View Full Version : what a terrible year in sports...

this has been eating at me for awhile...but last year was amazing. world cup, baseball world series, olympics, and the usual things like march madness, hockey was back, football and the saints, world series, D-Wade and the Finals. There was just so much to remember about it that made it so great.
This year?
Vick. Benoit. Ref Fraud. Bonds. Every month it's something horrible and new. Even the good big stories like Beckham seem to be completely covered in controversy and negative arguments. There just isn't much to celebrate this year, at least not in comparision to the overwhelming amount of bad vibes running through the sports world.
It's just been wearing on me...here's to a good Fall because 3/4 down and a year to forget.
(Except for Rick Ankiel...that was an amazing story)

i think the baseball end to the season/playoffs will be awesome...theres not one real dominant team like there usually has been in the past. its very close this year

i didnt think last year was anything that special and it also had plenty of controversy with steroids, bonds, floyd landis. And the world series wasnt all that good. I also dont think that this year has been that bad aside from the last 2 months

it just didn't seem as overwhelming with bad news...there was more going on i guess to keep focus on other things.
i guess in a way we can blame the decline of Sportscenter on it since they're the ones who decide which stories are going to be hot topics.

This year (calendar year) had Boise State, back to back NCAA tourney winners, (and the football and basketball champs from the same school), a great wild card race in both the AL and NL, Peyton Manning winning the big game, LeBron taking the Cavs to the finals (and his legendary performance in the Eastern Conf. Finals) - It's been a great year in sports I think.

last year had some dim spots, like you were saying with landis which was a terrible story and that was the worst world series ever, especially considering that the only memorable performance was rogers in game 2 and that came under fire because of the pine-....dirt on his palm. there was also corey lidle, or i believe that happend in november.
but this year also had tony larussa and josh hancock before this and a crappy superbowl.
both this year and last year have been iffy.

It's unfortunate because people will overlook those with the NBA scandals and Mike Vick.

eh, all those things are nice, but completely overshadowed to me. put it this way, if you pulled up the front cover of espn.com every day at the end of the year, how many of those days is there good news? i'm with you that all those things are great, they just seem to get lost with the other stuff dominating the news.
and to me, Peyton Manning and Florida added to this year being bad...with his stupid giant forehead and their stupid joakim jerk...

Why did people think this year's superbowl was so bad? Peyton winning it was great, and the game itself had some really exciting moments.

I hate Florida, but it was a historic event in sports and for many was pretty awesome.
And you'll find bad news all the time. This year has certainly had more than usual, especially in the NFL with Tank Johnson, Pacman, Vick - but that's also a case of Goodell being really harsh with these guys (Tank and Pacman), which is a good thing.

Yep...the only way to judge a year in sports is to do it 4-5 years later...at least...that way all the emotion is aside and the memory of December isn't stronger than January/February of that same year.
I mean, right now sports are fucking terrible...we have a cheater holding one of the most hallowed records, an animal abuser as the poster boy for our biggest league, refs ruining another league, and even after terrible accusations with the Tour De France last year, the doping got WORSE somehow this year...but that all is just recent memory, and if you look back at the 6-7 months prior, there is an amazing amount of positive stuff, it just doesn't come directly to mind.
So, like I said...judge this year in sports...well, at least wait until this year is over, we still have a full NFL and college football season ahead, the World series and playoffs, and new NCAA basketball, NBA, and NHL season's to start. There is a LOT ahead in this year
the point is that the vick and donaghy stories are so horrendous that it overshadows all the good that has come out of this year.

Any year the NBA comes out looking bad is a good year in my opinion
In all seriousness it has been a terrible year for sports, but really only because the Leafs missed the playoffs. The rest I dont care about.

I'll tell you, I really don't know where the NFL would be this year without him. It was the perfect time for a guy to come in and clean house.

It hasn't been the greatest but it's not a horrible year. The baseball division/wild card races are going to be amazing coming down the stretch. I think all of the good was overshadowed by Donaghy and Vick. That sucks.
i think the baseball end to the season/playoffs will be awesome...theres not one real dominant team like there usually has been in the past. its very close this year
The Red Sox and Angels who have the best records in baseball currently could very well both miss the playoffs. That's how close it is this year.

People have been losing interest in the NBA for a long time, and MLB just isn't the same as it used to be either. The "magic" really is fading away.
I'm hoping the football season, both college and pro, are something to enjoy. Lots of interesting off season developments so it should be interesting to see what teams end up performing.

well the playoff race is exciting, but the whole steroids thing didn't help. it's a shame when the all time home run record is set and it doesn't really matter, because the guy is a cheater.
but you are right, personally i'm hoping the Braves can find a way in and then not fuck up in the first round like they usually do.

The last few months have just been shrouded in controversy...but even last year's World Cup wasn't great. Zidane?
And if you pulled up ESPN.com news page every day, you wouldn't have seen a main feature on Benoit. Dunno how that got tossed in there.

I wouldn't call it a "feel good sports story". I'm not putting it on the same level as Vick, Benoit, Donaghy, Pacman, Tank, etc...but it wasn't an athlete rising above on the playing field to help out his team.

That one was just really big because it was in the World Cup and it happened to such a high profiled player like Zidane against a high profile team like the Italians. You don't often see headbutts in international soccer, but cheap shots definitely.
