My argument was which band was more talented, not who you enjoy more. But, Modest Mouse gets my pick for both. Much more talented, and I like them much more.

Brand New.
While I think Modest Mouse have created 2 very very good albums (The Moon and Antarctica and The Lonesome Crowded West), I think their best work is behind them. When I look at Brand New, I see the band evolving...better and better with each release. What could come next from them truely excites me. Also, Brock's vocals tend to wear on me after awhile.

Quality:
vocals - Although, i do enjoy the stylistic spin modest mouse throws out, i don't think anyone could argue that brand new doesn't have better vocals.
instrumentation - hands down modest mouse.
Originality:
This is really hard, both bands have a very original over-all discography, but just for YFW, I'd say Modest Mouse
Progression:
I honestly don't think many bands out there can touch Brand New in there progression from album to album.
Over-all:
Definitely Brand New.

modest mouse by a long long shot for me (& i'm not a huge fan to begin with). this is ap, so the winner was unfortunately obvious long before this poll came about. i'd like to see how the results would sit outside of the ap environment though

1. I disagree. I happen to dislike Jesse Lacey's voice very much, and he's a pretty bad vocalist.
3. Considering Brand New to be more original than Modest Mouse is hilarious.
4. Brand New has progressed, true, but they still haven't created an album that's on the level The Moon, and aren't anywhere close.

A good show by both. The other chap made a completely unqualified, outrageous statement too, that TDAG "owns everything that Modest Mouse has ever done".

modest mouse's- lonesome crowded west and the moon and antartica are 2 downright untouchable albums. there is only one universe in the entire world where brand new would be winning, and that universe is the one populated with the people in the general music forums on ap.

I pick Modest Mouse because:
1. Their progression has been astounding. I found some of "Sad Sappy Sucker" and "This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About..." a chore to get through, then Lonesome Crowded West and The Moon and Antarctica came, shattering expectations. The lyrics were clever, ableit slightly backwards look at life, death, thinking about both, and the odd things that cross through the human psyche imbetween. The music was much more layered, varied, and 'moody' than before. From there they've become mainstream "indie" stays, but still remain a titanic approach to writing certain songs (Parting of the Sensory) and their off-kilter approach to everything else (March Right into The Sea.)
2. As I've mentioned before, lyrical content. I'm sure Jesse is very in earnest, but in my opinion it can't even begin to compare to the existential creepshow Brock guides us through on (most of) his songs.
3. Overall originality. While Brand New certainly made leaps and bounds from their overly stereotypical pop-punk roots, what they play still isn't anything particularly 'new' sounding to anyone who listens to more than a small handful of genres/sub-genres. The only familiarity I run into with Modest Mouse is Brock's vocal approach, which can be somewhat similar to Pixies at his louder moments.
4. Quality: This is a close one. When you listen to a release from both bands, one feels as if they're getting a very well thought out piece of work. This is where I'm just going to have to hand Modest Mouse my personal preference.

Yea it sweeps the board clean for Brand New to walk on to receive their reward.
I voted modest mouse just because I'm getting tired of hearing about brand new ... just go fuck jesse lacey or w/e the guys name is, we get it, you loooove him. That said, Modest Mouse is the better band.

I love how everyone on this website hates a band because it is popular. I know you use other words such as its "mainstream" or "pop punk" but honestly, it sounds like you're using that as an insult or something. If people like music, they're not going to stop liking it because people tell them they're too popular.

I don't remember ever saying I hated Brand New. I very much like them but I really don't consider them to be on Modest Mouse's level. Modest Mouse is one of the few bands with a different sound. Brand New is really good at what they do but its hardly original.
