Just Surrender – We’re In Like Sin
Record Label: Broken English Records
Release Date: August 21, 2007
I never much fancied being a historian. Their paintings of the past feature drab colors and vigorous attention to detail. I’d much rather add a little neon green here, a white lie over there, a few dabs of embellishment. And I’m willing to bet there are others out in Tubeland that do the same thing, especially when it comes to music. The first release you hear from a band, well, what a magical time. The hooks click, the lyrics have “like so much” weight with our current lives, and we use the “L” word. All of these things describe how I felt about the pop-punk of 2005’s If These Streets Could Talk. Pshh, no way We’re In Like Sin will overtake such a valiant and teenybopper throne!
Here's where I trash We’re in Like Sin. It’s time to throw the (thesaurus) book at Just Surrender. Nope. Not this time. I enjoy We’re in Like Sin for being itself, for not leaping too many steps at once. I’ve seen a fair amount of criticism for this release (and it’s artwork), but try as I may to move on, I can’t. The dual vocals and booming choruses I prized a few years ago are back and better. Though not necessarily bigger, and far from innovative, We’re In Like Sin is a worthy follow-up.
Just Surrender might not have another “Tell Me Everything” in them, but opener, “Body Language And Bad Habits,” is a gauge of where the band has been. Catchy and wonderfully angsty, Jason Maffucci and Dan Simons didn’t mess with their biggest selling point. The two trade lyrical passages and finally break bread together in each chorus. Showing a little maturity in the songwriting department, “So Close / So Alive” features a female-backed chorus and dainty bridge. The song punches the listeners’ gut, only to massage their sore belly seconds later.
“I Said It Before” begins much like a song on their previous album (“She Broke My Heart So I Broke His Jaw”), but this new track is more realized and less cheesy. Just Surrender haven’t strayed from their gritty LI influences, rather We’re In Like Sin is a necessary stylistic update. Top of their list was obviously song differentiation, as seen in the punk-pop title track and slightly electronica (complete with a descending, hair-metal guitar solo) “Something That I’m Not.” Other than “I Said It Before,” Just Surrender rarely retrace their steps. The old path is still in sight, but a few detours (uplifting “I’ll Be Here”) give We’re In Like Sin a stand-alone quality.
In the distant future, after removing my bifocals and sweater-vest, I will still be listening to We’re In Like Sin. Doubtful, but the future should be just as optimistic as the past. Whenever I get a little depressed over my (already) receding hairline, Just Surrender might be my musical dose of Zoloft. I can more than handle the side-effects: embarrassing my twins (Alicia and King), damaging my ear canals, and having a darn good time.

This review earns a fat score of 10 outta 10! I fucking loved it!
As for this record ... it's still growing on me. Not as good as If These Streets Could Talk, but I am very open-minded with music and give things time. Even if I hadn't heard it yet ... this reivew is gold, my man, GOLD -- and would have shown me the way to this disc.

This album is so generic and bland. Cannot stand it.
Blake Solomon
08/13/07, 02:17 PM
things got semi-heated in here. Let me try and explain a little further why I like this one:
The first release was solid pop-punk, but the songs tended to run on and blend together. Though, about half of the songs were worth their wait in silver. The replay valule of If These Streets is very low. I don't listen to it regularly.
This album feels a bit more grown-up and diverse. Some songs are definite misses, and this by no means received a perfect score, but I like the chances taken. The energy in the vocals is still the main draw and the guitars will occasionally "shred."
This isn't going to be an album for everyone, but I think if this was Just Surrender's first release, I would still dig it.

Blake, I love you dude, but I'm going to have to disagree, although most of this is meant for the people calling this pile of trash "great". Though, about half of the songs were worth their wait in silver. The replay valule of If These Streets is very low. I don't listen to it regularly.Well, not yet. I agree here. The debut was actually not bad. I'd replay it a little more if I could find my copy. Haha.
This album feels a bit more grown-up and diverse. Some songs are definite misses, and this by no means received a perfect score, but I like the chances taken. The energy in the vocals is still the main draw and the guitars will occasionally "shred."The energy in the vocals? John Naclerio destroyed the vocals for this band. They were never amazing, but...ugh. Very, very disappointed.
This isn't going to be an album for everyone, but I think if this was Just Surrender's first release, I would still dig it.I almost never hate an album after two listens, mainly because I haven't fully digested it yet. But I did, and I've given it a bunch more chances. This album is weak sauce. It's overproduced in the wrong places, focuses on the bands' weaknesses (poor lyrics and average vocals) instead of their strengths (guitars), and just doesn't sit well with me. I don't mind generic pop-punk as much as the next guy, but if you're going to be generic, don't be boring (there is a difference). Give me something to get hooked on. We're In Like Sin is a drink coaster if I ever saw one.

the vocals on "I Said It Before" are pretty awesome methinks. But hey, you make valid points. This could have been a much stronger album, it's hit or miss. To me, its a little less hit or miss than the first one, which only had a few songs I ended up really loving. There was just something about it these past few days that kept me spinning it pretty much non-stop. Maybe its the fact that its short and doesn't take a whole lot of "effort" to enjoy. Sometimes I just need a record like that, but even as I listen to it now, I still find plenty of songs enjoyable.
I appreciate the thought and points you made here. I wish all review responses were like this: civilized, smart, fair. Everyone should take notes from Tony. Then again, I guess it is way easy to attack the owner of this site for his opinion.

it lacks that hot fire over anxious energetic feeling similar to the same problems NFG/TBS/STD have encountered at times.. some records just need to capture the magic better .. no brainiac review is needed.. here, its just some risks a band took as far as their emphasis and message theyre trying to convey and its too early to tell if it will take or not
This thread is hilarious.
:rotfl: I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw that...
Seriously though - I personally love this band, and I'm stoked for the album. Tate has every right to hate it if he wants. You draw fire as soon as you post an opinion, Tate...its hilarious.
But I still think I'm gonna like this album...I just love the band. It's a personal thing...that's music.

I should just not respond to people asking my opinion on albums I dislike. I was being supportive and reading Blakey's review - saw that post - and figured I'd chime in.
My own fault.

hahah, I appreciate the support! This is the most comments Ive ever had in a review, true most of them didn't deal with me, but I'm not going to wallow in the details.
Peace be with you all

I have nothing against anyone showing their opinion, it's the great thing about this country...the review was well written, although i don't necessarily agree, to each is own....i was only chapped at the way i felt tate attacked the record on a young band just playing music and doing what they wanna do, just saying i think the record is nothing special or i don't dig it would have been fine, but calling it generic trash was weak.

totally not into the new cd... its only half as passionate vocally as their first cd, and the songs are just boring, very disappointing

Lots of people care about spelling mistakes - because they're fucking words - spell them right if you're going to use them. Doesn't matter if it's the internet or not.
And how am I a hypocrite this time?

i've seen this band live and honestly, they are incredibly generic, incredibly predictable, and incredibly out-of-date. hate to say it, but if you like them, by all means, don't get in a music conversation with me.

You're fucking nuts if you don't think We're In Like Sin is a great album. I've watched those dudes progress since they were A Second Chance, and they have definitely come a long way. So everyone do yourself a favor and don't rely on the dumb reviews on this site to decide if you're going to check out an album or not. Chances are if you were a fan of If These Streets Could Talk, you will be a fan of this. Just don't go in with the attitude that you're not going to like it and/or it's going to suck.

Hi, I wrote a positive review of this album. What did you think a post like this was going to accomplish?
How did you manage to use two different forms of "you're," for the same phrase, in the same sentence - only one word apart?
LOL!I actually enjoy a couple of songs on this album.

I remember going to Warped Tour a few years back, I barely knew any of the bands. So I just randomly picked one, and it happened to be Just Surrender. One of the greatest ideas of my life. Love this CD.
