The Anthem Sound - 4 Songs
Label: Hello My Name Is Records
Release Date: August 14th, 2007
Who?
The Anthem Sound is a quintet from Brooklyn, New York with a very jammy hard to pinpoint influence and sound.
How Is It?
4 Songs has a great sound to it that's very refreshing in a sense that it keeps you captivated, but would be much better in a full length form. The opening track, "Your Lullaby" starts off with some background noise of a person talking saying "You were doing it yourself, no because you wanted to be doing it yourself, but because no one else is going to do it because no one cares. Things are different now." Which could signify many modern day things and lifestyles. and really sets the tone for the whole EP. While Evan Grove's voice isn't very captivating on its own, the music makes up for it and really enhances his voice, it's very fitting. The beginning of the next track, "Lunar" makes me think of some car commercials i've seen in the past few years with people dancing around and enjoying themselves on their way to a nightclub. It's influenced heavily from bands like Interpol, Sebodah, and Radiohead (who isn't influenced by them). In "The Promise". After a much more chill song in "The Promise", you reach the best song on this EP, "Poised To Conquer". Which is a song I feel could've been written by some of the best in between their best record of all time and the record that came after that. All in all, 4 Songs is a short, spontaneous, and really intriguing music that should make you wonder where this band will be in a year.
Radiohead, Sebadoh, Interpol, Ben Gibbard, Straylight Run
