Holy crap! The City EP is fantastic. I should just end this review there so as not to stain At Cliffs End with overused metaphors and abstractly descriptive adjectives. What the heck, I like to hear myself talk…

It might sound weird that The City makes me nostalgic. After all, this is my first exposure to the teenage wonders more commonly known as At Cliffs End. But with each hook comes another high school memory of friends’ bands and their dreams of stardom. Those bands were good, and there were a few I legitimately thought would make it big. I would hopefully be able to hitch a ride onto their speed train to fame by washing their Bentley’s or becoming a nanny for their illegitimate children. They were nothing compared to At Cliffs End, though. If you know these guys, don’t go far, success is on its way (or, depending on how you gauge such things, its already arrived).

Most decent pop rock bands with a girl-plagued singer and slightly technical riffs can promise mainstream appeal. I can’t blame them; America will shove just about anything down its ear canal (it’s our right as Americans). At Cliffs End have more than just a foundation at this point (The City is their second EP), and, really, I would be flabbergasted if these guys can’t make a living off their tunes.

Hows about an example: “The City” is a song bands much more “popular” than At Cliffs End would love to write. The acoustic guitar and subtle snare fills constantly rise into a massively enjoyable chorus. Each portion of the track is fluid and the song never falls into the repetitive song structures of most pop music. Micah Boyd’s voice is mature and flexible. His lyrics might be, ahem, typical, but they are sincere. If you’re looking for a group not reliant on syntheziers and gimmicky props, At Cliffs End are here. Enjoy them. Support them. Go into the convenience store and buy them beer. Don’t collect a convenience fee for once, jackass.
