Is going to rule. A History Of Violence was the most snubbed movie a couple years ago. Fortunately, I don't think that's going to happen this time. Fingers crossed for Viggo Mortensen getting the nomination he deserved here.

I barely know anyone who has even seen this. If you're referring to the generally positive reviews, that has a simple explanation: it's a good film.

I was referencing the fact it was nominated for Oscars, the positive reviews raving how fantastic it was all around, and TJ's comment saying it was "snubbed."

What didn't you like about it?
The acting was subpar. The story/plot/script was average, at best. The pacing was awkward, especially from the point of the climax to the end. I would have to watch it again to recall the rest, but that's what I remember off the top of my head and thought as soon as it finished. Not one thing about it made me think it deserved the praise and critical acclaim it received.

cronenberg is terrible.
You can't possibly think this is going to be better than No Country For Old Men or There Will Be Blood.

No way. I had pre-conceived notions that it was going to suck, but one day I just turned on HBO and watched whatever was on (I didn't even know that I was watching it until after when I checked the program guide on IMDb) and I thought it was pretty solid. Nothing amazing but it was certainly a good movie. Besides, if Cahiers du Cinema says it's good, it's good.

I am a fan of Cronenberg but dislike Viggo.
I am more excited for No Country for Old Men, Javier is one of my favorite actors.
I agree, it looks fantastic. AHOV is not overrated in the slightest bit.

If you haven't seen it everyone should check out "eXistenZ". It's a great science fiction film by Cronenberg.

I'm not saying it wasn't good, but it certainly wasn't great/superb/fantastic/amazing or worthy of a Best Picture nomination.

And all it got nominated for was Best Supporting Actor and Adapted Screenplay. Wouldn't exactly say the Academy were big fans.

Rented it a year ago and thought it was just ok. I don't see what's so special about it.
Eastern Promises looks like a move I'd like.

I liked AHOV a lot..but again, I'm easy to please. which can suck at times because I can watch nearly any movie and dig it, but sometimes my friends aren't at all stoked to see anything I want to see.

I actually thought so too. I'm not too picky with movies, but that just wasn't good.
Anyway, this movie looks interesting.

Can't be worse than A History Of Violence. Cronenberg needs to go back to making horror/sci-fi/fantasy films.

Has anyone actually seen Eastern Promises yet? it was absolutely wonderful. Viggo was outstanding. his performance was cutting edge and completely balls out....LITERALLY. in all seriousness though, it was a fascinating story, with some real intense scenes. that knife fight in the bathhouse was unreal. see this immediately.
--also great to see armin meuller-stahl. he was the show stealer here, much in the fashion of william hurt in AHOV
As far as AHOV goes, i thought it was superb. William Hurt was worth the price of admission alone. anytime -8 minutes of screentime gets you an oscar nod, you've done something pretty special.

same here, but can't argue that history of violence wasn't good, so i'll take my cronenberg anyway i can get him.

i really want to see this
Just watched this and liked it.
One of my favorite movies of the year. Picked it up the other day, can't wait to watch it again. I haven't seen There Will Be Blood or Atonement yet, but as of now I'm saying Viggo better win Best Actor Golden Globe. If there was anyone who could muster up a performance more authentic and powerful as Viggo's Nikolai, it'd be Daniel Day-Lewis, though.

I thought the ended was kind of abrupt and forced. I think the movie could of easily been another 30-45 minutes long to further show how he moved up to take over and show the demise of Semyon to finally be caught.

I picked this up last night at blockbuster and was moments from renting it when I decided not to, because I've heard absolutely nothing about it.

Bought it the day it came out. Had not heard much about it, decided to watch it because it's about a russian mob in london, who doesnt love that? One of the best movies i have ever seen. good twists, but not overly done. fucking amazing, in my opinion...

My thoughts exactly. I liked it though, I need to watch it again.
I liked the ambiguity of the ending. I guess I'm just okay with it when once in a while a movie decides to not spell everything out for the audience.

Saw this last night and really like it. Loved the graphic scenes (minus the peen/ass shots). I also thought it could have used another 30-45 min, but I also thought maybe it left room for a sequel of some kind, which I personally wouldn't mind.
A history of violence was amazing, but to be honest I didn't find Eastern Promises to be that good..
I had a very abrupt ending, and I feel like they could have explored the whole russian mafia thing way more..

I just got done watching this movie, and I liked it better than A History of Violence. I had never seen a naked man fight two guys at once, but I now I have. And like everyone else said, it did end extremely fast and I would have liked to see a little bit of revenge take place at the end, but it was still good.
I watched and like History of Violence, I just don't se what's so great. The acting was good, I love Viggo Mortenson and the knife fight was an incredible scene, but with the ending and rather forced vaugeness I just can't really get into it.
