They shouldn't have rerecorded all their songs. It was just unnecessary.

I use to dig these guys in my formative years...

Only thing I can listen to without cringing is the self titled and Elva and neither are great. Typical melodic so-cal punk rock.

Anyway, Scott Russo has to be one of the world's worst lyrics not to mention a scumbag. Jenn can tell you a good story about going to see them and Scott talking about wanting to do lines of coke with not only his parents in attendence but his daughter and son.

I'm not sure which is a favorite of mine, but overall? Way better than that last record! I dig roughly 50% of the record and absolutely loathe the otehr half, haha. Here's a brief review/write-up. The songs I like are perfect for driving fast on a summer night. Especially the one with Del the Funky Homosapien. That shit rules.

1.) Starships and Apocalypse - Catchy song with a groovin' bass line. Super catchy but uh, the lyrics ruin this one for me.
2.) Nevermind - Sweet guitar riff, fun synth lines. The "woah-uh-oh" in the background sounds like something from a travel commercial for some tropical island. That being said? This song is pretty great.
3.) Dark Dayz - This song sounds like a clusterfuck during the verses and the choruses are kind of "meh."
4.) Last Chance - More grooves. I dig the dark vibes on this one.
5.) Sing - Balladry! Always an Unwritten Law strongsuit. Great song.
6.) Superbad - Rad guitar riff, but uh, this shit is buttrocky.
7.) Let You Go - Vaguely rap-rock. Boring as hell during the verses, but the chorus reminds me of something they would have written for Elva.
8.) Chicken (Ready to Go) - Fuckin' A. This song rules. Fast, catchy, and Del adds quite a bit to it. This song is cheesy, but having a guest rapper makes it feel more sincere.
9.) On My Own - Another song that reminds me of Elva. Solid power-pop track.
10.) Love Love Love - Fuck this cheeseball song. That being said? Could be a Top 40 hit.
11.) Swan Song - Good song. Speedy, catchy.

I think what bums me out the most about these guys isn't the "change in style," because I was with them during Elva and most of the songs I like on the last albums show a growth beyond their skate-punk days. It's more the overall attitude. They're very...Bro-y. Maybe that seems a bit judgemental or whatever, but that's the general vibe they put off. It's like, "FUCK YEAH MANG! ARENA ROCK BOO'YAH!" Or something. Haha. I don't know how to articulate it...

Scott Russo is kind of an asshole. It's pretty well-documented at this point. I remember meeting him at a show years back (2002) and he couldn't have been a sweeter guy to the fans, but I also remember reading an interview with another former band member who said something like: "Unwritten Law has pretty much become the Scott Russo Wants to be a Rock Star" show. It aligns with a lot of the behavior/band members leaving stuff, the direction the band took sonically...And his most recent appearance on the Jason Ellis Show where he showed up in the AM trashed.

I don't have anything when bands party or whatever; just y'know, so long as it's not self-destructive. Then it starts to bum me the fuck out.

Also: Here's Scott's side of the story from the Examiner. (http://www.examiner.com/concert-in-new-york/interview-scott-russo-of-unwritten-law-explains-departure-of-longtime-members) He brings up some good points but still sounds like a dick. An honest dick, granted, but a dick.

haha, the "scott russo wants to be a rock star" show seems like a fitting way to describe it. big bummer that steve and pat are gone. i'm still somewhat interested in where the band goes next, mainly out of morbid curiosity now. haha.

this image of him is all i could think of while reading that:

http://www.punknews.org/images/bands/features/unwrittenlaw-1300895112.jpg

and some good points are made in the org comments (http://www.punknews.org/article/43867):

Hey remember when the old drummer from this band pawned all their equipment to buy drugs?

And when they had to cancel those shows because somebody tried to blow up the guitarist's house?

And when everyone spent more time talking about the singer's coke habits than they did his lyrics?

Basically what I'm saying is; Unwritten Law are a train wreck.

I want to see a Scott Russo and Tom Gabel vs Ben Weasel and the dude from Trapped Under Ice. We'll call it DoucheBrawl 2011. And a blonde, female police officer referee.

heh

08/16/11, 10:49 AM
Scott would win. Based solely on the "bro-down" factor. Tommy would have zero reason to fight him and thus wouldn't be bothered, and Ben is only tough when he's on-stage.

In other news: Haven't heard the remastering, but I'm hoping it's good. I kinda dig that record! Not as much as Oz Factor but yeah...
