All Time Low – So Wrong, It’s Right
Release Date: September 25, 2007
Record Label: Hopeless

If loving this album is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

Sure, it’s pop punk. Sure, it’s been done before—many times. Nevertheless, I love this album just the way it is. So Wrong, It’s Right, All Time Low’s sophomore full length and widely anticipated follow up to their Put Up Or Shut Up EP, is somewhat of a throwback to the glory days of pop punk, an album full of youthful, summer-y, hook-laden songs that just begs to be listened to in a car, volume at 11, windows down and all.

Having sold over 60,000 copies of Put Up Or Shut Up at the time of this review, a nearly unprecedented number for an EP, many eyes are looking towards So Wrong, It’s Right with eager anticipation; fans of the EP can expect to hear the same band, but this time around, All Time Low stepped up the “fun” factor a little bit—they haven’t reinvented their sound by any means, they’ve just turned slightly more optimistic with this record. Songs such as “Holly (Would You Turn Me On?) (my personal favorite) and “The Beach” bring to mind, well, beaches, summer, California, and the like. Gang vocals are omnipresent.

“This Is How We Do,” the leadoff track, kicks the record off with a bang and sets the tone for the rest of the album with its high octane double-time drums, explosive guitars, gang vocal shouts, and slightly cocky, yet playful, lyrics; there is a certain swagger about the group that is undeniable. At the same time, the band is able to explore other vibes and moods throughout the album, such as on the first single from the record, “Six Feet Under the Stars,” a tribute to being young and in love, as well as “Stay Awake (Dreams Only Last For A Night),” a massive sing-along anthem.

The album occasionally suffers from questionable lyrics (“Come One, Come All”) and I feel that the strength of Alex Gaskarth’s vocals are sometimes masked by a little studio trickery, but ultimately, my complaints are far and few between. While I initially found the record to be a little top-heavy, I have found that the record as a whole gets better with each and every listen.

This record will receive criticism for being generic, dated, and perhaps one-dimensional. There is no question that it will be looked down upon as unchallenging and adolescent. While there may be some truth in such criticisms, it is evident that this is the album All Time Low wanted to make, and it is refreshing to see a band embrace their roots, to see a band stick to their guns. It was the group’s goal to make a stellar pop punk record, and in that, they have succeeded.

There is little doubt in my mind that All Time Low is the poised to be the next big thing and one would do well to hop on the bandwagon while there’s still room. I get the hype.

Seems to me this is, in keeping with Rohan's prediction as to fan response, a monotonous, generic and out-dated album. I thought PUOSU was great, but I can't get into the album.

It's the old Matt Squire/Hit The Lights great EP/lackluster follow-up syndrome. I can't say I expected any better though.

I would have given it lower in terms of staying power, but it is still a solid pop punk album. I am damn curious to see where their FW sales will be.

ive heard all of this album and i love it. i know it sounds odd, but i kind of miss the dramatic element of their old stuff. I guess i like my music somewhat personal and not totally care-free. Regardless, the new stuff is pop-punk perfection.

Not their best, I like the acoustics of stay awake and six feet better than most of the album
I wish the vocals were more... Alex I guess?
And the lyrics are kind of different on some of the songs.
I was expecting better, I guess you could say
Some of the songs just seem random? But I guess the fact that they were trying to tell stories helps it make more sense
If that even made sense?

But regardless, it's still a great album.
It gets better every time I listen to it

great review, rohan. i agree with pretty much everything you wrote. i love the lyrics, actually. hes not trying to do too much with them and they all work for the songs. i definitly wish this album came out in may as i see it being an amazing summer album, however i appriciate it for what it is nontheless. an extremely solid pop-punk album.

the jury's still out for me. I love parts of this album, others are growing on me.
overall, i think it's a solid album, and it will probably push this band to great, great heights.

and while this album does remind me of old TSL and NFG, i wonder how this band will mature in comparison to those bands.

I totally agree with the studio trickery part with Alex's vocals. It's pretty evident in Cute and BLG's albums so I wasn't sure if Squire would be the right man for the job. But he pulled it off overall. I too was expecting more lyrically after hearing songs like Jasey Rae and The Party Scene, but it's a decent album regardless.

I still haven't heard their first EP, but from you've told me I don't want to.

It's hard to really throw Put Up Or Shut Up into the mix though considering it's mostly songs off of The Party Scene, plus two new songs.

I liked this review. Fair, and grasped the album's intentions with acuity.

Personally, I love the album a lot. I think it's just reminiscent of spending my last summer before college with all my friends and all that fun, bubbly shit. I've listened to every song 100+ times, which is pretty pathetic, I must say... but whatever.

09/27/07, 12:53 PM
Yeah this album gets better with every listen. Personally when I first heard It I thought it was pretty boring and lacking punch that the EP had , but it grew on me big time. I enjoy it quite a bit and overall it's just good pop punk. It'll be interesting to see if it has staying power though

I think it's fair to say that "the party scene" was critical in the development of their local fan base, which you could argue was pivotal in their getting signed to hopeless. The previous release was ok, but did not really generate the kind of buzz in their state that "the party scene" did. I think that TPS was a pretty awesome record for a bunch of rising high school seniors. It sold especially well on Smartpunk also, so I think you may be underestimating its significance to the success of their band.

Very fair review. You were better than the douche bag that did the dangerous summer review. respect.

I have yet to purchase this album, unfortunately. But ATL's one of the few pop punk bands I like these days.

And I really liked this review. And normally I hate most reviews. I definitely agree about Alex's voice and the studio trickery, blah. This part of it is my favorite though:

This record will receive criticism for being generic, dated, and perhaps one-dimensional. There is no question that it will be looked down upon as unchallenging and adolescent. While there may be some truth in such criticisms, it is evident that this is the album All Time Low wanted to make, and it is refreshing to see a band embrace their roots, to see a band stick to their guns. It was the group’s goal to make a stellar pop punk record, and in that, they have succeeded.

I have to agree that its a good pop-punk album.
Its All Time Low at its mediocre. I've seen the band progress, being from the same area they are, and this isn't their best work. Their voices are sweet but most of the lyrics fall flat with the exception of Remembering Sunday and Six Feet Under The Stars.
To sum it up: its a decent album but there's too much added pop flavor for it to be an honest, enthralling CD. Hopefully this won't become a trend of theirs and I'll just have to settle for this CD as they decide whether or not they want their next album to have any substance whatsoever.

there's much better pop-punk out there (four year strong, the wonder years, valencia ect), but as much as I hate to admit it, i kind of like this record. If it had a little more variation and didn't sound so dated, I might even consider myself a fan...

Juliet Simms adds a lot to Remembering Sunday. She's really versatile and frankly without this appearance and her few lines on "Lose It" by Cartel on their new self-titled, Automatic Loveletter would have even less listeners.

Sure the album is pop punk, no doubt about that, but looking past the genre debates I agree that All Time Low has really made a solid album.

Good review.

I love all TIme Low and found this Cd pretty good, though deffinalty not their best. I did find the vocals to be really edited sounding and that really bothers me, casue for most of the album it doesnt even sound Like Alex, where as on the party scene the vocals were left the way they were orginally recorded

And Yes this is a pop punk album, and i usally don't really like pop punk most of the time, but i really love all time low in general

and really good review

I've been a fan of All Time Low since they played local shows with 20 people at them when they first started. I can not see what the fuck some of you people are talking about. Sure, the lyrics are a little corny in like 3 songs, but where do you come off saying the album isn't good and is mediocre and shit. Stay awake, shameless, and remembering sunday are probably 3 of the best pop-punk songs i've ever heard by anyone. I listen to this cd everyday like. What the fuck more do you people want out of a pop-punk cd. Please, tell me what album is better than this one or Boys Like Girls. Fuckin all time low is awesome. And for the record, Alex's voice sounds almost exactly the same live as in the cd so some of you people are fuckin wacked out.

this band use to be the shit. now it is shit. i don't understand how anyone can listen to that album without wanting to cry because it is horrible. i bought it and now i want my 10 bucks back so i can buy lunch. their eps were so much better.

I Do Like this album. I do think that the ratings are fair but that they still are a growing band and you have to give them a chance. Matt Squire did an amazing job with this album and I love it.

while i don't think that this full length is as catchy as the ep was, it is still a very good. actually, when i first heard it, i didn't really like it. i was expecting something like 'put up or shut up' and it's not. but, i really came to like atl, so i wanted to give the cd a chance. i listened to it through and through until i felt that i could accurately critique the album. after doing so, the album got much better. the only thing that i disgree with rohan on is the strength of alex's vocals. i've seen a million youtube acoustic versions (and acapella) and actually like alex's voice better when it's more raw and organic. he absolutely kills the game when he sings. i

definitely a summer kind of album you can rock out on your way to the beach.

O.o what do you mean masked by studio trickery?
"The album occasionally suffers from questionable lyrics (“Come One, Come All”) and I feel that the strength of Alex Gaskarth’s vocals are sometimes masked by a little studio trickery,"
Without a doubt 'come one, come all' is very questionable, buht hey ihts fun and upbeat, like the rest of the CD. they say they dont take themselves very seriously, so you shan't either. x]
yeah, i love their old stuff, but their taking a new twist on things, & this coming years album will be even better :]

Its good pop punk, not terribly inventive but good driving on the weekend music. The guitar work definitly took a step backwards with this album, with the exeception of the few 'solos' they do. Put up or shut up is my favorite pop punk work to date.

I've JUST started warming up to ATL. I heard Coffee Shop Soundtrack over two years ago and it didn't really catch my attention. I haven't heard all the trakcs, but I really like "Remembering Sunday." This review makes me want to get the album so badly though. I'm sure it rivals Mayday Parade's A Lesson In Romantics, as I have heard, and I love that album.

personally, i think that they're a rip off of fall out boy... they do the same shit every other pop-punkj band has ever done, put they add some electric elements to it. Wow. Personally, I don't find any of these songs catchy accept for dear maria... they're just annoying and all about the same thing. Many of these songs are interchangeable. While I like Pop-punk I like pop-punk when it's done right. Like F.O.B. Late Night Wars... Taking Back sunday (old), the movielife, adn alkaline trio...
