Matchbook Romance**** -heh
I don't really anticipate anything. I get releases early so I just get them when they leak.
I really anticipated thrice and thursday, and the ataris of course. All of them lived up to what I thought they would be. You can add yellowcard to that list, and brand new also. Pretty much any disc this year! Yea, it was a good year for music.

HOW COULD YOU FORGET ABOUT COHEED?!
shit, this year sucked for music, RKL was supposed to release a new cd, but no record lable would put it out, so musically, 2003 was one disapointment after another.
but i am looking forward to the viva le punk festival at CBGB's and the UK subs/toxic narcotic show, and the Exploited/Total Chaos show. Agnostic Front came around, so did the Circle Jerks, Alice Donut, DOA, Subhumans, I saw my neighbor's band (Damon Morder) a few times, and a few more bands that i don't feel like naming, so there were good concerts, just not good cds.

How can you say this year sucked for music? Just because a lot of the bands finally got a new sound and grew up? I thought this year was fantastic for music.
And yea, forgetting about coheed was bad. It was probablly late at night when I wrote that.

yeah...well its hard to explain..but if i had to put them in a category it'd be ska/punk. remember catch 22 (their first cd, keasby nights)? well remember that lead singer, with the scratchy voice? well, he left the band after the first cd and he created two more bands in the last few years: Streetlight Manifesto (who recently signed to Victory Records) and Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution (unsigned).
they just released a cd about a month ago and it's amazingly good. It's like the best of Keasby Nights Catch 22 with every song. They lyrics are definitely one of the most impressive things on the cd. You can get one of the songs off of http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/611/streetlightmanifesto.html this is a great song, although it doesnt show exactly how all their stuff sounds...thats the best part, they are very diverse.
id suggest giving it a listen, its a different sound definitely, but i know a lot of people it grows on.

Weezer, they're supposed to be working on a new album. I've followed their whole career, have every cd they've put out, and I can't wait for their new cd. It did take them a long time after Pinkerton to put out the Green album. Rivers seems more focused on making music now. Maladroit was way better than the Green album, but all of Weezer's albums are great.

I know Tate hates Weezer, but they're truly one of my fave bands of all time. I haven't really listened to them lately, but they deserve so much credit.
The Blue Album is definitely one of the best albums of all time. That CD has been with me since Iwas in like 3rd or 4th grade and I still listen to it 'til this day. By the way, they're re-releasing The Blue Album and including all the lyrics, more pictures, and even a few rare songs. That should be awesome.
And they are working on a new record with Rick Rubin which should be awesome. Rubin is such a great producer.
Rivers is such a great writer and "Pinkerton" shows that more than anything...that album as well is one of the greatest. For me The Green Album was VERY disappointing...after awhile it just got old. Maladroit was a solid heavy record, though, and I loved the hooks, verses, and chords on that album.
I heard the new album should be leaning more back to the "Pinkerton" vibe / era which should make for and mean a GREAT record. I can't wait !!!
Nothing can touch The Blue Album and / or Pinkerton, though !!!
Also, very anxious for the new Coheed and Cambria. The Second Stage Turbine Blade was such an amazing album so I'm sure these talented musicians won't disappoint again either. Thursday, Thrice, Brand New, etc. all lived up to the hype as well !!!

Weezer is one of my all time faves. I adore Rivers! I do agree the Blue and Pinkerton are the best.

Why bother making a new sound when you can't get the old one right?
As far as "growing up" is concerned;
06.25.03 - Dead Kennedys Earn Total Vindication In California Court of Appeals
Court Upholds Earlier Decisions of San Francisco Superior Court
Band Maintains Control of All Artistic Materials Including Back Catalog, Logo and Use of Band Name associated with Dead Kennedys
Los Angeles, Calif., & San Francisco, Calif. – Seminal punk rock band Dead Kennedys announced today that they have earned total vindication for a second time in a lawsuit filed against them by Alternative Tentacles Records.
Three judges of the California Court of Appeals ruled unanimously on June 18, 2003 that Alternative Tentacles’ appeal, No. A094272, of Superior Court case No. 998892, has been denied. Alternative Tentacles’ appeal sought to overturn more than 20 years of band history and take control of Dead Kennedys by breaking up the band partnership, known as Decay Music. The ruling means that band members East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride and D. H. Peligro will continue to maintain the band’s two decade old partnership with all four members, including Jello Biafra, sharing equally in ownership and control of the bands’ creative works.
The ruling also upholds an earlier court decision at a jury trial by the San Francisco Superior Court in May 2000. Alternative Tentacles was convicted of knowingly and willingly committing fraudulent acts against Dead Kennedys by withholding monies administered by the independent record label. The jury awarded the band compensatory and punitive damages totaling more than $200,000. Alternative Tentacles did not dispute that they acted deceptively in their appeal.
The justices also unanimously overturned a $5,000 fraud charge against guitarist East Bay Ray.
"We’ve been dragged through courts for over five years and it's really exciting that the justice system worked the way it's supposed to in this case,” said Dead Kennedys guitarist East Bay Ray. "This ruling by the appellate court clearly says that Dead Kennedys and Decay Music are a full partnership. From the beginning of this ordeal in October 1998, neither Klaus, D.H. nor myself wanted to go to court to settle something that should have been handled reasonably between us. We are relieved that a jury of twelve and all of the judges recognized the truth.”
“Unfortunately, legal miscalculations and media manipulations caused several costly and very public lawsuits, just to settle something we knew the outcome of all along,” said Dead Kennedys bassist Klaus Flouride. “The one thing that most people misunderstood about our struggle for control of the very recordings we helped create was simply that we wanted Alternative Tentacles to recognize our vote in how we wanted our music released. No one seemed to understand that by Dead Kennedys and Decay Music controlling our own catalog, Jello still gets 100% of his record royalties and his music publishing, which is exactly what he is entitled to. We just wanted an equal say in all matters that pertained to the band.”
“The Dead Kennedys were always about honesty, fairness and standing up for the little guy against all odds,” said drummer D.H. Peligro. “This ruling proves that Dead Kennedys still stand for the very same thing.”
The denial by the Appellate Court of Alternative Tentacles’ appeal means that Dead Kennedys members East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride, D.H. Peligro, along with Jello Biafra, will continue to maintain full control of all artistic materials pertaining to the Dead Kennedys via the Decay Music partnership, of which Biafra is still a full voting member.
Since taking control of the Dead Kennedys catalog following the trial court’s judgment in January 2001, the band has remastered and reissued their entire back catalog on both CD and vinyl. The band has also released their first live record, MUTINY ON THE BAY, a compilation of tracks recorded from 1982-1986 on Manifesto Records as well as the Target Video, DEAD KENNEDYS - EARLY YEARS LIVE DVD via Music Video Distributors. A new DVD, DEAD KENNEDYS, IN GOD WE TRUST, INC. - THE LOST TAPES is set for release on July 22, 2003 from MVD. A new live recording from 1979 will be released on CD from Manifesto Records in late 2003/early 2004. Since reissuing the band’s catalog in 2001 with superior, remastered sound and original artwork, Dead Kennedys’ catalog continues to sell more CDs than they did on the band’s previous label.
