I want something that is unlike other music i have heard. It can be of any style but if it involves vocal it needs to have strong lyrics, generally i like it to be complex with a lot going on (that doesn't mean mindless soloing) and lots of thought put in. Singing can be of any style and i also like plenty instrumental music.

i don't really care about the lyrics, but music has to be..umm. good.

What's your opinion on The Dear Hunter then? Since I would say it fits your description of what you like, Ben. And I've never heard you comment on them before.
I like all kinds of genres so I usually look for a) bands that are unusually good at doing what everyone is doing or b) bands doing something unique. Or sometimes i just want a mediocre record to rock out to and now have to think about. haha. I have been really into progressive metal and instrumental stuff lately. and also into buying old albums i should have bought a long time ago. it's kind of tricky to define "good music" all at once. you can usually know it when you hear it.

My music first of all, has to have some emotion in it. Real emotion. Make a statement and MEAN it. The band has to write its own lyrics, and own music with few exceptions (covers, for example). They have to have a good ethos themselves. They have to play good music, most off all, but they have to also have their own sound.

Agreed. That's pretty much my taste right there. Although I also need it to be fairly catchy. I'm a sucker for catchy music.

It's an entirely subjective concept but I'd say "good music" would be when a band can summarize what would take me pages to describe in one turn of phrase or moment in a song. "Good music" has to evoke thoughts that I wouldn't usually be able to formulate myself, whether they're conjured by the music or lyrics.

It has to make me feel... something.
Whether it be emotional identification lyrically and/or musically, or it just makes me want to dance and sing.

definitely, one of my favorite bands just sobs to the beat of blastbeats and br00tal guitar riffs. When the breakdown rolls around the singer kicks in with the heavy crying and occasionally screams his dad's name
Plus it makes for siqqq live shows

Make Noise Not Music.
I love music that makes me think, that puts me in a good place regardless of what the genre is. I love amazing lyrics, philosophical lyrics that aren't cliche. I love airy, mystical, mellow music. Depending on my mood, I also want catchy, upbeat music that I can jam to when I feel like it. It's hard to be specific because I love all different kinds of music.

i really enjoy music that has passion, and very strong lyrics to go with that passion, i like all types and genres of music, so that doesn't matter too much, but they have to have talent of coarse, and if there catchy ill listen as well.

i like music w/ good lyrics espically if its rap. rap w/ bad lyrics is awful. so basically radio rap is awful. i like it when songs tell a story. those are pretty cool. like the tide by the spill canvas or deathbed by relient k. i like most acoustic songs. and i like may cover songs. i like bein able to here both versions. i will ussually look at music people reccomend me. unless they have recomended alot and i didnt like it. then i would be more hesitent. music i hear live i ussually like afterwards. at least a song or two.

Lyrically, i love when an artist can take something that i can't relate to on the surface, yet you are easily able to relate to it on a different level. I also enjoy a good story teller, but that usually intertwines with what i first said.

I hate it when I just downloaded or bought something new and it sounds so familar like I've heard it before even though I definitley havent. Good music IMO is something that steps outside the box and outside the norm where you can still feel where the influence came from but its still has its own extra something to it. Also nothing is better than good lyrics ecspecially when you can relate to it own your own level.

i look for something that i can relate to and understand. also, it helps if the music itself, not the lyrics, is easy to listen to. i greatly enjoy being able to listen to just the music sometimes and tune out the lyrics and vise versa (sp?).
p.s.-by saying that "good music is an opinion," is really just outlining what the creator of this thread is looking for. he WANTS your opinion...duh.
