You probably won't get a ton of responses to this here, but I hear ya. It's definitely some of the craziest stuff I've ever heard. Dali's Car is SO strange, I think it's pretty funny. Ant Man Bee is another cool song. If you like Zappa and haven't heard Trout Mask Replica, you're missing out. Safe As Milk is good too.

That whole album is weird, Dali's car is just some free jazz aesthetics being taken out on more standard instruments haha. Which does make it really strange. Pena is weird as shit vocally too. I'm always confused by the singer... is it always one or is there another one on the multi-track ones? I know he was a 4 and a half octave range, but tahts just insane

Trout Mask Replica is an incredible album that influenced most of my favourite bands. I've been listening to it a lot lately.

This spring I've been having trouble finding enough energetic/loose/experimental music to complement my unusually optimistic mood. Trout Mask Replica is doing that for me right now.

For all of the accolades Trout Mask Replica is showered with, which is to say the adoration of every hipster fuckhead ever, it's just another classic I don't care for and I'd gladly take Zappa over Van Vliet. Frankly, I prefer Beefheart when his work falls closer to the blues-rock idiom (i.e. Safe As Milk).
