For weeks now, many have speculated wether or not Brand New would really be playing a free show at a college in Boston, when they have a headlining show the next day in California. The group hosting the event "Pi Kappa Alpha", swore that the band was indeed playing a full set, but also chose to silence any doubters by just saying "Trust us". So needless to say, many people we're left doubting wether or not the band would actually play. There was even a debate here a few days ago in a thread.
At 5:50, Brand New took the small stage.
There setlist was:
Yeah
Millstone
Archers
Tommy Gun
Sic Transit Gloria
Jaws Theme Swimming
The Shower Scene
Jesus
Luca
Degausser
You Won't Know.
Overall, the show was amazing. The entire band possesed a ridiculous amount of energy thru out. There wasn't very much crowd interaction, just a few lines about how Jesse hoped the redsox didn't lose there lead, and how it would be a shame if the Yankees won the pennant. All of the songs were filled with even more energy then when I last saw them play with Manchester Orchestra this spring, even with the fact the setlist was short and many favorable songs (Limo, guernica, me vs. maradona, soco) were left off the setlist. Jesse added a little solo in Tommy Gun that was pretty intense, before the "this is the break in the bend this is the closest of calls" part. You Won't Know ended with Brian walking off stage after tossing his sticks in the air, proceeded by Garrett, then Vin with only Derek and Jesse on stage playing. Jesse continued to scream "You Won't Know" as loud as he possibly could for a solid minute, and then slammed the microphone on the floor and left. Overall , the show was much more than expected for a free show and I was honestly impressed considering they haven't played together in a while.
The only negative was the horirble sound quality (the stage was wedged in between a ridiculous amount of buildings) and the amount of bros. Oh god, were there TOO MANY bros.

And by the way, Brendan Brown from TREOS was chilling in the back. Seemed like he was with his girlfriend, so I just said hi quickly, but he was definitely a very cool guy.
I didn't realize there were all these APers at NU. Crazy, man.

Still no "Not the Sun"? Ah man, I'm hoping they're able to perfect it by next month when the tour starts as previously mentioned by Jesse.

It was a great show, the set was pretty short but you can't ask for much more at a free event.

well i mean they were paid $35,000 to come (or so i've heard from some pretty reliable sources on campus), so it's not really entirely a free event.

I attended the show with my girlfriend and have to admit that the band was pretty incredible live. I had only seem them once before (supporting Dashboard on the "Mark, Mission, Brand, Scar" tour) and thought they were 10x better. The songs off TDAGARIM were absolutely outstanding.
I however thought the lack of interaction took away much of the entire set. Jesse seemed bored (he yawned when he walked on stage, forced a mumbled 'hello' and even his Red Sox chatter felt insincere and distant. He also said he was "shocked so many of you came out, but i'm glad, it feels good" but it didnt exactly sound that genuine. He even sounded pissed off when he said, "So usually we play Degausser right afer Luca, but I think this is the last time we're going to do it."
By the end of the set though he seemed far more into it, he was pretty manic during Degausser and You Wont Know. I just wish they would have walked back onstage for an encore. Pretty frustrating they could ignore 1,5000 fans screaming "One More Song."

I was there. I mentioned it in the offical BN thread. It's too bad they didn't play Handcuffs (it was on the set list), I would've liked to hear it. It was supposed to be right after Jesus but they skipped it and went to Luca. I was there pretty early and I got to see sound check. Was anyone else there too during sound check? Jesse played a song solo and I liked it but can't figure out what it was.

Oh and my favorite part of the set was when Jesse just went crazy during the end of Degausser. He even knocked over the mic from jumping around but got it back just in time for the last, "Take me take me back to your bed...". It was great. I think there are 2 vids on youtube of Degausser at NE.

jesus is never very vocal or friendly on stage and the chatter always seems forced, i mean he sat on a couch for like 3 years had some surgery, the least he could do is act like he's excited to be back
